I don't know what that is, but it is clear that something is going on. It is so tough to tell. If not playing, could it be aögae growth?

I'd probably disassemble it and investigate. If that is the plating I'd try to file a warranty claim.

I never went went with transparent tops on any of my blocks. I'm starting to wonder if that was a good idea.

Since I'm blind as bat, I had my wife look at it and she described it as like pieces of the "silver came off and like you can see the ridges of the silver being higher then the copper."

That sure does sound like the nickel plating coming off...

Is it under warranty? These blocks don't seem like they could possibly be old enough yet to have this happen, at least not unless they have been abused with mixed metals or something like that.

Which baffles me because I thought we were done with the years of nickel plating coming off!

Yeah card is only a couple months old, only thing in my loop is distilled water with monsoon silver bullet, a rampage monoblock and three copper radiators

Which is weird because I done nickel plated ek and other brands of cpu blocks with silver coil or silver bullet without the plating coming off
did you use any anticorrosion additive before? silver is antibacterial but can cause galvanic corrosion or whatever its called without an inhibiter.

Nope, never needed it before. interesting gigabyte replied with the following.

From the pictures, it looks like algae grow inside the waterblock.

To prevent alga growth, silver or chemical needs to be combined with coolant for the cooling system

yeah well GB isn't a water cooling company. ive never seen algae that's brown and eats into nickel and you did have silver in it...
or maybe there were flaws in the block and water flow is picking at it.

The crappy thing about those Gigabyte blocks is that you can't disassemble them without removing the glued-on front fascia.

RMA that thing. If possible, ask to exchange it for an air-cooled card that you can find a third-party block for. You need to be able to disassemble your waterblocks - Gigabyte are idiots for designing theirs in such a way that you can't.

That's what I am guessing. A combination of a poor plating job and the silver did it in, where neither wouldd have been enough on their own.

Manufacturing defects happen in every process. Sometimes they are caught in inspection, other times not.

I'd try to RMA it. Judging by the fact that their support just recommended using silver antimicrobial additives, it doesn't sound as if that would be a problem with their RMA.

^ what they said! you haven't done anything they didn't recommend so rma should not be an issue. ask aboot cross shipping so you dont have down time.

Don't take it apart.

Gigabyte will illegally void your warranty for unscrewing anything. Even if you were just changing the thermal paste.

Good luck with Gigabyte's slow ass RMA process. You'll see what I mean.

Definitely. When I suggested opening it to look closer I didn't realize it was a Gigabyte pre-assembled block.

Certainly don't take it apart. OP: Good luck with the RMA. I have no experience with Gigabyte. Hopefully you'll have a better experience.
