Hey guy's I recently got in to the HT scene and got a pair of Klipsch towers and an Onkyo receiver I went over budget and looking for a subwoofer, I know SVS and Hsu would be top notch and recommended but they are out of my budget for now. I've narrowed down some sub-woofers I found used locally. Hopefully I can get some advice from someone familiar with these units or if you can recommend a sub in the $300.00 range. 70% Music 30% Movies

Velodyne VRT-1200 12" $120 (Used)

Velodyne SPL-1500R 15" $275.00 (Used)

Klipsch R-12SW 12" $250.00 (Used)

Bic F12 Formula 12" $230.00 (New)

Bic PL-200 II $299.99 12" (New)

Would any of these be suitable for a 20x15 room if so which one would be my best bang for buck? Thank's in advance!

For 300 bucks, I'd rather have 2 dayton 12's than 1 bic 12. Granted they are ugly to look at.

I have 2 of these. They're great if you have room for them. Dayton Audio SUB-1500 15 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JZTQIJ4?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
Typically under $200 but I've seen it on sale for $160
I'd look towards ebay for a 15-25% off sale. Dayton sells with free shipping on their ebay store. Link

The other day they had a 15% off sale and you could pick up their 12 inch sub for $125, and the 15 inch for $170. Pretty good bang for your buck right there. That'd be dual 12 inch subs for $250. Dual 15s for $340.

In a 20x15 room neither will be that great but you will have bass. I’d recommend getting two and split them up to get the response you are looking for. With a $300 price range this will be tough though. I built 2x12” subs for about $180 a piece and am powering them with an external amp I got for $150 and they fixed room issues I was having with my single 18”.

For that price actually it may be best to just get the biggest you can afford, or save up to get the one you want. Cone area matters the most with bass reproduction, plus if it’s not performing up to your expectations you can always move it closer. Nearfield how ever does have its issues unless you have room correction on your receiver.

The only problem with these is a your splitting your output in half and may starve the receiving amp, you CAN boost the sub out but that also introduces increased distortion.

For 149 dollar daytons, it'll be fine :)

Although the last reciever i bought for living room has dual outputs, and it was super cheap. I think they are becoming much more common.

Having run through the gamete of subwoofers myself - I say save your money until you can get a better sub than those listed in the original post.

You might also be able to find a local audio enthusiast who will give you a demo to provide you some perspective.

If you can glue some CNC'ed pieces of wood together you can buy one of these highly rated assemble yourself subwoofer systems.

And then buy an iNuke DSP 1000 amplifier

Paint it with Duratex or Deck Restore (think truckbed liner but with color options)

It'll be quite a bit better driver and quite a bit better performing sub than those "fart boxes" you linked.

Dayton Ultimax drivers are the darling of the AVSforum home theater crowd. Great price, great performance.

They come in 10", 12", 15", and 18" sizes if price is more important than performance.
