ASUS claims "bent CPU pins" for motherboard returned for warranty claim, charging $117

I'm helping my friend build up a system. The ASUS motherboard we are using boots up, but only if two out of the four memory slots are filled. I tried different combinations of memory sticks to be certain that the problem is with the motherboard, not the memory sticks.

We (I really) put in the CPU very carefully. I've done this many times before, and never with any problems. If there were CPU pins bent, the board was delivered that way. How do I impress upon ASUS that we did not bend the pins? What do I need to do to get ASUS to accept responsibility?

They want to charge my friend $117 to repair the bent pins.

They have the motherboard now, and they want to charge the $117 to repair and return the motherboard. They did send along a picture of the CPU socket, but it's impossible to see any bent pins.
 
$117? I am going to assume he has a newer chip.

I would suggest you just put that $117 toward a new mother board.

Once those pins are bent, who knows what else is going on.

I will say this. Always use EXTREME caution when placing a CPU into a socket. Be mindful of the retaining bracket, any possible snags, etc etc. I've seen guys rushing this part of the build and end up getting the cpu knocked loose that then falls into the pins. Not accusing you personally of this.

Bent pins are a pain in the ass. I bent some and actually hired out a hippy jeweler that worked at a local shop that sells crystals and stuff and he has a high powered electric magnifying workstation setup and he offered to bend the pins back. He said he did but the work is so small he couldn't promise anything. I've seen into one of those sockets and it's crazy what it looks like at 1000x or 10000x.
 
Post the pic. I want to see what the asus team sent you. I do some pin repair so I've seen/repaired lots of boards myself.

I'll havve to ask my friend. But he waid that when he enlarged the picture, all he got was a bunch of pixels.

I'm doing a separate post to describe how ASUS basically said, "Nyah, nyah, you can't positively prove that we sent you a board with bad pins. So we won't fix the board for free." Short version is: ASUS just lost two customers. And I buy high-end boards and graphics cards, but I won't be buying them from ASUS in the future.

Typical Asus. I think this is there go to reason as to why they can't fix it.

Yeah ASUS bent the pins. OP if you'd been in a country that actually enforced warranty you'd be OK. I once claimed warranty on two(!) 7970 GHz smelling burned yeah...It was my projector. ASUS put no fight and I got 2 brand new GPUs. Complain at your consumer laws. My 751GY asus I bent my mistake about +45 degrees...no problem sending it RMA. And by mistake I mean drunken stupor...still trucking

edit. Now that I think about it I have a lot of ASUS stuff dating back to 2000's that still work. Incl my voodoo5.

It's a shame, I tend to like Asus products, but their RMA department is a bag of smashed assholes.

If you don't have pics of the board before it went out, and it didn't go out with the factory socket/pin protector (and pics showing you installed it correctly) - yeah, they F'ya. Totally ridiculous that it seems to be the standard at Asus.

I sent one motherboard out for repair. They sent it right back saying it was fixed, after a few weeks. Didn't say what they found. Probably suspiciously was still there upon return... Guess that's better than being told you have to pay a good deal of money to get your mobo back.

Last Asus board I sent for RMA I took multiple pictures of the CPU socket, printed them out and sent them in with the motherboard. No claim that I bent pins and they sent me a new mobo because they didn't have refurbished mobo in stock!
