Steam Link $2.50

and then used a keyboard/mouse on the couch? (diablo 3 doesn't support controllers on PC now does it?)

Correct on the keyboard and mouse (not sure about controller support in Diable). I got a wireless Logitech mouse that I put the USB receiver into the Steam Link and then I routed a usb extender cable neatly around my living room and attached a USB keyboard to it (its a gaming couch keyboard that has built in mouse pad/tray extension). I just plug in the keyboard when I want to game on the couch and then put it in the closet when I am not.

Requires an Nvidia GPU in your gaming PC as it utilizes Nvidia GameStream backend and not whatever Steam is doing.

Specifically the Embedded variant of Moonlight.

Yup that. Personally I prefer this option over the steam link as the Raspberry Pi is more powerful hardware wise then the Steam Link. The CPU in the Steam Link is not powerful at all...I tried putting a gaming mouse on the Steam Link and the high DPI made the sound stutter...kid you not (known issue I found in some forums). Basically the CPU could not keep up the mouse refreshes and the sound suffered.

Also I should add...technically you do not need to plug the controller, keyboard, or mouse into the Steam Link to make it work. If the distance from where you are sitting and actual computer is short enough for good wireless signal...you can plug components directly into PC. My computer is too far away to route USB extenders or have good wireless strength.

I am questioning why these are so cheap?

Some new government NSA type backdoor bullshit they are trying to push on people?

I will order one but it probably comes at a cost somewhere in the liberty department. It makes absolutely no sense to sell these so cheap.

USB over ethernet works great. Run an extra cable to the room or whatever and use that instead.

Thanks for the heads up. I am definitely going to grab one of these. I have an xbox controller, should I get the Steam controller?

Looks like I'm going on a road trip to get one and may pick An extra up to cover fuel

I wouldn't bother, having those normal sticks are far easier imo.

I do like the Xbox 360 controller I purchased for platformers on my PC. Plus I feel that it might make integration easier if I use the same controller I use at my PC. It is very rare that I still use it but if I start gaming on the the big screen (70inch) vs my PC monitor (34 ultra wide 3440x1440) then I may want to be able to switch back and forth with little effort if my better half wants to watch something on the Roku.

edit:

I just realized I have to have the Xbox 360 receiver attached to it for it to work. Not sure if I want to bounce it back and forth since I have Fortress case with the receiver inside.

Mouse emulation with controllers is stupid. Gotta figure out how to play forza horizon 3 with this thing. But otherwise cool and well worth the 10 bucks to use as a htpc

Bought one... wanted to buy 2, don't want to pay shipping twice. Would go to Gamestop but their search for if it's in stock in store seems fuxxored.

Is it much hassle to have one type of controller with the Steam Link and different type with my PC. Will i have to constantly re-bind buttons?

Also are there any functions that are Steam Controller only?

This is exactly what I do. I move controller back and forth to my PC which also has a 3440x1440 display.

I trust our government less than anyone I know... but you are being ridiculous.

This is simply nothing more than a fire sale:

No, as long as the controller is natively supported by steam/slink/game, like a 360 controller with dongle or xbone with bluetooth. I play FO4 + GOW4 and without doing anything, my 360 controller is recognized and the in game icons change from keyboard/mouse buttons to xbox buttons. Ps3 controller also works but I didn't like it as the buttons need some remapping. Steam/slink saves your controller profile so even if you remap it wont need to be done again.

I grabbed the Steam Controller and SteamLink a couple years ago on a flash sale for 29.99.
SteamLink works flawless at 1080p via Ethernet. Wireless it was flawless at 720p gaming but hiccuped at 1080p. But that was the old G/N wireless. I would expect much better performance on our new 5Ghz wireless but unfortunately since I moved; I've not got the SteamLink out of the box.

My 'gigabit' 802.11ac router easily does 1080p60 streaming. Totally worth it.

I find I can only do 4k60 streaming on much faster hardware.

It just makes no sense that a device they sell for 50 is being sold for free essentially. Nothing at this cost in America is this cheap with out a price to pay in so e other department only to be discovered at a later time. Lately it has been our privacy. Look at the ultra cheap Google home bullshit or cheap ass Alexis devices spying on everyone ... confirmed.

I was surprised my net gear wireless n router is only giving me a 3.42ms latency. I just wish I could use multiple from one pc.... Figure vms would ruin the experience

Or conspiracy crap aside this is just a way to get devices in homes so people are more inclined to buy steam games. I could believe that too just as much.

I don't think this necessarily qualifies as a fire sale. Steam link has gone on sale at other Steam sales for $5. They often sell out. Yet later valve builds more and sells more. I think given that info its more likely they just know their best shot at getting into the living room is not Linux and steam machines its something like link.

After 6 hours+ of driving, I got the last few left in the country. Been wanting one of these for years and wanted to get out of the city, so why not, they were sold out on the first day in my City and most surrounding areas/cities.
Managed to grab another one, so going to sell it to cover fuel xD

Grabbed a controller as well. Little birdy told me they will be on a serious discount from Monday in New Zealand, they also arranged for me to return it in trial period for refund to get the new price (which will easily cover any remaining fuel and some). EB-Games you rock!

My local supplier is not re-stocking the steam-link. This is their last sale, probably going to release a 4k version in future, if it sold well enough?

I have to admit steams streaming tech works incredibly well and is super compatible with random controllers. Been using the steamlink beta on my android phone with a random ipega Bluetooth controller and every key mapped itself with no setup. Plays just like an Xbox controller in games (button layout wise). Played 20 minutes of assassin's creed origins and ping never went above 4ms over my N network.

Have you checked out the innards? The Steam Link uses legacy hardware- the same CPU that the 1st gen Google Chromecast uses- and a GPU that was on the GalaxyTab 3 (2013). I doubt it cost Valve $10/unit to make when it debuted three years ago.

I think they're still running through their initial supply. Clearly, the "PC-Gamer-gaming-on-the-couch-w/TV" crowd isn't as huge as Valve thought it would be. (and the ethernet recommendation kept a lot of buyers away) The conspiracy-theorist in me believes the Steam Link users were essentially beta testers for the Android/iOS and Smart-TV (Samsung) versions of Steam Link.

Steam In-Home Streaming has been around since 2014, and is as mature as it's going to get. The Steam Link really shines with 802.11ac routers. I updated my old b/g/n router two years ago- and I've got three Links now, and only the AVR/Big TV one is hard-wired.

I agree, the performance on AC WiFi has been at or near the performance I saw at my old place using Ethernet. Not perfect but absolutely good enough.

Ya I have been using it for desktop to desktop for a while now, but the android version is fairly new and works surprisingly well for a beta.

I noticed when I ordered mine that it comes with an ethernet cable, can anyone tell me if it is CAT6 or higher?
I have a gigabit network and I ran a CAT6 ethernet cable from my computer to my router through the attic and walls so I would actually benefit from it shipping with a CAT6 cable.

doubt it. cat5 will do gigabit

even just cat5 does gigabit. and it will never use close to that bandwidth. at highest settings its like 35-50Mb/s for the stream.

I bought one to play mame games in the living room.. messed about getting it working then entirely lost interest/ forgot I had it ..until just now.. should probably dust it I guess?

Had a little sit down and trial last night, was easy as pie to setup. I noticed some banding and similar artifacts on direct LAN off the PC. Is that able to be removed by upping bandwidth to 35-50mb/sec? Or is it just some lossy 8bit compression?

Cheers

It works great for what it is. I used it to stream some stuff to my bedroom TV via wifi and occasionally play a few games. That being said, it's kind of awkward. It has a lot of bluetooth glitches, and when in desktop mode occasionally glitches out on you anyway. To the point where I've kind of just opted to use my laptop in my room anyway. It's just too unreliable. Fine if you're only playing games though I suppose.

go into steam's settings on the pc and crank up the stream quality for clients and the same in the link.
