District 9 Director to Helm new RoboCop Movie

Oh shit, I did watch the Robocop reboot! Totally forgot it... Why re re boot it? ENOUGH!

The remake was the biggest POS ever. Now I can't do anything but get involuntary spasms when I hear or read "robocop"
And I absolutely loved the original 1 and 2. They were brilliant, hell they still are. There aren't many movies from my childhood that I still think are great today, but these are.
If they would have kept the violence of the original, the 2014 movie would have been awesome. There was a good story about Murphy in there but the P13 stripdown was meh...

I did, it was WAY better than the original.

I loved the reboot but I also liked the original as it was comic relief,,,

"I am the law!"

It isn't a lack of violence that was the problem. The issue is that they missed all the original films subtext and all the nuances of Robocop character that made that movie mediocre.

Cautiously optimistic. Robocop hasn't been decent since Robocop 2 and there's been some really smelly turds since, but I've enjoyed all of Neil's work and if anyone could pull off a proper Robocop movie, it'd be him.

Also, I don't see why they can't use Weller. Dude's still acting, his voice work has been decent (TDKR Batman was well done, though no Michael Ironside), and Robocop's human side is basically a face plastered onto a cyborg body. CGI or timing the sequel many years after the original would solve the aging issue quickly.

Whatever they decide to do, Robocop better call at least one criminal a 'creep'.

I grew up with Robocop, but for whatever reason, it just doesnt do it for me anymore. Don't care.

I just read the article linked in the original post, it suggests that this isn't a sequel to the 2014 film, but rather a sequel to the 1987 film. When I scanned the article originally, I didn't pick up on that. I thought it was a sequel to the 2014 movie. Whether or not it ignores Robocop 2 and 3 isn't made clear in the article.

I watched Edge of Tomorrow recently and it struck me how blatantly obvious they were making their helmets out to be more fragile than a Burger King kid's hat just so they could constantly toss them aside to show the actors' faces. As if anyone watching it with the original audio track isn't going to recognize the voice of Tim Croze, who was huge after Dangerous Enterprise.

The thing with Edge of Tomorrow is that it probably wasn't a director/producer who was pushing for it, it was probably Tom. It's well known he likes to gain control of the script and modify it to his liking. ie. there were aspects of The Mummy reboot that were interesting and could have worked for leading into the planned Dark Universe but it was well documented he pushed to increase his screen presence/action scenes which really didn't mesh with what the movie should have been.

wrt the Robocop reboot I'd love for Weller to reprise his role and given the nature of the character they could in theory have a stunt actor for the more physical acting and just get Weller to do the talk-y bits. I just like the fact the original writers are in on it, doing the story they originally planned as a sequel. Along with the R rating I hope they keep the social commentary in place, although updating it to be relevant to today's hyper reality/celebrity culture.

Sharlto Copley is a magic actor.

In a good role the dude is a genius. < dont blame him for A Team.

South african white people accents are fukin leet.

Sharlto in hardcore henry, wtf, dude should of got an oscar for that role, fucking crazy magic uberleet punch in the face role.

Everyone atleast once in their lives should be made to watch hardcore henry and Koyaanisqatsi, which shartlo isnt in, nobody is in that movie but fuck it, everyone needs to watch them both.

He really needs to be in a war movie as some hard as nails little shit special forces dude < sf are small people in real life, only in america do they look like roid users.

Plus, he needs to be the next star of one of the bourne movies but this time killing his way through africa and then on into europe.

< I hart Sharlto Copley, South African special forces used to rape the world, < perfect role for him.

More people need to know about Hardcore Henry. I am amazed Hollywood is not throwing money at this Ilya Naishuller guy coz he's obviously brilliant.

I guess we are in a bad period in Hollywood... Everything has to be safe, and violence is sanitized or even funny. Studios merged themselves into flavorless risk adverse institutions... And we reward them constatly for it.
So yeah why not a re re re boot.. it will be same crap we have been seeing since the 2000s.

Chappie was awesome ... District 9 was fkcing amazing.

I like it better than any Star Wars.

I thought he was doing Halo? He would crush it if he did

I agree Chappie and D9 were both very good. However at this point I do not want to see another robocop. I just don't see any way they don't screw it up. Part of this is imo the original wasn't very good either. I mean I grew up with it, back in the day it was amazing. However that film aged extremely poorly. If you go back and watch it today and turn off the nostalgia filters for it, the movie in pretty much all respects is terrible. I don't see a way in which they pay respect to the original and make it meaningfully better. I would rather it just remain a nostalgic film of a different time..a time where the themes of robocop aren't quite so frighteningly close to the reality we live in.

Yay, more bad publicity for Detroit. I'll be taking a pass on this. Come on Hollywood types, Marvel can't be the only studio with their shit together, can they?!?!

What was Detroit like when the original was written? Wasn't there already a huge economic downturn in the city during the late 80's when the first wave of cheap & reliable Japanese (and in some cases European) imports flooded the US market?

Yes, you are correct. Detroit's troubles really started in the late 60s. The civil rights movement led to race riots, and "white flight" from the city and into the suburbs. That was followed by the fuel crisis and inexpensive auto imports in the 70s and 80s, further damaging Detroit's economy.

I'm not saying that the original RoboCop was out of hand having Detroit as the setting. It was understandable at the time. But that was 30 years ago, now. Much has changed. The Lions and Pistons have relocated back to the city, as have many businesses - GM at the Renaissance Center, Ford in Corktown, and many more. Anyone who has been in the area for a length of time will easily recognize that Detroit has turned a corner and is on the rise.

If we want to slag on a city in Michigan, how about Flint? Michael Moore highlighted the trouble with Flint at almost the same time that RoboCop came out, with Roger & Me (released in 1989 vs 1987 for RoboCop). Yet while Detroit has made huge strides, Flint continues to descend into an ever more dire state. The lead in the water situation being the most recent issue to make national headlines. Flint needs serious help, and RoboCop's writers would do well to not make the sequel set in Detroit.
