Epic Games has announced that Fornite will be coming to the Nintendo Switch, and sooner than expected, it is available now as a free download on the Nintendo eShop. However, TechCrunch is reporting that Sony is blocking cross-platform play between the Switch and the PS4, similar to what they already do with the Xbox One.

Awesome! Now you can use the portability of the Switch to wet yourself anywhere instead of being tied to the sofa! I have still never played Fortnite.

We’ve also reached out to both Nintendo and Sony on the matter, to see what the hang up is here. Sony certainly appears to be the sticking point on this one, at least from the outside. The company likely sees its own massive sales figures as a competitive advantage here.

Just another reason the switch is such a neat little console.

Sony has a history of portable consoles such as the PSP and PS Vita. I actually hope they don't try and create another one. Their desire for propriety ecosystems and formats have really bit them in the end. Memory Stick, no cross platform play, no mod support, etc...

It is for these reasons that I actually hope Microsoft is the next to attempt a portable console. Their openness for things such as cross paltform play and even substantial mod support for games such as Skyrim and Fallout make me hopeful that they could actually create a successful handheld console.

In addition, their desire to bring everything under Windows 10.x could make for some interesting possibilities down the road.

As a PC gamer, I don't want a Nintendo or Sony console experience. I want the openness of a PC experience with a streamlined interface and scaling options appropriate for a handheld on the go experience. To take the Switch approach, a full PC experience when docked, and a portable mode when on the go that adjusts scaling etc... For a more simplified and streamlined on the go experience.

Most importantly, I want a choice in how I choose to play and what I choose to play. Give me that, and I will gladly buy one of these things.

You guys know Fortnite used to be a building sim PvE game right? I backed the game only to not be able to find enough friends to play with then it suddenly becomes all Battle Royal nonsense. The base game is/was still fun though.

I hate this fucking game.... And I can't stop playing it!!

My kid wanted me to start playing with him about a month ago and it would piss me off to the point I was ready to punch holes in my case but I keep playing it and now it's about all I play lately. I can't give you a reason why I keep playing it either. It's the damndest thing.

I set it to download before I left for work this morning. Will give it a shot when I get home. Does it have an option to not cross play with PC/Xbox players? I think they said it was cross play minus PS4? Or is that only accounts? I would rather not play with PC players who can build much faster with keyboard vs console controls.

Sony doesn't want people playing with their users? Never would have guessed that.

It's actually worse than that. If you ever log into your Epic games account to play Fortnite on the PS4 then you can no longer use that same account on a Xbox One or Switch. Even if you unlink your Playstation account from your Epic account, you are forever locked to the PS4 (besides PC and mobile). Epic never gives you any warning that playing on your PS4 will restrict you from using that account on an Xbox One or Switch.

I play 99.9% on PC and decided to log into my account on the PS4 just ONCE to try it out. As a result, I can now no longer use the account on my Switch. I haven't really invested much money into the game, but some players have dumped hundreds of dollars on skins and whatnot that now they can't carry over to any other console.

People don't really care about Sony not allowing cross play, but disallowing cross progression AND forever locking your account to a PS4 without a single warning has a lot of players really pissed off. I'm also not sure if this is entirely legal since Sony is locking your account, which can have significant monetary value, to their platform without a single warning.

correct me if im wrong but this seems to be the only game(again based off my memory) that is multiplay cross platform. what is so different with tbis game. for the longest time we always heard why its not doable- whether it was not financially feasable or coding etc.. then fortnite comes along and within a year a pc person can play with a switch and iphone user

Sounds like EPIC actually did something wrong. If it is your epic account that is being denied access to the switch. I see lots of people blowing up at sony but I dont think they are the ones actually at fault. Whatever tag epic is allowing them to add to your account is then being rejected when you try to log onto with the switch. Sounds a bit more involved than just everyone bashing sony. Each company is reponsible for what they allow on their own console so if you are locked out of switch, look at nintendo, of if locked out of ps4 look at sony. And epic is allowing this to happen so there is that as well.

The thing is that this is ONLY occurring with the PS4. If you log into either the Xbox One or the Switch then you are never locked to their platforms and you can use your account anywhere. Would make absolutely no sense for Epic to do this ONLY for the PS4 and none of the other platforms unless Sony had a say in it.

Additionally, Sony has been clear on their stance of not allowing cross play so adding everything together points to Sony being the culprit.

Rocket league also does this, crossplay with PC, Switch, and Xbox, and PS is locked to their own network.

That doesn't make any sense. All sony can do is add a flag to your epic account. This is allowed by epic. When you go to log onto nintendo, it checks and if it sees said flag it will deny access. It might be at sony's request, but they arent the only ones involved. Epic would allow it paid enough to do it. I am not saying sony is innocent, I am just saying they arent alone in this. Nintendo is not well known to play well with others either.

It might also be a bug and all the kids raging about it should just calm down and wait for a statement. Cross play and cross accounts are two different animals and isn't well ironed out as not much does this yet.

Not sure how this doesn't make sense. Yes, Epic is also technically "at fault" for allowing this - but this only occurs with Sony's platform and they've been outspoken on disallowing crossplay. They're both technically at fault, but none of this would've happened if it weren't for Sony's stance on crossplay and their "request".

And I highly doubt its a bug since when you try to unlink your Playstation account you have to check a box in agreement that states:

"Unlinking this service will NOT unlock restricted platforms"

And this only happens when you try to unlink your Playstation account, not any other account.

I do see your point but in general progress has always been independent of different systems, for both SP and MP games. But I do think being able to take progress (unlocks ect.) for online games and moving them to another version of the game is a great idea. I think the developers would love it to, because it creates and incentive to double dip. Say you're mainly a PC gamer but have a friend who plays it on a console, you'll likely be okay picking up the console version if you progress transfers seamlessly. But it doesn't amaze me Sony would do this. They have a player base advantage right now and want to keep players in their ecosystem. But it certainly does suck.

There were just several missteps in this whole situation:

1) Absolutely no warning, caution, or notice that logging into your Epic account on your PS4 just ONCE is enough to lock your Epic account out from being used on an Xbox One or Switch.
2) Unlinking your Playstation account keeps your Epic account locked to the Playstation platform regardless.
3) Sony can regulate who I play with, that's fine. But regulating where I can log in with my third party account that I've made purchases on from different platforms (my PC) is in no way okay. Especially when points 1 and 2 are in the equation.

This is some anti-consumer bullshit and I'm questioning the legality of it all. All players are asking for is to let them use their accounts on Xbox One and Switch; not even asking for cross play. You can use your Epic account across all platforms without a single issues unless its the PS4.
