Steam Link $2.50

I found the steamlink best performs on wired with low latency, with wireless I did find a range of 7 to 11ms latency, which was fine for games that were not fast pace.

This might sound like a stupid question, but can the Steam Link play non Steam games? I have tons of Origin, Uplay, Blizzard, and other games. It's kind of useless if I can only play certain games from my library.
This was answersaa few posts above this.

Going to go pick one up tonight. 5 New Zealand sheckels is worth it

Cheers for heads up!.

OOS across the city. Damn. Hope the sale lasts for a bit longer.

Get the $5 off 30 from paypal if you are buying from steam too its on slickdeals to lazy to link
Add custom amount for wallet hack too if you don't want to pick anything up.

You can mix and match anything for $30, like a controller combo would work, or games,

Also lol at valve today was the first day I noticed steam links ethernet port is only "fast ethernet" 100 mbs.

This seems to be a part of the Summer sale going on (goes on until July 5) with the Steam Controller and a number of other games, too.

I might pick up the Steam Link bundle with the Dark Souls 3 + Steam Controller bundle on the side. Seems like the Steam Controller is $10 cheaper when bundled with a game versus bundled with Steam Link.

This might not work outside of the U.S. but here's the link to the list of Steam hardware on sale and the Controller bundles:
https://store.steampowered.com/sale/controllergames/

How does this compare to Moonlight?
Moonlight uses Nvidia Streaming to stream to their software on a LAN and across the internet with some port forwards. Software runs on Android or windows.

This is a hardware box you can connect to a TV and plug in controllers with little to no configuration and be streaming locally from you PC. The back end streaming uses Steam instead of Nvidia software.

Both have their uses cases.

I use moonlight to stream to my phone when I'm not at home and a steamlink in my living room when I am.

Hmm.. I have one that I paid full price for when they first released.. had all sorts of problems with it so I stopped using it.. maybe there's been an update. Used to play rimworld on the big screen, worked great, until it didn't.. and then it'd just drop to desktop, and steam would crash.

Got one of these last year with the controller bundle. Toook forever to finally ship.

Never used the Link. Controller is ok. My library of games is sparse on full controller support, but some things play well with it.

Think I read that it only needs something like 30mb/s for a good stream which is why it works on any WiFi (providing your getting good signal). No reason to pay for a 1000mb port when its not needed

To give a little perspective on this - i bought one over christmas when it was on a similar offer in the UK - got the controller and steam link for £27

Just my $0.02 - steam link works great, seamless and easy to set up, and truth be told when i run over Ethernet to pc and steamlink - the input lag is negligible.
On the controller front, while its a good concept im not a huge fan of the haptic pads and kind of wish I hadn't bothered. The steam link supports ps3 and 4 controllers out the box I believe (im now using ps3 controller on steam link app on my fireHD10 tab - see below).

I am now also using the free steam link app for android (which i believe is coming out for ios shortly also, bit of a battle going on) - this works almost as well straight off, so if you have an amazon firetv for example and have the play marketplace, give that a go first as you may just end up with the same thing as a freebie, without additional boxes. Works great on even my slightly underpowered android tablet.

its a bargain at this price, althoguh shame the shipping is 3x the cost of the device - if I were you unless you have tried the controller and like it (and dont have a ps3, ps4 or xbox controller) - then i would pass on it.

I found some issues early on as well. However they were remedied when I Disabled Steam - Beta opt-in in the settings. The week to week patches were boning the Link, but its worked fine since I disabled the beta.

What is your reference to the fire TV? Steam link can connect to a fire TV on another television?

Thanks for the heads up Kyle! I owned a Steam Link for a while and will just toss out my own personally observed caveat; action games are not an ideal experience for this device. Playing games like Pinball Arcade had a jarring input latency. If you are doing turn based games or something along those lines it is fine. I suppose if you are not too picky, at this price, its hard to pass up.

I think this must boil down to networking components, TV/display, controllers, etc for this device.
I feel fairly confident I could play a first person shooter with this Steam link on my setup and still do fine. --- even on wifi. It feels just like sitting in front of my PC to me.
The little measuring tool shows me 3-5ms lag max on AC wifi. 3-5ms of lag is not enough to make much difference, if any.

My setup, for reference

The PC in my sig connected via gigabit LAN to my Asus AC-3100 router directly.
The Steam Link connected via 5Ghz AC Wifi (two floors up) to the Asus AC-3100 router.
Xbox 360 wired controller and or wired mouse/keyboard.
24" PS3 monitor (1080P)

This is a lot of positive feedback for this device.....ordered one last night. Although I love my monitor it would be nice to play certain games in my living room on the 65'' 4k.

Seemed to good to pass up.

I grabbed the Steam Controller and SteamLink a couple years ago on a flash sale for 29.99.
SteamLink works flawless at 1080p via Ethernet. Wireless it was flawless at 720p gaming but hiccuped at 1080p. But that was the old G/N wireless. I would expect much better performance on our new 5Ghz wireless but unfortunately since I moved; I've not got the SteamLink out of the box.

Just ordered the controller bundle with this, at 66% off that's a deal too, I don't have any Xbox stuff anymore, and I've heard good things about the controller once you get used to it. This may mean I might have to suck it up and run some CAT5 to my living room instead of using my powerline network adapter.

I have one and for $2.50 it was a no brainier to order a 2nd. I found a wired connection is really a must to really have a good experience.

Its nice to be able to run Rocksmith in the living room or continue some of my story games without being stuck at my gaming desk.

I have to agree, its perfect for us PC gamers who just want to sit our asses on the couch every once and a while for single player/story games.

$2.50, they must have a warehouse full of Steam links and are desperate to be rid of them.

I found it to be ok (when wired) for most things, but didn't like the lag on the twitch shooters (Borderlands TPS didn't work well for me) even with a controller. Pinball FX2 was ok. YMMV.

So if you never touch your gaming PC, this could be a good solution for TV access. But personally, I use my PC all the time at 1440p... max rez on Steam link is 1080p. If you don't change the in-game settings to 1080p, it will "auto downgrade" the rez for you to 1080p. I found that when it does this automatically, it didn't work so hot and was very jumpy. Setting the games natively to 1080p largely solved this problem... but then when I play on my desktop I have to switch back... it's not ideal. So 99% of time it sits on my test bench and collects dust. I would have sold it long ago, but Valve just gives these things away, not worth anything.

I would love something that just did point to point HDMI conversion through a network. Back and forth from whatever source, PS4, PC etc. I'm tired of moving my PS4 back and forth to/from the living room.

Yeah, i've also found that when I launch games I have to manually switch to 1080p in the settings which isn't a big deal. My desktop display is 3440x1440 so its very clearly all screwed up until I do that. No big deal though.

Eh, what the hell...I'll give it a whirl. It'll give me an excuse to use some of the games in my steam library.

Who handles the hardware payment and delivery stateside?
I'm curious because if I can't use one trick on one I've found that's in stock a while away, then I have to order from USA via freight forwarding or paying an [H]'r to send it..

It defaults to Steam Big Picture mode...but then there is an official option in Steam Big Picture to go to your desktop. I have successfully streamed Diablo 3 to the Steam Link for couch comfort.

and then used a keyboard/mouse on the couch? (diablo 3 doesn't support controllers on PC now does it?)

Just went and got one at gamestop for $10. If it's any good, I will probably get a couple more.

yea i saw that during check out

only available in the usa continental USA 48 states ..did not question it since i am in one
?

Also available in Germany for around the same price:

Don't even try with multiplayer with the steam link or any streaming device for that matter in my opinion. I have a ethernet connection going to mine and there is to much lag time between the input of the controller/mouse and keyboard and the multiplayer game. At least thats been my experience with game streaming (both the steam link and Moonlight on a Raspberry Pi).

I ordered a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ a few days ago and I was wondering if I could have Steam stream on it, just for shit and giggles. You got more first hand info?

I wish I could get one at this price, but living in Canada... nope!

I got one cheap though a couple of years ago but when I moved homes last year, it accidentally ended up in a donation box to Goodwill.

Oh well, I hope someone out there is enjoying my unintended donation.
