NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Who here has put a 8700k CPU or plans to into their M1? I want to start following their posts. I have an extra case sitting here and it needs a project.
Me.

Case is still open though as struggling with GPU cooling. Delidded the 8700k which was easy with a debauer tool - I posted on that elsewhere here.

Using the Gigabyte board because it allows me to use a Dark Rock TF (just). CPU temps are great - no overclock attempted yet because I'm not going to get to a realistic figure until I can close the case.

I just reread your post from 16 April. What have you tried to improve the GPU cooling since that time?

Busy life at the moment so nothing really. Bought a splitter cable and PWM converter so I can operate the case fans from the GPU but now unable to get the shroud off my GPU cooling solution to leave the heatsink. I think the heatsink is an accelero-alike so ought to be OK.

I may have to remove the entire assembly, detach the fans, and then reapply thermal paste etc. Might actually work out well to do that. The other benefit of using the current heatsink is that I can retain the backplate.

Also bought the nice SF cables from Corsair which should help both routing and airflow but only just got those today and I won't have a free weekend to fit them for another few weeks.

I'll get there eventually

On the downside I have the sides off my case at the moment and I still occasionally get alarms going off in Assassins Creed Origins and 83c temps on the GPU. I think this is more about poorly directed airflow so should get better when there are a couple of fans pulling cool air in a more controlled way. It's a natively overclocked card so might just be the way it is.

I've seen many people mention the Pro cables from Corsair for their SFX power supplies. They look really nice. I just bought an SF600 myself (didn't know about the new Platinum model that is coming out) and I will try to make do with the stock cables. I have the tools to modify and shorten them if necessary, as I did for my son's M1 build.

It seems strange to me to have such high temperatures with the panels off. I agree that checking and maybe reapplying thermal paste may be a good thing to do, especially if it's necessary to remove the stock fans. Good luck and keep us posted.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Thank you and will do. Everyone has been so helpful here that I feel I owe you all a final result!. The jobs I need to do now require the bright illumination of daylight, and I get home pretty late most days and just want to get an hour of gaming in before hitting the sack and heading back to the office. I did get a few hours last week but that's when I found out that I couldn't get the fans off my GPU - next time I'll just take the whole thing off anyway so fingers crossed I'll have some time in the next two weeks.

This may be the iconic air-cooled M1 build. Clean and cool thanks to the NH-U9S, the Arctic Accelero Xtreme III, and their dual Noctua fans. The custom sleeved PS cables look great. The Gelid VRM heatsink is perfect (too bad there isn't a 1080 Ti version).

Well done.

Or a Morpheus 2 w/ 15mm Noctuas if you have a Vega :)

Very nice build, similar to mine.

May I ask you a few things please:

  • Is the Gelid VRM cooler compatible with the 1080TI ? I'd be very interested to get one if it is, to install on my 1080 Ti too
  • Could you please tell me the total length of your 24pin cable and the 8pin GPU cable? If I'm not mistaken these are custom made ?
Thanks in advance !

Actually, I believe the "Big Air" build for the M1 has the NH-C14...

I need to find this "Big Air" build.

Still, I hear you. What I meant was that for most builds today the compatibility and availability of the NH-U9S (or D9L) is what many M1 owners will choose. Add the Accelero Xtreme and you have a really good air cooling solution, especially if you have a window side panel.

It sounds like he's calling it the Mcase N1 and I want to strangle him because of it.

Yes, he is calling it the "N1". This is confirmed in the companion article on the Gamers Nexus website. I added a comment to the article to point this out, but so far it's unchanged. Oh well. The content is still good.

How does a guy that reviews computer hardware for a living not know about the M1? It has been out for years. What a moron.

Hang on. Steve is no moron. I don't know if he's ever reviewed the M1, but I doubt it if he's confusing "N1" and "M1". They sound very similar.

He's a moron to me now. How is he going to literally be in the business of making videos about computer parts, including cases, and not know what the M1 is? Isn't his job to do research and validate things? How are we supposed to take him seriously if he can't even get the name of the product right? He also needs to grow up and get a haircut. No grown man needs long hair. Unsubbed.
I blame dyslexia.

He's definitely not a moron. GamersNexus is one of the best outlets for in-depth PC hardware reviews. However, they have not traditionally reviewed ITX cases. They recently started actually, so I hope they get to the M1 eventually, but they've not had much experience with SFF. So I'd cut him some slack and enjoy the video. ;)

Must be nice to never make a mistake. I'm personally happy they did this video so people can see that it ain't cheap coming up with a case like the N1 -- oops M1 -- and other small production cases. So now I can refer them to this video so they can understand why the case costs $200+.

Here is a rough draft test fit of all the new parts. It's real tight and the order in which you install parts matters a lot. Next up on the agenda is to make my own custom cables and fiddle around with routing before it goes in the new case. Temps seem good so far and I don't even have the direct die plate on, or any liquid metal.

With an ITX board, best to max out those two RAM slots...

im pretty decided on the corsair RGB ram, their new Pro line doesnt have 16gb dimms.

System requirements for Premier Pro are "8 GB of RAM (16 GB or more recommended)" so 16 should be plenty.

supposedly the more ram the better for bigger jobs but im at the hobby level so im thinking 16gb will work.

I was just checking about Vengeance Pro memory from Corsair's statement from Computex 2018 and they state "These new memory DIMMs will ship with memory seeds of between 2666MHz and 4000MHz at launch, with 8GB and 16GB modules."

So it looks like they will have the 16GB available they are probably just not listed yet.

Looks great! Is this a C14 or a C14S? I wonder if a U9S would perform better given the airflow restrictions, and that way you'd get to show off a bit of the motherboard too.

What PSU is that and what fan are you using for the CPU cooler?

so add that to my wait list lol along with the plat psu.

It's a C14S cooler and the PSU is the Silverstone 800 watt titanium model. I can actually tell you in a few minutes if the u9s performs better. I highly doubt it will given the sheer size of the c14s.

Edit: So far the results are unanimously in favor of the U9S. So much so, that I'm going to retest everything. From the first run, not one single component was cooler running the C14s which I find remarkable. I'll update when I get some more results.

I recently replaced GTX1070 the stock cooler with an Arctic Accelero Xtreme III, and it seems to allow a minimum fan speed of 27%.
While that's reasonably quiet, I really want a silent-at-idle build, so it's a bit disappointing.

Is there any way to do this, such as via a bios update?
