Top 3 Slow loading games

1. Ultima Online ___ I spent about a week of time waiting for this game to load up only to have the server crash and reset.

2. Planetside 2 ___ When I picked up a SSD loading times were greatly reduced

3. Hunt Showdown ____ The Hunt Slowdown

Honorable mention

Warface

Most of the first generation Playstation games had terrible loading times. Felt especially bad considering cartridge based systems had next to no load times.

Mortal Kombat on the Sega CD.
For that matter, almost anything on the Sega CD. It's just more noticeable with MK since it loads between every single 1-3 minute match.

The original Resident Evil on PS. (the door opening animation....)

I seem to recall the old PS2 GTA games being pretty rough as well.

The current generation doesn't really understand long load times because they never had to deal with loading a game from tape. ;)
I just remebered the times my Spectrum 48k games sometimes reset the machine @ 99.9% (5-6 minutes) loading and the rage that followed. When I bought a Spectrum 128k +3, the 3" drive was a huge relief :p

Project Gotham Racing 3 on Xbox 360. It would take 2-3 minutes to load into a race. A lot of launch games on the 360 had horrible loading times, but this one was by far the worst.

Are you talking on console? It's pretty fast on PC with a fast SSD.
Or modded. The base game with DLC loads pretty damned quick on my 850 Pro.
Doom 1 on 386. Watching the little dots go across the screen when the game loads.
I've seen videos of Doom running on a 386. I'm glad I didn't have to go through that exercise. I played it on a 66 MHz Pentium. Took about 15-20 seconds to start on a 400MB HDD and played at a glorious capped 35 FPS with maximized window.

I think one of the main things too.. most of the DOS based games loaded very quickly. Used to the near-zero boot up time of DOS compared to MAC or WIN3.1.

Almost forgot.. except for the machines that didn't have a hard drive.. and you would have to swap the disks out depending on what part of the level you were on. The music of the floppy.

I played Kings Quest back in the day but it was my friend's Mom's Tandy if that sounds kinky never got around to playing it enough game was tough.

For it's time, Mask of Eternity on the PC took literally 10-15 minutes to load stages. Loads fine nowadays; SSDs certainly help out a ton!

Unpatched release version of Fallout 2. I used to study for exams between area loads. The patches helped quite a bit, though.

Also, Emperor of the Fading Suns- mostly the time between turns.

Was going to post this also. It's terrible. Sometimes I have to wait for upwards of 3 minutes. Wish I knew how to fix it.

Do you have a lot of mods or something? I use a 1TB spinner for my games and I never noticed FO4 being that slow - maybe 30 seconds load time at most (I don't have it installed anymore to try it). But I just had the vanilla game installed.

Bayonetta on PS2. A game where you can practice and learn your combos while you wait for the level to load haha. It's reproduced on the PC version but you don't have any time to really use it.

Not a lot but about 30. Mostly texture packs and weapon mods

Long loading times can be a symptom of a bad set of mods in Skyrim/Fallout 4.

Giant saves filesizes are another.

Big textures increase loading times of course, but that's not really the issue. It's mods with bad papyrus scripts (or good scripts that malfunction due to unresolved conficts/incompatibility) that really bloat a save, until you hit a point where it won't even load anymore.

Old Skyrim tends to give up and crash in such situations, but Skyrim SE and Fallout 4 seem to be better about powering through and loading bloated saves.

"Skate or die" on cassette (C64)

Lmao, Speed readers really helped with that later on.

Yes kids, 15 minutes to load a game off of a tape casette every time you wanted to play :D

Even floppies we're ridiculously slow, and the drive was a full computer with a 6502.

yeah that game was ridiculous. You load the tape e few minutes til you reach the "skate shop", select event and fucking wind the tape till event and without preknowledge....it was over in 10 seconds flat. Then rewind tape to get to the fucking skateshop again .... lol fond times

It is fond times, I used to really enjoy that game. I think a version of it came out for the NES or maybe Sega Master System at some point later on that I had as well. Now I want to track a copy down. I only have a Vic 20 tucked in the attic these days though =D

Star Citizen is pretty bad. Andromeda is pretty bad, but once its loaded its fine. Loading past the initial load isn't bad at all.

Try GTA Online, it's all loading screens.
I do remember some annoyance with 51/4 floppies, but GTAO is quite bad for it; wait 5-10 minutes for online to load, try to do a heist wait 10-15 minutes for people to join, play once maybe twice, someone quits, then another 5-10 minute wait to load back in, and repeat.

I actually did have a very bad time with GTA Online. My father used to play but didn't want to play in worlds with other people besides me so it was kind of a ritual of loading up the single player game completely so you could then select "invite only" for online play, THEN the insanely long loading period for online to start.

Then the game would crash because it crashed a lot on my 4790k/280x combo.. XD

Andromeda does take a long time to load even with a SSD. I think it's because the game is compiling shaders every time instead of just doing it once and saving them.
