Battle for Azeroth is coming in a month. pre patch next week. I was disturbed to see this posted:

"Don’t Forget: Update Your Drivers!
To make the most of Battle for Azeroth and avoid potential issues, it’s important to update to the latest DirectX 12 drivers. Please note that AMD and Intel GPUs will default to DX12, while NVIDIA drivers will remain at DX11 with the option to update at a later time."

Im sporting a 1080 gtx ti. thought I would have had more than enough for any WoW offering. Kinda sad here.

Has anyone seen or heard any rumors about nvidia working to solve this? should I leave my system at default DX11 until nvidia explicitly states they have solved this?

thanks

If you have the option to select DX11 or DX12, try both and see how it works for you. From what i'm reading, you can even still use DX9 if you want but it requires manual editing of config files and some stuff in-game might look broken.

And let's not get emo here. There is a big difference between DX12 not working right away in a pre-patch and your card not being "enough" for WoW. I'm sure you'll have a great gaming experience even if you are "stuck" using DX11. Right now, I still use 2x 4870x2 in quad crossfire in my 2nd computer. The only game that gets played on that computer is WoW and it still works great, with full quad crossfire support even, and most of the time at 100+ fps in DX11 (feature level 10_1). There are still enough WoW players that i'm sure Nvidia will be on top of this. For now i'm sticking with DX11 on my 3x 680's because WoW has great triple SLI support in DX11!

I doubt WoW is going to perform or look better in DX12 than DX11. Don't get me wrong; I've been playing WoW since July of 2005 so I'm not a hater, but honestly the engine isn't exactly a shining example of performance nor 'graphical beauty'. I'd rather see them recode it in Vulkan and go back to their cross-platform roots and leave this DirectX bullshit behind.

You must be young and not remember the time before DirectX...it wasn't good.

true! "let's not get emo here" GREAT POINT thank you. lol

i dont care if it's dx11 or dx12, my only point is that I get to continue to enjoy my investments of the ti and the PG348Q =)

You should not worry about it. you miss maybe a few things but it depends since DX12 is a lot of things it might be that some of the code paths within the engine are optimized for Nvidia since Nvidia been sponsoring WoW more or less. If those paths take more work for whatever reason it should not matter they would fix it but the whole thing can be pretty trivial to begin with.

I doubt it is a full overhaul of the entire engine, if you recall Nvidia had some custom effects that were not available for others it might be something a like.

It was actually no one was addicted to WoW :)

I was playing games before Windows existed. But thank you for calling a 51 year old young. I still appreciate getting carded for buying alcohol. (y)

Yes, creating custom DOS boot profiles for specific games was a bit of a pain in the ass. For the first few years of playing WoW, I actually played it in OpenGL mode because I felt the colors looked better and the game was smoother. I've also played it on a Mac where DirectX wasn't available. I was definitely there throughout the original Microsoft DX 'extravaganza' PR blitzes to promote it as the best thing since sliced bread. I've also been through DX hell where certain games won't play correctly because Microsoft uses various Windows versions to stratify the DirectX landscape to enforce marketing goals of selling X number of specific Windows licenses. The bread is buttered on both side, sometimes. It's not all bad but it's not always good, either.

Just a note about this: the D3D 12 renderer doesn't support full screen exclusive mode anymore, and Blizzard did this intentionally and is telling customers that it isn't possible to do D3D 12 full screen exclusive mode even though it is.

This effectively breaks G-Sync, because G-Sync doesn't work as well in windowed mode as it does in full screen exclusive mode.

Way to go, Blizzard. You made an old ass game worse. So glad I'm done with WOW. It would have sucked having to put up with that.

Some more food for thought: more time has passed between WOW's original 2004 release date and today (2018) than time between Super Metroid's release date (1994) and WOW's original release date. I think maybe it's time to stop and play a different game.

I purposely choose DX11 over DX12 whenever I can for stability so this thread is strange to me. Especially for a nVidia card.

WoW has historically been CPU bound, so in theory DX12 could get you a significantly better framerates and less stutter in dense areas.

An Android WoW port might catalyze a switch to Vulkan, actually. You laugh, but after what happened to Fortnite, I bet Blizzard is seriously looking into it.

Remember how awesome wow looked going from opengl to dx9?

Remember how amazing the textures were when we switched from dx9 to dx10?

Remember how expansive the world was and how much performance we got when we updated from dx10 to dx11?

No? Oh yeah, nobody did. They all looked identical and performed about the same. The only time we have seen any changes in the engine is when Blizzard made changes to the engine and introduced newer rendering technology. I’ll bet you could post 10 identical wow videos with 2 of them being dx12, and nobody could pick out those 2.

I was talking in general of gaming and DirectX was needed due to the difference in memory management between DOS and Windows 95.

Games under DOS took advantage of the fact that there was no memory protection and so they did what they wanted with memory-space...sometimes with the attitude of "Damn everything and everyone else, I need that memory!".
It gave direct access to hardware but you try and multitask under those circumstances…*yikes*
Windows 95 introduced protected memory and thus you needed an API like DirectX to give direct hardware access.
I actually think it was called "Windows games SDK" at first and it also offers a great backwards compatibility for DirectX games over a large range of hardware.

Are you really sure you remember the time time before DirectX...and the pains you sometimes had to go through(Rebooting, boot-disks, finding the right drivers)?
Compared to double-clicking an icon in your OS?

Today it is easy...think back ;)

The only DX12 games that don't support exclusive fullscreen are those from the Windows Store. And that is due to the new framework, not the graphics API. So, yes, Blizzard is full of shit. Like Borderless Fullscreen, or we now going to need a third-party app just to get exclusive fullscreen? What a world we live in...

How many expansions did Super Metroid get? Was the graphical engine upgraded over time? Did more content get released in that time span?

Gsync works just fine in full screen windowed mode for me. In fact, there is an option in the Nvidia Settings that is specifically for enabling Gsync in windowed mode.

Maybe its time to stop worrying about what other people play. (y)

I remember this time well. When Plug & Play was more like Plug & Pray. EMS/XMS boot disks. IRQ jumpers. Not enough conventional memory... CD-ROM drives that cost damn near as much as a mid-range HEDT i7. VESA Local Bus. Discrete FPUs. SCSI!!! Yes...

With all the money Blizzard has no real vision for the future the WoW game engine is so lacklustre. By now I would expect Blizzard to dump DirectX all of it and go Vulkan do everything from scratch and have a game engine a like what DICE did for EA.

But you guessed it, nothing ...
