X470 Taicji question

My X370 Taichi MB went tits up, and rather than waiting for the RMA process, I decided to just get a new MB and RMA later.

While looking, I noticed that the X470 was not all that much more $$ than the X370 so I decided that I'd go with the X470 since it would be a bit of an upgrade.

I'll be using my Ryzen 7 1800x on the board.

Now, the problem/question.

In addition to the 8-pin 12v CPU connection, there is also a 4-pin connection.

The manual clearly states to plug in the 4-pin as well as the 8-pin.

Now, I looked and I don't have a 4-pin cable, nor is there any provision on my HX1000 PSU for one.

1st question: Is the 4-pin really necessary for the MB to function, or will I have to find a 8-pin to 4-pin cable before I can use the system?

I don't think it's necessary as long as you aren't pushing for some massive overclock. It should boot and function fine.

If you really want, I'm sure you could find some kind of molex to 4 pin ATX adapter somewhere.
 
I was putting my x470 Taichi together last night and was wondering the same thing. I don't plan on OC'ing this particular box but in the end I plugged them in anyway just in case. Luckily there's nothing else attached to this machine - just a video card (Titan Xp), a M2 NVME SSD and a few case fans.
 
think the extra 4 pin is for extreme overclocking but just in case i looked up a few reviews that had the boards setup and plugged into their psu's and not a single one of them used the extra 4 pin.. could also potentially be a future proofing thing for zen 2 in 2019.
 
It seems to be running just fine with just the 8-pin connected.

I'm not OCing. So needing any 'extra" power shouldn't be a concern.
 
what monkey said. highest end chips and extreme OCing will need the extra plug.
 
What is the real reason for the 4 pin?

once you get past 1.5v the power usage sky rockets on ryzen which is why it's needed for extreme overclocking. either way the average overclocker doesn't need to use it.
 
ive been looking at this board, anyone have any input on the 10gb nic onboard? i want to get this for the ryzen and the z390 version for intel..
