AMD Radeon Vega 12 and Vega 20 Wave Hello From Ashes Of The Singularity Database

At Computex AMD already announced Vega20, a die shrink of Vega, at 7nm. They mentioned they have working engineering samples.

Seems legit. That account has lots of different AMD configurations and tests.
They do send ES cards to India too as we see them on shipment manifests, so I guess they get the poos to test them out for them.
I don't understand this bench so well though but it seems that the Vega 20 isn't performing near as good as a 580, yet..
580 has options far higher across the board and is faster with a lesser CPU and ram.

Didn't they do this last time? Have some clock hobbled ES and ran benchies?

Clock hobbled or not, it’s great to see AMD moving into 7nm chips this early.

Sometimes it's 3-4 months after these leaks until you see market. Other times it's 6-7 months, like Vega this time.

At 4K?

Yeah both are 4k and from same user, slightly different system and settings.
It's a vega 20 on 2700k 16gb system ram vs 580 on 1800x 8gb system ram

I'm just surprised at the RX 580 & 4K.

It's an AMD friendly title, actually optimised for AMD stuff. So Vega 20 must be running very low clocks then, as other Vega results are in 50s average and 30s minimum for extreme (higher settings).
Vulkan is also great with both manufacturers, I hope it gets more use.

This is AMD... we're likely looking at Q1 '19.

That said, if the move to 7nm brings TDP down and gets us just 10-15% more performance over current Vega, this may be my next card regardless of NVidia having lapped them on the track.

Indeed Vega needs way better scaling to be interesting as a gaming card on 7nm. The problem ls that if there going for the same characteristics as Vega 56 the card would end up with good performance but at an expensive price. If you compare Vega 64 with the Vega 64 Liquid cooling then the difference is not something that would make sense as a product. Now if there are difference on 7nm is enough that on water cooling it still will have the same problems because the design scaled down does not make other problems go away. It might scale better on 7nm but not to the level of awesome performance in gaming.

I'd think that if they were to scale the features down to 7nm and use the extra space for more EUs, while figuring out how to increase clockspeeds, they'd at least be competitive with Nvidia's current generation, which would get them good for 4k60 and 1440p144 on modern games and decent detail levels.

Same. Next gen Nvidia still won't do 4k/120 which is the goal for next 6 years or so, plus I want a freesync TV. No other option really..
Hopefully after Navi can get another GPU on their new architecture. 7970 was a great buy with that in mind.

A lot of settings that tank performance don't add that much to the image quality, some in my view actually make it worst. 4K gaming on a decent monitor does make it hard to go back down to a lower resolution unless high refresh rate monitors you just must have. For me syncing type monitors solve the smoothness issue at lower FPS, making the need for uber expensive systems unnecessary for great game play.

Its a matter of opinion. For me, the added resolution of UHD makes things like low poly assets, low res textures and popping details in the distance SUPER apparent.

get the poos? The heck?

lol maybe google what endearment means before associating endearment with shitting street names.
I did mean it semi-seriously - it's a matter of pride there. I have a photo laying around of a new village loo that was instead of used, worshipped xD
Might end up there in a few months for biz, it'll be interesting.
