Ironwolf / Western Digital - Help me make a decision.

1.) Do Western Digital 10 TB Red drives ever go on sale? Are there ever any coupons? I sometimes hear about Plex lifetime members being offered 20% discounts on WD drives. But whenever I browse for sales, they're never listed any lower than $420.00 CAD per drive; don't think I've ever seen them dip below that in the 5 months I've been checking.

2.) Right now Seagate Ironwolf 10 TB are on sale for $376.99 per drive. And I'm looking to buy 4 drives for my NAS. So I'd save $172 if I go with Seagate.
For some people $172 is a lot of money, for others It's not a big deal. Personally, I'd prefer to save $172 if I can. I'm really only using these drives for my NAS media collection. I was kinda leaning toward buying Western Digital Red drives, but....... now I'm not so sure anymore.

What's bizarre to me are the number of 1 egg reviews on newegg.ca for the WD 10 TB drives. 21% which is substantially more than the 2/3/4 egg reviews. But Amazon.ca tells a different story - overwhelmingly 5 star reviews. *shrugs*

What would you guys recommend?
 
I'd look at Backblaze and any other places you can get information about the drives. Seagate has a shitty reputation for reliability, but perhaps that has changed with their newest drives. I'm really not much of a fan of WD either, but they are (or at least were) better than Seagate. Don't forget about HGST and Toshiba either. I know this may not have helped much, but HDD reliability is often a crap shoot. In the end balance your research with your wallet and grab your drives.

In the 8TB+ category, it doesn't seem like Seagate does as poorly as they have in the past and is comparable to other drives. I've had 2x10TB Ironwolf and 1x12TB Ironwolf all working fine for the past year (10TB) and few months (12TB).

Their new drives may be the best drives on the market now, I have no idea. I really hope they have turned the corner, competition is good.
 
Given the savings I'd take the seagates myself. Both have 3 year warranties. Does bestbuy have the WD easystore external drives in Canada? Might find a deal and shuck the drives.

I tried to check for the WD 10 TB Red and Seagate IronWolf 10 TB weeks ago on Backblaze and didn't see them listed. And the HGST drives everyone is always referring to are noisy. Too noisy for my setup.

That's good to know. How are the noise levels compared to Western Digital - if you have any 10 TB Reds? I've compared the spread sheet acoustic levels, but some people tell me It's kinda irrelevant.

What was the problem Seagate had in the past and how long ago? And by "best drives" are you saying the best drives they make or the best drives when compared to non-Seagate?

I looked into Easystores months ago, but I can't buy them in Canada. And if I was to go the shuck route, I'd want to buy local in case I have a problem. I looked at importing, but with the cost of doing that, it wasn't worth it anymore.

Something is amiss here, either you mean the 12TB drive or you typo'd $276.99 as $376.99? Newegg has the 10TB at $314 & the 12TB at $408.

It's in a case with a lot of fans, so I can't really hear the drives over the other noises case noises.
 
I have 2x8TB Ironwolf drives in close proximity to 2x4TB Red drives (one is a Red Pro) in my server. They are very quiet compared to the Red's and the smattering of other drives ( 5x1TB Greens, Blues, Reds, Samsungs, 1x2TB, 2x3TB). They are great drives and are extremely fast for spinners, and can take some abuse. The only con is they tend to run about 5-8 degrees warmer than my other drives. Just keep them cool and they should be fine.
 
I've never had any problems with any WD drive I have owned. IBM, Conner and maxstor on the other hand...........
 
Honestly even though seagates are the only drives I've ever been bitten by WRT unexpected failures, I would lean towards the ironwolf and we don't have long term data as they weren't introduced all that long ago. Simply because I have seen too many postings about Red failures (edit- and two out of fifteen have failed inside of two years at work). There are some that just keep on trucking but for the asking price of them, I would rather use the Gold or even older RE4 stock by WD.
 
As a local PC repair guy all i can say is...NEVER touch Toshiba 2.5" HDDs. I know not relevant to this topic but man 95% of failed laptops I get in have bad Toshiba 2.5" in em. How that translates to their 3.5" offerings...dunno.
 
The Toshiba 3.5'' drives of the last few years seem pretty good from my experience, with the best price/performance but several on this forum have had issues with their warranties. Namely, they take a long time and you're stuck with online store credit for a new drive or a visa gift card.
 
I just picked up 2x 12TB Ironwolves for $375 per. Some guy on eBay said his company mistakenly ordered 60 instead of 6
