Apple's New iPhone X May Require Authenticated Chargers for Fast Charging

According to news out of Japan, Apple may start requiring that only chargers with a C-AUTH or 'USB Type-C Authentication' can fast charge the new iPhone X models. Stopping dangerous third party chargers and cables from damaging your phone is a great idea. But the question is will Apple allow third party charger manufacturers to get Apple certification? Apple currently charges $68 - $84 for a cord and charger combo which is much more expensive than a third party normally charges for a similar product.

Macotakara states that Apple modified the current C-AUTH standard which could restrict fast chargers of 18 watts or more down to 5 watts to performance. Apple will use C-AUTH to drop all third-party chargers to just 2.5W, turning them all into slow chargers and the question needs to be asked whether Apple will even offer licenses to any third party fast chargers? After all, almost two years on Apple has yet to grant any third parties access to the proprietary Bluetooth W1 chip used to fast connect its AirPods and Beats wireless earphones and headphones.

I regularly make this comment on an Apple thread

I'm shocked I tell you...SHOCKED
......well not that shocked

On one hand you COULD say Apple is trying to protect its charge circuits and battery etc etc blah blah
On the other MORE likely hand it could be Apple going "hey, I found a new way to screw MORE money out of Apple customers" High fives all around and collective dick sucking

2.5W? Get the fuck outta here apple. I haven't used a 0.5A USB charger in 10 years.

SO glad I don't own any apple products.. My Pixel XL has been serving me quite well for a while now.

Apple has always been of the "You don't have to think about anything" kind of product, lots of people get it because they don't want to think about anything and just want it to work. While in my experience that is not always the case with Apple, they do a good job at it. Holding control of stuff like this keeps other issues from coming up from cheap/crappy chargers. However for convenience, there is always a price, often well marked up. $68 for a phone charger however is....Well, even beyond convenience pricing, unless it gives me a hand job while it's charging the phone. I mean almost $70 is way more than some 80W fast charging hubs go for, I can see maybe $40 for one with Apple tax included....But $68-84?

These very practices are why i have always hated apple. It wasn't necessarily their hardware (which typically is behind the curve a bit). Its the fact they overcharge for crap and lock you into this toxic system for which you have to pay insanely high dollar amounts for accessories because you switch 1 generation tech.....that didn't require a change but only to add their own bottle line. We are talking like 6 different type of chargers over 6 gen of devices.

Apple has proven in the past repeatedly they would absolutely kill third party everything if they could. There is almost zero chance anyone gets this certification if apple gets away with it.

Now compare this to if some car company like Ford or Volkswagen had a policy that the driver had to use the corporation's owned/sponsored gas stations or the car would only refuel at 1/6th the speed due to "safety" concerns from third-party gasoline vendors.

Tesla?

the only "good" things I found with Apple phones is they typically go quite loud vs many others A and B even when lower Mah battery capacity they seem to last quite a bit longer than others using similar spec battery, well, at least ntil it gets to X "age" then they slow the battery down because they are fucking tools.

but $68+ for a charger is insane, higher price then many for the phones AND special wire less bud which cost more then they should and now a 1 off Apple specific charger, morons.

I guess that is what people get, reward the greed, they will keep being greedy, reminds me of a certain GPU maker.

If you watch Rich Rebuilds on Youtube, he points out that the door handles have a high faliure rate and they are not plug and play. The door handles have to be flashed to the car. It is in every way. DRM.

yeah, Apple never works with 3rd parties at anything
/s

mFi anyone?

And the restriction is for fast charging - which is pretty dangerous if done wrong. The amount of counterfeit crap out there is astonishing. Anyone buying dodgy high to low voltage crap deserves the fire or shock they will likely get.

It's not like Apple could include safeguards in the charging circuit to prevent excessive charging levels. I am certain there is a magical reason why they do not do so. I have heard the electricity Apple uses is a special variety not available to anyone else in the world and that must be why they have to control it all. It would be too dangerous to allow third parties access to that technology. It could upset the balance of nature and cause world wide panic.

Yes, yes. Apple knows best. They must. That is one of many reasons they charge higher prices. You cannot get what they provide for low prices.

That must be it. I am sure it is. They probably giggle at our ignorance. After all, if it was easy, then anyone could do it. Apple knows best.

Part of me wants to say "Good for you Apple, knock off chargers burn shit up."

That part of me is stupid and a sucker. That part of me would buy Apple shit for everything. He's not allowed anywhere near the wheel for just that reason.

I can just imagine how much an authenticating charger will cost, $100? More? Fuck that.

Uh... car makers do this shit all the time with "special tools" that only dealerships can get etc. Using special screws, sockets, filters, etc etc etc. They have done a multitude of things over the years to get you to the dealership for service and put the independent auto shop out. Try owning a BMW, they have a log that only they can update and anyone buying used wants it FULLY serviced.

If the maker of your favorite android phone could do this they would to.

They have a product and brand that they can do this with. Samsung, Google, etc does not... if they did they would screw you over to. Stop thinking it is just apple.

Thats not DRM.

Except it is. The identification circuitry is there only to prevent aftermarket handles from being produced and it also forces handle replacement into a dealer repair. This is why the handles are repaired vs replaced on " unsupported " cars, due to Tesla deciding if you have the " right " to own their car or not.

This is not unique to Telsa. They all do this. Or do you think that lawsuit Ford levied in 2014 against a 3rd part diagnostic software doesn't count because its not Telsa?

But why are people buying one of the more expensive phones and then go and buy a cheap charger off alibaba? I think it is because apple still has a ton of MFI chips they don't know what to do with.

Quote "the question needs to be asked whether Apple will even offer licenses to any third party fast chargers?"

Why would they ? The main reason they are doing this is to sell more of their own expensive chargers !!

Apples and Oranges. Were talking about door handles.. I can go buy a door handle for a Ford Fusion from the local auto parts store and install it myself, go to the local garage and have it installed or if I really wanted to, could go to the Ford dealer and have it installed.. You don't have to flash the handle.. A lot of mini vans and SUV's have electric latches and I'm pretty sure they don't need flashed to the car

The unsupported part comes ( and why door handles can be a sticky situation ) because in the event your rebuilding a salvage tesla, which is popular. Tesla does not recognize the vehicles and they refuse to work on them. Since only the dealer can flash the handles to the car, an unsupported car might not be fixable if it had something as simple as unrepairable door handles.. This is something that no other company will do, or has done. Yes specific diagnostic software is IP across all the brands.

Well, just another reason to dump Apple. I wonder how far they are going to keep pushing and testing loyalty of their customers.

when i read the headline... my first thought was that apple was going to require chargers to be an IOT type device tied into your itunes account. And then they would charge you certain rates for varying recharge rates

wait.. maybe i shouldnt give them any ideas...

Pretty far, people who go for convenience etc are not really looking at "value", add into that the brand reasoning people get Apple and you pretty much have your own money printing press, I can't fault Apple for that, it's great....Just not for me.

This will be great for my mom who insists on getting all her charging cables at 7-11 and then bitching about how shitty they are.

Fucking thank god.

Actually we are talking about Apple Iphones and quick charging. Which has nothing to do with door handles. ;p

What convenience may I ask? Everything is different, different cables, dongles, poor compatibility, proprietary software, etc. I went to Samsung Galaxy back in 2014 and haven't looked back. Now on S9+ with all standard cables, OTG, wireless charging (which was standard since S6) it is very convenient and works better than iPhone. I still have to use iPhone at work but it's more of a burden.

LOL, courage! Seriously, the Sheeple will somehow find a way to spin this as positive I am sure. We have had fast charging for YEARS and there has not been this epidemic of fires caused by faulty chargers.
