Rate this rig. Good Enough? Alternate Suggestions?

This is probably overkill. Friend is using it for stock trading/general use. He may need to do some very heavy computations with this machine. May do some very casual gaming, but It's certainly not a focus. I don't think he should go with anything less than a 1070 Ti. Do you have any alternate component suggestions? Personally, I'm not sure about the RAM. Also, he wants monitors with THIN bezels. That's very important to him. I'm not sure if he should go with 4x 4k monitors or 2x Ultrawide 4k - Maybe even 1080p. He won't be gaming often enough to take advantage of high refresh/G-Sync/HDR etc, so no need to bloat the monitor pricing. If you have any alternate hardware suggestions, I'd like to hear what you'd use instead and why. He has money to burn and wouldn't mind trying to somewhat future proof a bit.

Looks good to me. Only thing I would be hesitant on is a 27" 4k screen the text size on some applications may be too small.
 
yeah windows scaling sucks for 4k sometimes.. I'd probably go 1440p really.. and when you ssay heavy computations what kind of computations? is it CPU or GPU bound? if CPU maybe Ryzen or even Threadripper would be better?
 
For the monitors, he may wish to have a secondary display in the vertical (tall) orientation so that he can have a longer list of stocks visible at any given time.

Alternatively, some ultrawide monitors allow 2-3 windows open side by side which could work too.

As for 4k I can understand the desire for lots of things on screen, however there are larger 4k monitors that may be desirable as well.

8700k is a safe choice. Ryzen would work as well, but his workloads may benefit from clockspeed more than core count.

Not sure what his computations are, but he may also have a need for the benefit of ECC error correcting memory. Something to consider. It is unofficially supported on Ryzen and more oftentimes limited to more expensive Intel Xeons.
 
27" he should go with 1440p. Dell has some good options. Everything else looks fine.
If he is doing a lot of computational work he may want to look at Ryzen depending on what software he is using.
 
Have you seen recent 4K TVs? Proportionally they have ridiculously thin bezels, they're dirt cheap, and if your friend wants screen real estate in a big office, you can't get more than that.

If your friend's computations aren't threaded, I'd invest in faster RAM. Follow the speed divided by CAS latency formula: the higher that number, the better. Maybe an Optane drive if storage heavy.

If it is threaded, you should definitely look at a Threadripper build.

Maybe a PCIe wifi card if you can't run Ethernet to the rig. My old Archer T9E still gives me faster network transfers than anything I've put into a USB port, and I think you can even get 4x4 antennas in newer ones.
