Just purchased this open box Volari

United Chemi-Con KZG series capacitors strike again. I can just see the KZG model on one of the brown caps near the back of the card. I used to replace so many KZG/KZE caps that I kept a bag of them, it got so ridiculous that I finally had to toss them because the bag was getting to be several pounds.

I can definitely recap that card for you. I'd recommend replacing all of the capacitors because it looks like most of them are types known to fail.

Since I'd order a kit of capacitors for this card, would you want electrolytics or polymer caps? Poly caps are more expensive but tolerate heat better and last longer.

You also need the right equipment. At minimum, you'll want a soldering station (with a decent wattage iron like 40-60W), hot air tool and a desoldering gun; Preferably one with a electric vacuum pump because those spring loaded ones can cause damage to the PCB. The two most common types of damage are freezing air pockets inside through holes or ripping pads/traces off the board. A desk magnifier also really helps with tiny SMD components, here's my setup:

You'll also want a bottle of good flux with a syringe for application, never heat an old solder joint dry because it usually won't melt and you'll end up damaging the board and components with excessive heating. I'd also recommend never using lead-free solders as they don't melt properly, flow terribly and usually have mechanical issues due to not being as ductile as 60/40 or 63/37 leaded solder.

A setup like this will set you back several hundred dollars, but it's well worth it because you can work on even the most stubborn boards. I can do through hole and most SMD work with this setup, but not BGA since I don't keep stencils, the balls or paste around for it.
 
That's an AGP card, right? Got a mobo for it?

I'm curious to see if you can bring it back to life.

I'm so jealous. Was looking for one of those cards a while back when I was into collecting, had an open post in FS/FT for years.

Now you just need one of those quad AGP boards used for 4x V5 6000 SLI to run 2x2 Volari ultra power111!



You said you aren't going to open the sealed one, I would anyway because if any of the electrolytic caps start leaking, it's going to eventually destroy the board (usually by seeping in the vias and delaminating the board.)

I have connections. Don't really want to say my source. But I was happy to help Erek out with both of these. Love guys with a passion for collecting this stuff and helping keep the history alive.

As far as I know there hasn't been one for sale on any Ebay , forum etc.. around the world since 2011. Thats how rare one of these are and I was able to find Erek 2 of them.

Lol, thats awesome. I would never ask for a source anyway, even though I love collecting as well. Sometimes secrets are better kept ;)

These card collector threads are great. I have a decent stash of old and rare-ish cards... I have a bunch in a sealed tote and I am not even sure how many.. Lots of Geforce4 Ti and FX cards.. Some ATI and 3DFX cards.. Actually I really need to inventory my 3DFX voodoo cards.. I know I have an Intense 3D Voodoo 6MB EDO 3DFX Rush TV PCI (intergraph) and I haven't seen it for a long time... I also have a boxed (with manuals and floppies) Gravis Ultrasound Max.. I think it's time to take them all out and post some pics. :)
