Elon Musk has an Idea for Saving Boys Stranded in a Thailand Cave

Posturing? He is sending a selected team of engineers from the Boring company, SpaceX and Tesla, sounds like actual action to me. Maybe they don't figure anything out, maybe his only motive is selfish, but who gives a shit if it actually helps, hes offering free technical help to a serious problem with a shrinking time table, the more ideas and brain power the better.
More smart ideas and useful brain power, not this.

I didn't know Musk's girlfriends posted here. I'm sure a couple of batteries will save the day there. Lack of electricity is the only thing keeping those boys from being rescued. Did you like his twitter post yet? Every little bit helps in these dire situations.

Sending batteries means nothing if you can’t charge them...

Hopefully they're brand new, already charged, and would be basically disposable in this situation. That said, I like your phrase. :D

I'm not even a big Elon fan. He's done some impressive things, but I'm pretty indifferent. I'd say anything that anyone in a position to help can do to help though can't be a bad thing.

To what? Depictions of gang rape? You're hopeless.

50,000 gallons per hour they are pumping out, and they aren't making headway?
http://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fg-thailand-cave-soccer-team-20180706-story.html

Perhaps Musk's idea has merit in a different way? They drill a single 'airhole' down to the specific cave the team is in, then use high pressure pumps to keep that cavern from flooding, while they drill the bigger hole intended to raise the team out? -- or just keep the room from flooding while they have time to pump the cave system dry...Then time is of less concern in regards to it flooding. I think their greatest immediate fear is that the cavern they are in would flood, and they drown where they sit right? How long does it take to drill an air shaft hole? If it's supposed to rain this weekend - that's less than 24 hours from now... Sounds bad.

edit: nevermind - looks like the place where they'd need to drill is unreachable by vehicle at this point. They'd have to build roads to get the equipment in. That doesn't sound like much of an option.

If only they had asked for the genius' help. No one would have died and the kids would already be with their loved ones. There are no limits to what that glorious individual can do. A god amongst men.
Wow, do you hate Musk because he is rich and smart or just because you wish the kids and coach dead??
Enlighten us?

I'm sure they've got their own mining and tunnelling experts that know the area well.
They do not...
The technical capability of their nation is not on the same level as the type of expertise that Musk could provide. The area is largely unmapped, and covered above in Jungle. They have tons of volunteers looking for another entrance to the cave in the Jungle now, as a low tech method of rescue according to the FAQ article I linked above. (which would seem to indicate they don't even have that cave mapped internally completely yet??)

Threads like this are a great way to figure out which members to ignore.

That said, anything this guy can contribute at all is fantastic. Even if he does get his tube to them and it doesn't manage to provide a way out at least it could provide fresh air.

Too all of the weird Elon Musk haters complaining about him I ask what you are doing to help?

Why do you think Elon Musk has bleeding edge tunneling technology when all they’ve managed to dig so far is a downright simple short hole? Also the Hyperloop is bullshit so they don’t even have that for expertise...

aNd thEy ROckEtS oNLy gO Up, WtF EloN??

Srsly, if I was up shits creek without a paddle, Musk would be my "phone a friend".

They are doing nothing but hating.

All those professionals over there were so lost without Musk's input. But, hey, gotta score some PR points on a tragedy.

Agree. Maybe Musk should spend some more hands-on time at Tesla instead of reading the news and tweeting all the time.

Wait by saying that he has a track record of helping with his companies where help is needed that I'm his girlfriend? Or is it because I used the word Jackhole and ruined your delicate sensibilities. Yes he arranged power for free at locations that needed free power due to disaster. AND ALSO removed an entire islands reliance on diesel generators using effectively the same technology. NOW he wants to help these people trapped in a cave by putting the resources of another company he owns at their disposal. OH MY GOD HE IS EVIL.

Is he going to benefit if this go's well and his technology and people help rescue this team. Yes. Is he ALSO going to look like shit if his help only causes more problems. Yes.

But the fact that he is willing to take the risk with his company and the volunteers that he is arranging to help. That doesn't make him evil. He just said. "Oh hey I bet my company that digs with high tech digging stuff can help. I'll send some of them to do that. PLUS it will be a good showing for our company. That can't hurt." Of course if they botch it and cause the team to get killed because they miss something. Well that's on him too.

Also have to remember the Associated Press has a hard-on for anything "Musky". Everything he says is being plastered all over the media in some strange fashion not enjoyed by other CEOs and the like. Even If Musk made zero press releases about this, the second people with equipment that says "BORING LLC" "TESLA" or even "SPACEX" arrive on the scene, every news media outlet will be talking about how Musk is saving the Thai kiddies.

To the haters, he is another "rich white man"...

To his fanbois, he is the second coming...

To me, he is simply another person the media is crucifying for the sake of consumer ratings... But hey that's what happens when you are a successful business person in America when you are not an American citizen by birth. Seriously, If the media scrutinized every word every CEO in America says like they do Musk, well then the media itself would be out of job...

Take VW for example... billion dollar lawsuit for skirting emission standards... YET every carmaker in America was doing the same thing. The second that VW got hit with that, every manufacturer put out service notices to "Re-calibrate the PCM for better engine efficiency". VW was the only one hit with the lawsuit because non-american, and the media never "investigated" it like they did VW. Selective "Journalism" for the win.

Is it journalism being selective? A quick google search turns up multiple hits in regards to other automakers. It isn't the journalists, it's the fining governments.

It's why MS and Google gets billions in fines in Europe, and BNP Paribas and Volkswagen gets billions in fines in the US.

I hadn't heard this. Is this documented somewhere without somebody screaming on a youtube video?

Thailand is not some backwater country. And to assume that they do not know how to navigate their own mountainous jungle backyard and that Elon could somehow come in cold without any prior knowledge of the kind of environment to work in and provide something that Thailand's own experts could not have come up with is just ingenious. Does he even know how wet it could get during the monsoon? How much water comes down and how horribly difficult it becomes in the jungle?

Does it matter? The more brain power the better.

Sure. But as many news articles have mentioned they already have many of the world's experts on the ground brainstorming on a way to get those trapped out of the cave. Did he really need to insert himself in all this?

If it means helping to save people? Let me check..... Yes.

He volunteered. He isn't getting paid. He is at least trying. People can criticize him, but I don't see them helping in any way.

Each one of those kids, if rescued, had better go on to do wonderfully positive things the rest of their lives. The adult who lead them into the cave should be taken away in cuffs as soon as he exits, or purposefully left to die in the cave.

They will all be dead in about 24 hours so his drills better be able to dig at 1 mile an hour.

Elon is increasingly pissing me off.

This is basically self and company promotion. There's a dozen companies with infinitely more experience and the tech is the same.

The last year or two he's started becoming intolerable, especially since the whole Tesla battery for Australia. Look at me, a few tweets and I can fix everything.

You're a smart guy, love what you're doing, but you're getting a Messiah complex

Oh yeah? Last I checked VW was the one touting how clean their diesel was, not our domestic manufacturers, hell Navistar almost went bankrupt trying to make an emissions passing diesel truck engine that didn't need additives with good fuel economy.
