I know a lot of our readers have been very excited about all the 4K G-Sync displays that have been rolling out. Most of these have been right about the $2000 mark. Yeah. That is two thousand US dollars each. If you are thinking about plunking down this kind of cash on a 27" display, which most of you probably are not, you will want to give this guy a listen for 11 minutes. Outside of all the actual display issues, his Acer Predator is too loud. Yeah, his is loud. Using the included VESA mounting bracket cuts off all the airflow that is needed to actively cool the panel. Thanks cageymaru.

Video.

For a two thousand dollar monitor those are all flaws that are unacceptable. The fan was louder than my computer, and I think I have ten fans in my computer.

What complete and utter shit. Go back to R&D and quality control for another 18 months Acer, minimum. The current run needs to be dropped down to $499 msrp too, or noone will ever buy them.

Vega's review. If you don't know who Vega is, then you should visit the Displays subforum once in a while.

He loves it. Says it's the best gaming monitor on the market, and has picture quality rivaling current OLEDs.

l88bastard also has one and has been posting his pics and impressions non-stop.

I blowholed my TV I use as a monitor to make it quiet. (Many Samsung models come with an external "one connect" box)

Maybe it can be water-cooled :p

And wouldn't you know it, my damn Nvidia card isn't displaying the link to the article. They've gone too far this time!

Oh well, who actually reads/watches those anyway.

Just do what I did... buy a Phillips 50" 4K tv and call it a day. Love mine.. love playing games on it. I use my older Sony 47" XBR (1080p) as an additional for watching movies and stuff while I play on the Phillips :), and a 27" Asus and 24" Acer for Web just to keep me occupied WHILE I'm watching movies and playing games (LOL)

This is complete and utter shite! For $2000, I would expect best in class performance, and proper engineering and design! I feel REALLY bad for those who bought into this POS! Hell, for $2199, you can get Samsung's QLED 55" Q8FN with active backlighting, HDR support (which will be FAR better than any HDR monitor currently on the market!) and support for FreeSync...with the ability to display 1080p and 1440p at up to 120hz (4k still limited to 60hz until HDMI 2.1 gets here). This Acer piece needs to die in a fire.

Yea and I'm not a shill.... I could give a flying fuck if this product is successful or not as I have no skin in the game except for my own personal use.

My fan is not loud like that...not at all...so perhaps there is a factory defect on some..ie they forgot to lubricate all of them properly cause they were in a hurry (my Gsync-HDR Sticker was upside down lol) or it got dropped hard in shipping.

Personally, I do not trust that reviewer because:
1) He is obviously German
2) He is starving the electronics airflow with Germanese
3) If its not a BMW or Mercedes then Germans hate it.
4) He has what appears to be an Ultrawide as his primary "keeper" display ahahahahahahahahaha
5) $2,000 is fucking cheap compared to the $2,500 FW900 16 years ago.
6) People all worked up over a fan in a monitor.....have no idea how much bandwidth these suckers are pushing and how hot the FCG's can get....passive cooling could probably cut it, but the fan is "safer"

I trust Strykers vid....but I bet dollars to donuts his was Ace Ventura'd during shipping

Different things are important to different people. The noise that came out of my Samsung JS9000 I use as a monitor probably wouldn't have bothered most people, but it really bothered me a lot. So I chopped it up and cut a blow hole.

it's a feature

I AM NOT A SHILL
lol

HAHAHAHA that fan has better Staccato than my F/A Mac 10!

Yea...I had to cool my Zisworks X39's FCG with an actual fan as the passive cooling solution he worked out was not the best.

Ya a lot of people don't realize quite a few displays have some sort of fan. Especially TV's. The Samsung Ultraclear line had a fan, so did the Dell OLED monitor. While yes, passive cooling is optimal, there is a lot going on in a small space with these new FALD G-Sync monitors. The screen can literally shine 27 inches of 1000 nit at you. The new windows 10 update allows just that, SDR on the desktop up to 1000 nit. That is a LOT of power draw for passive cooling to handle.

Whilst I can hear the fan and mine makes normal/properly working fan noise, I don't think It overrides all of the spectacular qualities of the display. I even find myself more and more using it for gaming over my 2018 C8 OLED, the best display in the world outside of $30K Sony studio OLED's. Gaming at 144 Hz 4K with buttery smooth G-Sync and HDR is quite something special indeed.

Plenty enough people buy $1,000 monitors, I did. But I expect a lot of monitor for my money too. 34" 21:9 Ultrawide at 3440x1440 was enough for me. Now I wouldn't pay $2,000 for a 27" 4K, but I don't get your $500 price point because there isn't anything with a matching set of capabilities at that price point, not with G-Sync. Not unless I am missing one somewhere.

The cheapest I see is the ASUS ROG PG27AQ at about $850.

First of all, this thing could have been absolutely perfect but at $2,000 dollars ...... hell, hell .... 'cough' 'cough' ... hell no.

I'm sure they are planning on producing no more than 2500 to 3000 units. Who in their mind would ever consider something like this.

No sure what him being German has to do with anything ... which, was a bit awkward.

And no, $2,000 isn't cheap. It's the cost of a high-end system damn near. $2.500 professional level monitors are something a medium and especially large corporations can afford. this is a $2,000 monitor marketed at ..... gamers. which is absolutely insane. I'm happy for anyone that buys one, don't get me wrong but that takes a big pair of balls to pull the trigger on. So many other better choices at much lower price points.

And the electronics industry very much has a mob mentality. So all of these companies will come out with similar products at or around the same price point. And this serves .... who? But, I'm not worried. There will never be a world in which this type of fuckery will live or thrive. This is what I would call in the bleeding edge or pc-retardation. And trust me, there have been many products like this over there years. They come and go.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this being ..... 27" ..... jeezus.

Just another random tid-bit of daily PC news. Entertainment. In one ear and out the other for most of us.

It's because it has issues with the display, and a fan problem that is obviously a sign of bad QC. These things will stock the shelves and collect dust, noone is going to put up with that shit at $2k for a 27" display. Those who do buy, will be returning their monitors multiple times to get one that isn't defective. I pulled $499 out of my ass, just something to offset the greatly reduced number of sales, so that some people will buy it who may not care quite as much.

Thanks for your take on the monitor.

I can appreciate that this is one of (if not the) best 27" monitors out there. But I have to agree with the other folks.

Paying 2k for a monitor that at best has shoddy assembly is a huge warning flag for me. (I am still dealing with Microsofts flagship surface book... factory defects that cost "600" bucks to fix after the first year.)

Top it off my last 2 silent builds have gotten me to hate even when my nuc spins up for cooling, so the last thing I want is to toss another fan in the room. (Especially since I find I do much more "office" work on my dell 34 inch ultrawide, another no, no I guess ;-)

Oh well I will "just" have to stay happy with my LG 65" B7A for those hdr moments. Course while we wait even longer for that killer monitor the TV market will keep on evolving.

Side note. The more I read about this product the more I get confused. I thought the crazy money gaming enthusiast all wanted super easy to use large screen with all the bells and whistles for who cares about the price. And the [H] folks all want the best bang for their bucks. I guess monitors are more of niche market since we don't tend to upgrade them with our computers.

I think you are making a great leap about bad QC. How many people own these already to give us a clear look at the numbers to make a claim like that. I own a X34 and it's QC wasn't the best, and it initially cost something like $1500 if I remember correctly. Eventually the QC improved, the price dropped, and I have a decent one for $1,000 and it was my first one, didn't have to return any.

Furthermore there is already competition, I mentioned the ASUS PG27AQ at $850, ACER will have to address that with their own price and there is a third option that is at a similarly high price point. They'll drop soon enough, ACER is just gigging the early adopters because they can.

I find it funny that you say no one will buy them when we have people here on [H] that have already bought them.

Do you think all the people that have already have them, and have issues, are happy campers? They are the early adopters of a niche market, and set the stage for future potential buyers. Having early reviews of the product show such glaring issues is not good for such a high end luxury device few will buy anyway. All I'm saying is a gaming LCD at this price point needs to be damn near flawless, with such heavy competition as you mentioned already present.

This monitor is the epitome of everything that is wrong with overpriced gaming monitors.

What kind of mongoloid would buy this dinky little thing for $2000 when you can get a 55" 4K LG OLED for $1400? Or if you do not care about OLED you could catch a deal on some 75-80 inch monstrosity for this price. Or if you are a cheapskate you could get a great looking 55" TCL 6 series for $650.

This monitor should cost $350, maybe $400 tops. $2000 for 27 inches is absolutely fucking retarded beyond comprehension. And no one other than nerds cares about g-sync, HDR, or the refresh rate.

that ASUS PG27AQ is a 60 hz 4k monitor with no HDR and has been out for over 2 years orso, it has very little to do with these monitors. The similar Asus one is the ROG Swift PG27UQ and is approx 2800 € in my country.

Would've been better with four or more 40mm fans running at low rpm, blowing up across the back, than this. At least you wouldn't have to worry about the visa mount causing problems, and it might even make it sturdier. I doubt if you would need more airflow than that would provide.

This but unironically.

No sane person pays more than about $300-400 for a computer monitor. Most people buy in the sub $300 range.

Size matters more than just about anything to most people. The price of this monitor is really dumb with how cheap gigantic 4K TVs have gotten. Actually the price of all of the G-sync monitors is dumb, but this one is the dumbest. I would be willing to pay maybe a $50-100 premium to get g-sync, but no more than that. At $2000 you would have to be a complete fucking knuckledragger mongoloid to buy this over a big, high-end TV.

You appear to be screwed in the head cuz you can't even wrap your little brain around the fact that other people may want something that you don't want. Seriously how ridiculous to say things like HDR g-sync and high refresh rates are stupid when you're on a goddamn tech forum.

They aren't stupid, they just aren't worth the massive premium companies are charging. You guys who buy these things are getting robbed blind. Tell any normal person you bought a 27 inch screen for 2 grand and they would laugh in your face.

OK...I am going to ask this one last time, because I am seeing it more and more here.

WHAT THE FUCK DO 4k 60hz TV's HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE PRICE OF TEA IN CHINA OR GAMING MONITORS?

You talking about older tech on more mature life cycles....are you aware that the 2015 55" OLED was $8,000 when it came out? EIGHT GRAND DUDE, but now that the tech and consumer base has matured and the cost has dropped down to affordable levels.

They aren't stupid, they just aren't worth the massive premium companies are charging. You guys who buy these things are getting robbed blind. Tell any normal person you bought a 27 inch screen for 2 grand and they would laugh in your face.

I see people walking around with $1,200 mobile phones all the time. Talk about small display.
Also, correct me if I am wrong but wasn't 24"-27" the basic standard size for computer displays until the 30" 2560x1600 dell displays came around? And even then after a decade on the market the 30" was still niche. So why now all of the sudden are people saying 27" for a computer display is small? Because they are comparing them to Television sets....what kind of an idiot compares computer monitors to TVs? Oh wait......

Yes 2000 bucks is certainly a ripoff if you're looking for some kind of value in a 27 inch screen. The problem I have with you is you making ridiculous comments that things like g-sync HDR and more than 60 hertz are only for nerds when you're on a damn tech forum that is full of nerds. This is the very place where things like that are talked about because they actually mean something to people around here and they are quite important to the gaming experience.

What's extra hilarious is that the production runs on these things are so limited that they have unacceptable build quality issues that you would rarely or never see in TVs. Companies like Acer and Asus think you guys are a bunch of chumps. And you are proving them right by buying overpriced stuff like this.

Look I'll buy a g-sync, HDR, high refresh rate monitor at some point, but not at these prices, and not at anything above about $400.

Honestly These displays are never going to gain any market share at these prices. There will be the pro gamer crowd and sponsorships that make it seem like people are using them, but it will be limited to that market. While I'd love to game on one, I wouldn't consider it with all the flaws presented in this videotorial. I'm still going strong on my fw-900 and will probably have to wait another generation or two until there's something that can compete with it on LCD spec.

I have to agree with Cmdrmonkey. Unless you're using a screen for some kind of photo/video production work that generates profit its dumb to spend thousands on a screen, especially for a 27".

I've been wanting to upgrade from my S2716DG/Ultrasharp dual monitor combo for a while. Money isn't really a problem, I avoided the last gen of Acer Predators due to the insane number of RMA stories I saw everywhere. Looks like they doubled down on shit price and shit quality this time around.

In the world of monitors $2000 means I get to demand absolute perfection, the fact these are coming through with back light bleeding even after all these years says quite a lot. The cherry on top of this shit show is the cheap/loud fan that has no intake ports.

Fuck Em'
