RMA pickle

My 4yr old semi-modular EVGA 750W PSU has a rattling noise, most likely due to a fan going bad and EVGA will RMA it however its my only PSU for my PC and I have to pay for the shipping. So I would be out a few bucks plus downtime on my PC for a week or so.

Would it be better just to buy a new PSU and RMA the EVGA and keep it as a spare?

I'm open to any advice here.
 
OK. Thanks for your input. I'll buy a new PSU and use the RMA as a spare. Now I just need to research into a new PSU and hopefully find deals too :)

PSU technology has def changed in the last 4 years. You'll find a deal if you keep your eyes open and check deal sites.

Same situation with one of my EVGA 650 G3 Supernova PSUs. Bought bought around 1 1/2 years ago. Is that Seaonic a good side grade from the G3 650? Don't really need 750, but would like modular. I don't do main in rebates so I am thinking of waiting for an ebay sale but I'm not sure if it will be any cheaper. And I am not sure if this PSU will last...

On another note, fuck EVGA and their smart ass customer service. They always try to wiggle out of any RMA or hardware issue... and they don't even replace cables for their PSU if defective. I hope EVGA's next line of GPUs again have cooler problems and burn down some houses and they get sued out of existence. Fuck EVGA, and fuck their jackasses that work in CS.
 
Update: EVGA is sending me a EVGA 850 BQ as a replacement. Forgot my old PSU was bronze too so I won't be keeping the new PSU as a back up and will just sell it on Craigslist. Hopefully I can make up some of the cost of the original PSU plus the $25 to ship it to EVGA. Ugh.

Why are you bitching about a perfectly-serviceable backup PSU here? Johnny Guru gave it a score of 8.5, if the price is not under consideration.

If you had paid MSRP for it t would have been poor value, but you only paid shipping.

I'm sure I did. It was shipped via USPS 2-day and I wanted to check a UPS or FedEx store after hearing the price but I had my very young children with me so ugh, I paid.

Yes, its serviceable however I just upgraded to a Seasonic fully modular PSU. The RMA'd PSU is semi-modular so if I have a issue with the Seasonic the re-cabling is gonna be a hassle, at least to me.

Okay, so you're stuck with buying another fully-modular PSU of the same brand.

I just think that the amount of times you will be using this, the time spent re-running the cables will be the shortest part of troubleshooting :D

Over how much time? Not in the lifetime of the product. You'd have to run 24/7/365 for YEARS* to make up the difference in efficiency to pay for a new PSU.

*Math for you:

If you run 400W** continuously for 24/7/365 and the difference between Bronze and Gold is 5% efficiency - 400W x 24 hours x .05 efficiency = 480W difference per day.

(480W x 365 days) / 1000 = 175.2 KW total

175.2KW x $0.10 = $17.52 Savings per year. So you're looking at 5-6 years to justify the cost of a new gold PSU vs. using the existing bronze. And that's only if you're really using it 24/7/365. Say your computer is in use 60 hours a week. You're talking about $5 and change A YEAR.

** I understand that 400W is an arbitrary number, but I think it's an average 24/7 load with a mainstream CPU/high end GPU and a workload like mining or something that would put a 24/7 load on the PSU.

I try to avoid buying shipping labels at the store.

1) Log-in to paypal
2) Go to this link: https://www.paypal.com/shiplabel/create/ <--- Only works after you log-in
3) Create your shipping label

Usually to ship something like a PSU would be $9-$12.
