NVIDIA - Anti-Competitive, Anti-Consumer, Anti-Technology

My last several GPU's have been Nvidia, not by choice, but because the competition had nothing fast enough for me.

I can't wait for some real competition here, maybe even from Intel in 2020? (As much as I consider Intel to have many of the same business practice flaws as Nvidia.)

I agree to both of those statements. As of right now AMD's graphic cards for the laptop end of things leaves me with little options.

Desktop wise Vega 64 seems to have been a little too late but benchmark wise it at least seems to provide some competition for the 1080. I know we got the Ti and the Titan that are completely unmatched but in some ways it feels like AMD isn't completely incapable of providing a current gen product that is useable for it's time frame, just nothing to hold the crown in the graphics arena for years now.

Which one was it that they sparked the Fermi architecture around with a large trout with? I took Hards advice and owned that card for a good while, it was an excellent card.

I am not Nvidia fan boy but have been caused serious issues by AMD/ATIs cards such that I am vocal about them.
I try to be fair, not only for myself but for the advice I give, but found AMDs cards made me struggle so badly I had to give up on them (please ask).
I wasnt aware of the full extent NVidia went with their negative campaigns until hearing this. Which I have to blame on them primarily, but also on tech sites that didnt push the issues strongly. We rely on them for advance notice of issues which are not in our grasp.
This kind of manipulation by NVidia goes unchallenged because we often have no clue we are being mislead until a long time after.
We visit tech sites for tech insight, sad we didnt get it in time. (Although props to [H] for copping GPP !!)

I wish AMD could match the performance of NVidia without the infernal bugs.
I want to be able to recommend AMD cards and have periodically bought an AMD card but they have sucked so badly I had to get rid of.
I am now at the point I dont want to try again.
But this display of arrogance by NVidia makes me wish AMD can compete both with stability and performance. Failing at both will never win support.
Please AMD, give me a reason to want to buy your cards again!

After watching the complete video, I must say I would be interested to see his Jimmy Bashes ATI/AMD "Separate Video" Just to see who's the bigger monster :-p

Meh... while there have been some dick moves, it's what happens when a company produces top of the line products with zero competition. Look at Ferrari/Lamborghini/Bugatti, they produce some of the best exotic cars in the world, charge you out the ass, impose "weird" rules on some cars/buyers and they have been on top for decades.

I don't have a die hard loyalty to nvidia, but their chips are the fastest and they are built/designed well. I gave up on AMD after the never ending BS that was their R9 290X cards with their drivers. I got tired of them fixing one thing, and breaking three other things after going the 1080Ti route, gaming has just been a joy for the past year.

Come out with something fast, comparable in price, with solid software to back it up and I'll be more than happy to have an AMD card in my rig again. They just need to do what they did for GPU's the same way they kicked ass with Ryzen.

This is just the ramblings of an AMD fanboy, you know he is one when he spins NVIDIA buying competing companies into a bad thing! Or how he spins Kyro 2 GPUs failing as NVIDIA's faults because they released a document about how bad it is! The guy is a complete nut job.

AMD/ATi is as guilty as NVIDIA in 90% of these practices he mentions in the video.

ATi cheating in 3DMark, cheating in Quake 3, cheating with FP16 demotion, Tessellation factor, bad AF quality with HD4000 and HD5000 cards. And then price fixing. Also dozens of cases of rebrands and deceiving costumers with deceiving product names (RX 560). And even allegations of buying forum members as well and allowing their employees to post on social media behind fake names and even controlling the press. Save for the bumbgate, after which NVIDIA manned up and paid the pill.

You dislike GameWorks or PhysX? how about Mantle? Shader intrinsics? or forced AsyncCompute with no option to turn it off? or their specific shaders that hobbles NV GPUs in games like Dirt? Just because AMD wasn't able to sustain it's streak of exclusive tech doesn't mean they were not willing to do it.

He is also completely clueless, he claims GTX 580 was worse than HD6870, of which he is completely wrong and stupid, the GTX 580 was the leader of it's class, better than HD 6970. Even the GTX 560 was faster than HD6870.

Thanks for sharing that video. Really informative and actually reminded me of several things nVidia had done that I had forgotten about. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth...

It would be great to hear the opposing point of view.

Your rambling is no different than a Nvidia fanboy. I really don't remember AMD doing GPP Crap and selling gtx 970 with wrong specs until someone confirmed it. Hey I have a 1080ti but I call it like it is. Nvidia is 10x more shadier than ATI ever was or AMD has ever been. I don't remember AMD pulling any stunts for a while now.

That's why I said 90%, not everything NVIDIA did applies to AMD, but the majority do apply. They are no different, and until you see them in a leading position you don't really know whether they would act live NVIDIA or not.

Next thing you are going to tell me Apple is evil, Microsoft is evil, .. grow up. Leading companies have their tactics and strategies that they enforce. NVIDIA is no different.

You seem willing to give them a free pass on this, but AMD did scam us on the price of Vega. They secretly raised the MSRP by $100. The way they did it was extremely shady. The reviewers had fits about it. They reviewed it as a $499 card but then a week later it cost $599 and that really pissed off the reviewers because it would have affected what they wrote and their conclusions and whatnot.

did I say apple is evil? Nope! did I say microsoft is evil? nope! You are assuming things, when amd is in leading position and they do pull what nvidia tried to do with GPP I will do the same, say the same. I will call them out and tell them to fuck off! Who is making assumptions here? me or you? You are assuming I hate apple, microsoft and making predictions about future AMD if they were in the same position as Nvidia which hasn't happened yet.

Yes they have their tactics. But GPP was bullshit and will always be, nvidia sold gtx 970 with less usable ram and less ROPs the entire time lol and no I won't kiss nvidia's ass even though I use their product. You assumed everything and told me to grow up? I can't wait to hear whats next.

Actually you are right but it didn't help the situation when miners were picking up vega at any price. AMD couldn't even force the 499.99 price even if they wanted. I think its sort of misleading to say that they secretly raised the MSRP to 599.99 when retailers were already price gauging. You are right they should have been more clear about the bundles and such and the rebates the retailers were getting.

Informative video. Thanks for the share.

It also reminded me of a sad fact... that so much news and more traditional media outlets do such a poor job of informing (or sometimes just outright misinform) the public, that we need people like this guy (and satirists along the lines of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight) to challenge the more readily accepted / available narratives. The "Fox News" effect is harmful to us all.

I've mostly bought NVIDIA GPUs over the years (at least 3 SLI builds), with the 970 being the only real "scandal" card he talked about. It's wild how much marketing BS was going on there. Glad I was able to see through some of it during those times. I rocked my ATI 9500 Pro for a good while there XD

Thanks again for the share. Good stuff.

Great video. Glad that a scot can still post critical videos on YouTube. Freedom of speech is a powerful concept, and he uses it to expose the behavior of a powerful corporation.

Will this affect my gpu purchase decisions? Damn right it will. GPP was not single mis-step. It was nvidia doing what nvidia does.

Check my sig. I’m running some seriously old gpus. Two from mad and two from nvidia. I used to try to keep a balance. Not anymore. I can wait for amd’s next gen (I hope, and I hope it’ll be worth the wait...).

Thanks for putting the link up.

About half way through but had to pause and comment on it. Interesting that they were big parts in the downfall of 3dfx and Herccules. Shameful that they did the same things they called out Hercules on.

They have a lengthy track record of being anti-consumer. Physix not playing with ati cards? Sheesh, and I thought gameworks was bad. Cheating in 3dfx and having there Ubisoft boyfriend kill directx 10.1 in A.C. as well as Hawx 2 garbage really drives the point home.

As for the shills outsourced, well that is probably the most shameful. They made good bed fellows with Sony during that era as we all remember the PSP blogs.

Great link Kyle!

Adored is a bullhorn.
I had a debate with him on Youtube pre-Polaris.
He spoke a lot of uninformed crap, got personal and got lost when I got technical….Polaris released...he was wrong I was right...his retort:
"Hahaha...I have more viewers than you!".

He is not a place to go for facts...but if you want biased FUD...he is a "source".

Anti-consumer... Maybe a bit, but to their credit, their products generally work, perform well, and are well supported (give or take the odd case over the years).

Anti-competitive? They have no competition period in any of the spaces the compete in. What do they have to do to not get this label? Hand over all their IP to the competition? Give AMD or Intel some money for R&D? Throw them a free design? I think it's on the other companies to make themselves competitive. Since their acquisition of 3DFX (which is in the distant past) I really don't see much that immediately springs out this way. Sure they have this or that "program" like TWIMTBP or however you want to acronymify that, but so do their competitors.

Anti-technology? They have the pinnacle of just about everything in their field. Just because they haven't released a new gaming GPU, doesn't mean they're just sitting there doing nothing. They'll release it when there's a reason to. They're a business. I'm sure there are daily meetings about strategies for releases. For all anyone knows, they've got even the following iteration all taped out. Meanwhile they're also in general computing, AI, automotive, mobile. What else do they need to develop?

They aren't always my favorite company. They've pissed me off a bit here or there. (especially in the bundled software departmen... experience... something something...) I also like to cheer on the underdog on occasion, but really... People just like to bash I think.

This is the whole point of the video. Would it of been too much to ask for the NDF to watch some of the video before diverting and denying the claims.

You make it sound like Nvidia has always been the top dog and AMD was just too incompetent all of these years. Throwing others like TSMC under the bus, paid shills, Agesa aquisiation, 3dmark cheating are just a few that have made them they consumer darling they are today.

Have you seen his videos with the hindsight of history?
Go back...look at his videos...and see how bad his videos really are...on the technical aspects...he is a joke.
But people heve short memories so the cycle goes:

AdodredTV post some technical crap aka (AMD rules, NVIDIA is evil, AMD will out-preform them with product X!)
Then prodcut X launches and fails to live up to his hype.
Does he care?
Nope.
He just moves on to the next thing and does the same:

But his says "NVIDIA is evil"....so he a a dedicating following, not interested in the facts or accuracy of AdoredTV...but he is "ANTI-NVIDIA so he is GOOD!".

He's not. July 31st you'll see the first official info on the 1180. Told you "Long time away" is relative.
You're right, on further thought, the bean counter move would be to release a slight rebadge of older parts to maximize profits.

Rollo and Keysplayr at the AnandTech forums were eventually proven to be nVidia shills because nVidia finally decided to have their shills come out and disclose their affiliation. The big problem for tech forums currently is that AMD does not do this. Their shills are completely undercover and there are probably a bunch of them operating right here on the HardOCP forum actually. If you want to talk about viral marketing, nVidia is doing it ethically. AMD isn't. There is evidence of AMD attempting to turn legitimate tech sites into AMD flog sites also. I'm sure they have probably been successful doing that to some websites also. It's not like they would come out and tell us they are doing it.

Lol

I always wonder how it becomes okay just because everyone does it lol! This is a debate worth having, no one should just get a pass. Hey they all do it, so its okay? Not sure if that is exactly what you are saying.

I think that is the moral equivelancy argument. When that doesn't work, attacking the source of the criticism is another method as someone is doing here.

I was surprised He didn't discuss the segmentation of the market when they stopped shipping their flagship card (titan) and instead started selling a midrange GPU as their flagship product.
He has talked about this a lot in the past, he mentions that AMD is responsible for this too due to their lacklustre products.

he wasn't very "friend of AMD" with Polaris and Vega, in fact he was very dismissive in those videos, definitely disappointed. His past videos on Nvidia would be more in line with "NVIDIA rules" mentality.

as fro intel nobody has to, intel bring the industry loathing on their own, and are very much worth it.

Sorry, this one made me chuckle- neither console of that generation was particularly fast relative to PC hardware. Really, a console hasn't been fast since the original Xbox that ran lower-end desktop hardware, and yet it was slow for its time :D.

When they were being developed those consoles were pretty high spec to be fair and they had a 300w power budget. A whole lot more ambitious than the xbox one and ps4. What's their power budget, a little over half that? For something the size of a vcr the old boys were pretty balls-to-the-wall.

I don't disagree at all, with respect to power/price/performance- consoles do pretty well here!

My disagreement was with the comparison to high-end desktops available at the time. Consoles are typically around mid-range performance at best.

AdoredTV is *********** and he is well-known for being a fanboy.

It is what it is. I dont blame nVidia for their tactics, AMD has done some as well, maybe not as much or as fierce, but business is business.

I myself dont buy nVidia products, but I am also not a hard core gamer and my RX480 at 1080p plays everything just fine.

As long as everyone keeps buying nVidia and AMD does not compete at the high end, this is what type of company we have to deal with in the gaming industry, we have no choice.

Yeah:

I "love" how is use Charlie from Semiaccurate as a "soruce"...I rest my case.

What was the point of those videos again? Oh yes, to discredit AdoredTV and deflect from the criticism of Nvidia.

He made it very clear that the first video had AMD internal tests. In hindsight, it looks silly as AMD clearly exaggerated Polaris. This is AMDs fault, not his. Be was just doing the best with what he had at the time.

Same goes for the 2nd video. He also mentions the semi accurate editor has a bias against Nvidia, but that does not make his findings worthless. Again, it is easy to poke fun of this information in hindsight but he was just trying to get the best prediction with the intel (pun?) at hand.

It seems corporations and there most hardened supporters will not admit to ANY criticism lately. This has been very prevalent in the case of Lucasarts execs attacking critics of the Last Jedi.

Evidence? It is time to expose these black op shills! Perhaps we can try to take down their secret society from the inside. At the very least, we should be able to get a free Vega out of it for "testing purposes"...

(on a sidenote: If NVIDIA is purely evil, how come they perform faster? I would suffice to say that in order for the preposition to be true, NVIDIA would have to perform slower, but use their "evilness" to keep their market-share.)

I point my arguments towards AdoredTV.
You seem to be pointing at me.
Ball vs. Man

See the difference?

I do like the accent, but over an hour? Shit... I need to get showered and dressed still

Having only listened to his first point, the origin of the name, it will probably be entertaining but sounds pretty conspiracy-theory-ish so far..

Good thing I saw the video in full, then read the comments. The paid shilling tidbit was very informative...

You didn't state what kinds of issues you're having with your 1080Ti. I've had my pair since launch last year and they've been fantastic across 4k, VR and my 3x 1080p 144hz 3D monitors. I've had issues with installation with a number of Geforce driver versions the last 6 months or so where the installer either didn't work on my Surface Book 2 or got stuck with 3D Vision drivers on my sig rig but nVidia released a hot fix version a few days later addressing those problems. Why the same problem kept cropping up after it was fixed in a hotfix driver is a little concerning though.

As others have said, especially at the higher end, nVidia is as dominant now in PC gaming as it's ever been and could soon extend that lead depending on how the 11xx series turns out. For all of the recent nonsense around GPP nVidia has executed very well technically regardless. So of course more competition is the answer but it's going to be a while/
