Crucial (Micron) a little bait and switch from RMA?

In one of my builds I have 4x8GB Crucial DDR3-1600 low profile ram sticks and one of the sticks decided to give out.

After submitting an RMA, a Crucial rep informed me that these sticks are discontinued but he can offer the standard height DDR3-1866 (BLT8G3D1869DT1TX0) as a replacement and will replace any additional memory sticks to keep it uniform. (Nice Micron. I appreciate that).

I agreed to the replacement and instead of getting the DDR3-1866 version, I got the standard height DDR3-1600 version instead.

I contacted Micron back and a different rep simplify told me the same thing how the old low profile sticks are discontinued and apologize for the inconvenience but hope I have a great day.

I'm not entirely upset but I informed this new rep that at the time of purchase of my ram sticks, I paid a bit of an extra premium for the low height feature over the standard height and agreed to exchange all the ram sticks for the DDR3-1866 that was originally offered.

The same rep informed me that at the time I purchased these sticks were $75 and the new replacements are $85 as of today. She apologized again and told me to have a great day again.

I replied back asking if it is still possible to received the DDR3-1866 as originally planned if I sent back the DDR3-1600?

She hasn't replied back after 2 business days.

Should I just let Micron off the hook this time? Or should I keep complaining until the give me what was originally promised?
 
If you have matching sticks now, don’t be a baby about it. You sound like you just wanted an upgrade if you could get one. Now you didn’t get an upgrade however you have working RAM.

Not exactly an upgrade but at least a side-grade than a downgrade in a sense of features.

Since the regular height sticks won't be compatible with my DH-14. I paid about an extra $20/stick for the low height feature back when I bought them. I wouldn't mind trading off the low-height feature for a bump in MHz (and going back to my stock cooler).

Fair enough, they don’t work for you and that sucks.

Out of curiosity, when did you make the original purchase?

Can you find the low profile DIMMs for sale somewhere? If so, buy them and sell the replacement DIMMs you received.
 
That was a deceptive move, to make a false offer then blow you off. I'd expect better from a reputable company, especially to using then-price vs today-price as an excuse. "Sorry, have a nice day."

Fair point. I didn't search hard, but it seems B&H sells an individual dimm of your ddr3. Link (edit.. Different heatspreaders, but same model?)

Way overpriced new at B&H, but I imagine you'd still come out on top dollar wise after selling the new RMA kit?

I can't recall 100% but the first two sticks I'm pretty sure I paid around $75-85 each. Intel 4th gen was released around that time I think.

Then DDR3 prices started dipping and I picked up two more around the $60 mark.

I just had a fun conversation with a rep how it is impossible for the i7-4790K to use DDR3-1866 according to the specs from Intel.

I wonder then why are they marketing DDR4-3000 and higher to the i7-8700K that can "only" use DDR4-2666.

Hopefully Crucial can just return the 3 working low-profile ram sticks to me. I wouldn't had to start hunting for a new cooler if I just kept the old sticks and RMA the 1 dead stick.

Bought some Crucial sticks, they burned up after a year or so.. RMA and got free different new sticks and they burned up shortly after. No more Crucial.
 
Must be luck of the draw - I had 3 x 2GB DDR3 Crucial sticks running for about 9 years - before m/b gave out on my i7-920

I think most brands have lifetime warranty.

Usually Crucial is pretty good to me except this one particular experience.

Honestly though, if they just cut out the BS and just admit they made a typo mistake then I would honestly just let it go.

I'm a human being too and like any other human being, I also hate working in customer service.

How long ago? Crucial has been getting good marks for reliability the last few years.

The problem is there isn’t a big market for non-server DDR3 anymore so available replacements will be scarce. That said, you are right and they screwed up.

Ballistix DDR2-2000
2007? Sure a while ago, but by getting burned twice they have solidified their bad reputation with me forever. You know how it is.
 
FYI - that DDR2-2000 was at spec voltage. Never got to 2000MHz due to my Q9450's FSB limitation.
 
As a very long-time Crucial/Micron customer that has spent thousands of dollars on their RAM and SSD products over the course of my decades-long PC building, I'd be pissed.

I have the LV/LP DDR3-1600 modules in my current 3770K system because any standard height modules will prevent installation of the Megahalems with dual 140s on it...I'd be telling them to either FIND me some working LV/LP modules, or suggest that they can provide the standard height 1600/1866 modules if they also include a pre-paid gift card to cover the cost of a decent brand/model AIO WC kit...
 
I got a PM a bit ago asking about an update.

So after my last run through with that Crucial rep who told me that it would be impossible to use DDR3-1866 for an Intel i7-4790K, another week went by and I finally called Crucial up.

The rep admitted that the first rep made a typo and and should of offer me DDR3-1600 but Crucial will honor their word and send me the DDR3-1866 model.

However Crucial won't cover shipping and I would be require to pay for it since "as we had replaced them with the correct modules". (whatever)

He went on explaining that Crucial replaces memory also base on their market value and such. I informed him that both DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866 are the same price on their own website. That excuse isn't going to cut it and there is absolutely nothing you can say other than "we fucked up".

Anyhow, that's all to it. I have the new ram sticks sitting in storage (since I decided to just do an overhaul upgrade) at my relative's place and will be listing it up for sale soon once they ship my things over here.
