Walmart to Challenge Netflix, Amazon with New Streaming Service

Walmart is working with veteran television executive Mark Greenberg to establish a streaming service that would “challenge the dominance of Netflix and Amazon by targeting Middle American tastes in programming.” Most of its original content would cater to the retail giant’s core shoppers, away from the coasts.

If Walmart creates the service, it will enter a crowded field of contenders that includes Hulu, AT&T and the aforementioned Netflix and Amazon. Those familiar with the plans say Walmart, famous for its price-cutting, would offer a lower-priced monthly subscription than its competitors and target audiences outside of large cities.
 
Netflix already has Sandler, Foxworthy and Larry.... having said that, I hope walmart pulls them away so I don't have to skip past all that crap on Netflix anymore.

What is scary is guys like Sandler just had their Value go up. Its hard to believe that the worst of the worst could well the the highest paid streaming acts if Wally World and Netflix start bidding wars over that crap.

I predict Joe Dirt 3 being the most expensive streaming movie ever made. lmao

You aren't kidding. Whenever I want to use their website to see which transformers or lego sets are in stock I want to scream. It is the least intuitive website I use regularly.

Didn't Walmart having a streaming movie service - might have been called Vudu? Good luck.
I usually don't shop at Walmart. Something usually pisses me off or grosses me out (thank you 300 lb beauty riding around on your electric cart with either your butt crack or a fat roll hanging out, if I could purge some memories, this would be one..)
However, I did buy a 55" 4K tv recently for $220 on clearance. It's a brand called Hisense - never heard of them before. However, wanted one I could put in the basement where my kids hang out. It is a lot better than I thought it would be.
 
With the flood/avalanches of streaming services out now and coming I can see it now. First OTA broadcasts, then internet streaming and VR/AR devices. Next implant streaming services which of course require a new codec for the only best compression ratios and of course only the best bandwidth that Ajitastorizon can provide!

how the hell have you not heard of hisense? lol.. they make all of bestbuys in house tv's and control the Sharp brand license. good bargain brand but that's about it.

It seems like you're being sarcastic but what you're saying sounds great.

Crackle could be had for a bargain if they want a nice jumpstart. It already has great original content like joe dirt 2.

walmart clearance is a glorious thing. I paid $200 last year for a 55" samsung 4k but it took an hour for the people to "find" the item. Once a manager got pulled in they were found within minutes and there were 3 of them. Turns out the person "looking" for them was holding them to buy when their shift ended.

Pressure doesn’t always mean the price will reduce. Sometimes it also means different services or level of services, different or better content etc.

Price is usually just a bonus.
 
Walmart already has Vudu. All they need to do is add a subscription service to that which allows you to watch movies they can get the rights to allow as part of a subscription and done.
 
I'm a fan of VUDU also, only been using it a couple of months now though. That seems like the smart choice, revamp VUDU.

Walmart bought Vudu, didn't start it but yes they own it. It is a video purchasing / rental site. Actually was one of the first if not the first one out there that actually took off. It was the one that any digital movie code card told you to go to once movies started coming out with ultraviolet copies. It is better than most of the other services out there due to the tie in with ultra violet and now the new movies anywhere (everywhere? one of those) services that allows you to tie an account to any movie service and watch movies. I can watch any digital movie I own on my Vudu account, about 75% of them show up on my youtube red account. However many other services don't tie back so purchasing a digital copy on them only work on that single platform.

All of my HD digital movies were converted up to 4K when the UHD copies come out so that was a plus there.

So it is a very good service platform for movies. However what it does not give you is a subscription like Netflix or anything like that, it is strictly a rental / purchasing platform just like Steam for games vs something like EA access that gives you unlimited access to games.

Which was indeed my point. Besides, city folk loved Hee Haw as much as anyone. The show wouldn't have been in national syndication for all its many years if they didn't. My parents and grandparents were city folk who watched Hee Haw all the time. I found it stupid and boring, but I wasn't its target demo.

Wal-Mart is going to fuck up with this service if they try to aim its content at "Middle America" because they'll almost certainly end up aiming at stereotypes instead of people.
