While the Galaxy S9 Plus and S9 have overtaken the iPhone X in global market share, Apple still holds 5 of the top ten spots, making up 9.3% of the global smartphone market. Samsung pulls in behind with 6.5% total, and Xiaomi rounds it out with 2.9%.


According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse, Samsung’s Galaxy S9 series became the best seller globally, pushing Apple’s iPhone X to the third spot. The sales of Galaxy S9 series improved, driven by performance in APAC and NAM.
 
The general public is FINALLY starting to wake up to the fact that just because it's got a fruity logo doesn't mean it's the best available! About damn time!
 
It's also worth pointing out that smartphone sales are actually dropping, due to market saturation and product stagnation. That throws a whole other wrench in the works.

Apple hater for no reason but Apple hate statement here. Aside from the flagship 10 which I agree is a waste of money. For the general user which is 85% plus of the entire cell phone user base, there is no difference between Apple and any other phone company out there in mass market. It all comes down to I believe is familiarity and comfort. I am by no means a simple user and I find IOS just cleaner, more secure (apps) and just as expensive as mainstream competitors.

In general, phones are what people choose to have. A small group of people have blind allegiance to Apple these days and these are the same types for Samsung.
 
I needed an Android phone to be used for testing an app I'm developing.

So I just bought a "shit" Moto G6 for around £250.

I was astounded to find out this piece of crap was just as good, if not better than my more expensive Nexus 6!

What I'm saying is that smart phones have really gotten to the point where a £250 one is barely worse than a £1000 flagship!

Of course, a sexy girl will no longer want to go out with me when I have this piece of unsexy thing. But they never did when I had a nice phone either.

Oh yeah, I'm using the Nexus for development, and now using the the Moto G6 as my daily driver. I like that it has an SD slot.

I've owned some mid tier $200-250 phones, including many of the Moto series phones. And I've also owned many many Samsung flagship phones. Currently using a s9+. There is still a HUGE difference in the sub $300 phones and the flagships.

But I'm not saying the flagships are worth their asking price either...

Funny you should mention the s9+.

I was going to replace my Nexus with that exact phone, but now I can't think of any reason to do so.

Yes, the specs are impressive, but I just can't think why I would want one now.

To be clear, I'm not saying others should not get one, God knows I buy all sorts of stuff cause I just want it and have to have it.
 
It's a shame that the best Android phones, the Pixels, make up so little of the market.
 
At least Apple sells the SE, a 4" metallic phone for people who want it. And it isn't slow, but $349 is manageable.
 
the "WOW" is gone from phones. Now it really comes down to what set of specs : price ratio is desirable and whether you want to give your datas to apple or google. Really wish windows phones could have become a real contender just for more variety. I usually hop back and forth between apple and samsung because i start to miss features and stuff about the other and after a whole phone cycle I flip back.

that happens to all mature products. do you see people buying new washing machines every year or 2?? No, because the feature set is pretty much established.

phones have gone from calls/texts to being pretty neat little devices with all the increases of power within. But really how much more can the device do? Its not doing my laundry

Not yet....

But I have seen Bluetooth equipped washing machines. And even some that are smart devices
 
To me, new phones only really offer 2 things worth having.... better camera, better screen. Other than that, it's long since been more about the software upgrades (which are typically free) and general OS improvements.

While I don't have an iPhone, I just want something that does what I need it to do easily and reliably. Same reason I have a Honda CRV. It's boring and bland, but it ticks off all the important items. Reasonably reliable, good ergonomics and features for those with young kids (such as the back doors opening a full 90 degrees, etc), good mileage, relatively cheap parts for maintenance & repairs.

s9 was just released in March, and the data is based on April sales.
Not surprising shit is selling more.

Let's see how it holds up 8 months from now.

Not too long ago, articles said X was the best selling phone for Q1 2018.

Apple hater because I always hated the idea of a closed ecosystem and a curated app store. The FACT is that IOS is now a bloated mess, the "intuitive" design has become anything but in recent versions, and the "innovations" they have put forth are recycled Samsung tech from 3 generations ago. Face it, since Jobs died, the company has had ZERO "world changing" products, and less and less relevance in anything but STYLE and STATUS. People buy Apple because they think it gives them increased status, NOT because the tech works better. And consumers are starting to wake up to that fact.

I actually like the closed eco-system, there is less need for anti virus software running on my phone and significantly less chinese copy crap on there. Samsung is a horrible one to compare though, the software they add to what is actually a nice OS is where samsung fails, plus all the account crap they want you to have with them. They honesly put just as much marketing out there to convince everyone they are inventing new things just like apple does. My S7 finally is getting the oreo update, sad that it takes samsung so long to put it out there and then also allows the network providers to do their thing to the os as well. I am kind of a fan of apple not letting others dick with their OS, much how google does on their own phones. I like getting updates that add new features, it kind of helps with that feeling of 'an old phone' over time. When you step back, the two companies in the way they handle phones, are not that different.

As far as US sales goes, apple is still stomping, but for world sales samsung is. You gotta think there is probably some more favoritism toward a korean company overseas than there is for an american one.

We are all just consumers giving our money to large corporations as they convince us it is okay to keep raising the prices of phones.

EDIT: For me and my job the amount of crap I have had to deal with due to samsung components and their terrible build quality, I kind of have a bias which is what helped in my primary phone being an iphone now while my s7 is what I keep at work for my flir one.

that said, samsung does tend to be a bit more adventurous with the hardware, pushing as much as they can out of the device. That really does work out well for them and they have been doing an amazing job at putting in great camera hardware. Still use my S7 over my X for work photos.
 
something about a phone that cost $1k falling out of my hip holster; just doesn't do it for me. Super duper high priced phones only go to show how important trying to impress people has become for the masses

*Ahem*... I'm sorry but, how the fuck does what you said in any way relevant? What's a failed GPU have ANYTHING to do with a Snapdragon 845 powered cellphone made by a respected manufacturer? Your comparison and the people that liked your post make absolutely no sense.

Apple is going to absolutely crush Samsung this year

Samsung’s flagship smartphone business is set to have its worst year in quite some time. Despite being two of the most impressive smartphones the world has ever seen, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have not been well received by consumers. Reports vary as far as how bad the situation truly is, but the fact that Samsung’s brand new flagship phones saw big price cuts within a month of being released is a very bad sign. It certainly appears as though Apple is the only company capable of releasing smartphones with the same design year after year while still maintaining an astronomical sales pace.
 
Phones are just generic "computers" that only allow you to do what they say you can do, nothing more, nothing less. That is why desktop computers are so much better, you are limited only by how much you want to spend.

Currently running an Oppo R11 and it's the best device I've ever had, I've had everything from iPhone's to Samsung's to Nexus devices. It also cost me a fraction of the price of a comparable iPhone and I was able to expand the default storage of 64GB with a 128GB SD card.

IPhones are simply too expensive with build quality that's really no better than competing products that are cheaper.

I disagree, the iPhone X has the best build quality of any phone I’ve personally used. It’s one of the things that sold me on it.

You didn't read the article. Samsung was hurting till they had to lower the price on their phones a month after release. Which helped the sales. Apple still tops the charts for selling iPhones more than Samsung.

I have no particular brand loyalty. When I am due for a new phone, I shop, read reviews, and go play with display units. However, the last 4 phone purchases I made have all been Samsung phones (Galaxy Epic, Galaxy s3, Note 4...which was my favorite of the bunch...and now the s8+). What may appear to others as being slavish to a brand is in reality, Samsung having the best product available (at least for my needs) at the time of my purchase. I have been tempted by the Pixel 2 (but scared off by the initial display issues), the Essential (scared off due to the company not knowing what the hell they are doing, even if they designed a great phone), and LG.

In these years and years of owning Samsung phones, I really only had one FAIL on me...the Note 4...and I suspect its a software issue. I had call audio cease to work out of the built in speaker...could still use bluetooth to make calls though, or a wired headphone. Rather than mess with it, I was due for an upgrade and the S8+ was calling my name...but that was the ONLY issue I have had with their products in all of the years of use.

If Apple made a TRULY revolutionary phone, I would probably consider one...but I hate being locked into their ecosystem, and I am enjoying products like Chromecast too much to switch over and have to buy all new devices just to listen to music or watch videos. (Especially when said devices are $179 instead of $35 or $79)

Ah I can agree with.

I started in the 'smartphone' era with an iphone 3g, and first into android was my HTC desire HD (which was probably my favorite phone). I guess it does make sense once you already exist within an ecosystem to seamlessly move with it. I never messed with chromecast or the google homes (but hell no I dont have the apple homepods because $$$$).

For me it certainly isnt about status (as some people suggest) I dont even tell people when I get a new phone, not sure it really concerns anyone. I have my S7 at work next to my iphone X and pick the wrong one up constantly cuz they look too similar in black rubber cases because I drop phones all the time. I do miss my status led though lol.

I agree with essential, I was watching them myself as well, but just got nervous about them. Was looking at Huaweii as well as I really like what they are doing but then there was all that drama about not selling in the USA.

Hate going to the apple store though, really feels too much like a smoothie place than a 'tech store'. lol.

Good to see those with open minds though. Like we really shouldnt ever have to 'defend' our purchase right? We all overpay for phones when they used to be free and the battery would last all week (i know i know they do a lot more now).

Just wait though, rumor is apple moving to usb C. They will flaunt that like they invented the standard lol.
