Apple's New iPhone X May Require Authenticated Chargers for Fast Charging

Limiting charge to 2.5w is kind of a dick move, but USB-C standards compliance is such a shit-show that I can't exactly say it's the worst idea I've heard.

I mean, I feel leery enough about plugging into no-name 10w USB chargers; how much am I going to trust in a 100w Guangzhou special? Meanwhile, I'm staring at a Nintendo Switch that I still only have the one USB-C charger for, because there's so much FUD over what chargers will cook it's non-standards-compliant USB-PD implementation.

All you have to do is follow the Google Pixel subreddit to see how crappy the USB C PD charging situation is. It can be tricky to chose a standards compliant cable and charger and if you pick a cheap Chinese option (which is largely what people are looking at if they aren't going OEM), they can start melting cables, chargers USB ports etc...

I still don't feel comfortable buying a non-oem cable and charger for my phone's personally... Too big of a risk for a $1400 phone...

I bet the price of these apple chargers drops when they make a phone specific version .the apple chargers everyone is talking a out are over specced for phone charging and were made for MacBooks from my understanding, so cheaper options are coming I bet...

I wish I could get on the hate what Apple is doing bandwagon here but if they move to USB C as is rumoured, I think it is a very smart idea when you look at all the cheap, incompatible USB C chargers people are probably going to try using on their iPhone...

If they certify 3rd parties, then fine.

Because, who remembers the USB-C Amazon accessory shit-fest from a few years ago that was so bad a Google engineer spent time reviewing USB-C products to warn people of the cheap Chinese crap that would kill you Chromebook or phone?

What convenience may I ask? Everything is different, different cables, dongles, poor compatibility, proprietary software, etc. I went to Samsung Galaxy back in 2014 and haven't looked back. Now on S9+ with all standard cables, OTG, wireless charging (which was standard since S6) it is very convenient and works better than iPhone. I still have to use iPhone at work but it's more of a burden.

All those negatives are positives to people who want something they don't have to think about. You buy into the ecosystem, you use Apple apps and software, Apple back up, Apple branded cables and chargers etc not because you want it to work with your random cars aftermarket HU or laptop etc.

You are not in that group, so like myself, you could care less, or those might even be negatives to you, but to many people, they will pay for it. I see it all the time, people buying Apple items that are way more than other options, but they will work with their phone/mac without question, so they don't care. Now, Apple is not perfect with that, I have had a number of issues with "just works", however I tend to push things and I use my devices for work etc. BUT, they do a pretty good job of it compared to other options that have been on the market.

So while I wont be buying anything Apple for myself...When my mom asked for a tablet, I got her an iPad.

Sorry, but this is such a non-issue. SImply DONT buy the "100w Guangzhou special". Stick with reputable brands only, which still leaves a TON of options available without resorting to no-name Chinese brands.

The problem is all those cheap chinese brands end up in checkout line displays or gas stations. The general population does not realize one is different than the other. They just think "im not paying that much for a samsung or apple charger!"

Though apple could be trying to solve a problem, they also are trying to profit from it.

They are not trying to solve anything.
No offense but Apple packages this stuff really well, but it's there to totally fuck your wallet over.
People who buy cheap ass cables and they melt, well this shit ain't gonna stop that happening.

People say, oh USB C cable fiasco blah blah. Micro USB cheap cables are around forever and are terrible as well and melt etc etc.

Reducing the charge rate so low is a total dick move by Apple so don't defend them. That's below even a slow charge.
They are taking advantage of the fact that people want multiple chargers and charging a massive premium for the pleasure of owning an Apple product. Fuck them.

I did not say it was a completely benevolent decision. Personally I don't think any phone should be charged past 1C considering the device already generates its own heat and completely encases the battery.

I only end up charging my phone at night so really don't care as long as it is done by mornig.

For my drones and other rc stuff I charge them at 0.5 - 0.75C. Cool batteries are happy batteries :D

i'll personally never buy anything apple for reasons such as this, but it doesn't really concern me. as mentioned, this kind of crap is rampant in many industries. automotive is a good one.

but here's the truth of the matter and why i don't care: someone will find a way around it and quickly. if you really care, you'll figure it out. it's almost like a skill testing question. if you're intelligent enough to figure out how to do this, you're probably OK to pick your own charger.

there's some great examples of this. my car is a '15 mazda 3 with the fancy ass computer screen in it. it doesn't come with apple/android car systems. well mine does....also ran some modifications to enhance the system. my phone is a 4 1/2 year old HTC M8. it's currently running android 8.1. updates for this phone were halted with marshmallow (6.0). some of us older guys will remember the AMD thunderbird pencil trick....great little one that was! as far as cars, yeah they try to lock people like me out. try is about all they can manage. i'll find a way special tool or not. i've even had to rig up my own tools from time to time by modifying an existing tool or combining tools. this is, by the way, why i will never buy a VW. way too much headache for the DIYer. the above mazda has been very easy to work on surprisingly.

the point here, gentlemen and gentlewomen, is that if you really want to find a way you will find a way. the rest probably don't care and are happy buying apple trash.

Uh... car makers do this shit all the time with "special tools" that only dealerships can get etc. Using special screws, sockets, filters, etc etc etc. They have done a multitude of things over the years to get you to the dealership for service and put the independent auto shop out. Try owning a BMW, they have a log that only they can update and anyone buying used wants it FULLY serviced.

If the maker of your favorite android phone could do this they would to.

They have a product and brand that they can do this with. Samsung, Google, etc does not... if they did they would screw you over to. Stop thinking it is just apple.

There's a big difference between needing special tools to service a machine (and when this goes to far see also Midwestern farmers buying black market software and boards from Eastern Europe to hack their recent issue John Deere tractors) versus special restricted equipment to use a machine. IBM lost that fight in a 1936 Supreme Court decision. Apple is doing something similar by setting the stage to make it commercially nonviable to use third party equipment by unfairly limiting the charging capability of non-apple adapters.

I still own an apple IPOD. It was nice when they first came out. That was when I made the mistake of buying movies and music off iTunes. I still load up iTunes from time to time to watch old movies that aren't available at other locations. Apple's value just hasn't held up for me so I don't buy from them anymore.

This isn't really new, Apple currently has a MFI certification for lightning cables and yes 3rd party's can get the certification (an Amazon Basics cable is about $6). Putting it on the charger is a logical step.

is the pricing a dick move? sure. but of course the default optoin here is, just charge slowly. the phone makes it thru the day on normal use yes? charge overnight yes? I do that with my nexus. I haven't ever had the extreme NEED to have it quick charged. QC is nice, to be sure, but necessary? ehhh. and high usage folks have those strap on battery packs (although i don't know if those exist for the newest iphones). and if the battery is at end of life... well it's either 2+ years anyway, in which case you probably WANT a new phone, or it's battery replacement time... which is the price of the charger haha... but I still don't see the NEED....

USB-PD or Quckcharge 3-4

i have pixel 1 XL and pixel 2 non XL so all my chargers as well as my car is USB-PD (well one half of it is anyway as can't find an dual port USB-PD car chargers just duel USB QC1-3/iphone 2A on a normal USB port and USB-PD type C port, i only need one phone to charge fast any way)

Yet again, the uneducated Apple hate strolls into another thread without actual facts or evidence.

Any bets would be highly dependent upon how much more money he swindles out of the federal government. Left to his own devices he can't burn through cash like that and stay afloat.

Ok then. $500 says SpaceX and Tesla are both profitable in ten years. Wanna take it?

Here's a fact. Apple released a product marketed towards content creation professionals that is unable to stay even at base clocks for short periods, let alone extended periods. So much for validation.

How about a gentlemanly $20. I'd feel bad taking $500 from a stranger.

You'll be lucky to buy a loaf of bread and a pound of burger with that, but sounds good to me !Lol

The bet: By 1H2028 earnings statements, Tesla Motors and SpaceX will both be profitable. I take side with the claim, for $20.

I agree with their stance.

Too many shady chargers out there, amazon is full of them.

I would be super uber fucking pissed off if a shady chinese import pos charger blew up £1000.

For once, I approve of apples stance. I do use an anker charger without worrying, but normally I just use my ipad one since it charges my iphone crazy fast.

Sure, I'll take that bet. Remind me in 10 years to come collecting ;)

This is no longer true though, this may have been the case back in the day when Apple was indeed more user friendly. I have iPad and Android Asus Transformer tablets and internet browsing is better on Android will less browser hijacking. Ipad is not a bad tablet and really cost wise, about the same a good Android tablet but still with a lot less features and no standard charging cable or wireless charging. Same on Galaxy phones, it's better in every way and operating is just as smooth (my wife and mother in law use it, if they can do it and not complain to me about problems, that says a lot lol). Apple ecosystem is really for folks that are stuck up inside a box. I've used both platforms and for basic user they work the same, but Android offers way more for advanced users too. This sounds to me almost like folks who heard that Vista sucked back in the day so to this day they refuse to use Windows saying how it blue screens all the time, all the viruses, problems, etc. It just works is really a joke, even Apple people know but they create a false perception for themselves and despite any issues they may be having, they refuse to acknowledge them. At my work we're about 50/50 split between Apple and Windows so I see this all the time, people dealing with Apple issues, they get new one, they still have issues but they outright refuse to try anything else even though it may help their problems and work. I wouldn't really say that all Apple products are stupid but the way their market base is, it's almost like the old saying that stupidity pays. Some people still think that owning an Apple product is a status symbol despite so many people having one (it perhaps was like 10 years ago), shallow thinking.

Actually we are talking about Apple Iphones and quick charging. Which has nothing to do with door handles. ;p
True, but really nice dodge after a good argument, the emoticon really takes the seriousness of his reply away.

Great! Then you'll make it even more dangerous for people because they'll do things like this instead of spending the money on a new charger.
