New GeForce long time from now, or maybe not...

NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang says new GeForce "Its a long time from now".

Hopefully nVidia will at least use the extended time to release another leap in performance vs. sitting back and doing just enough to keep the crown.

If there was ever a time for AMD to somehow pull a rabbit out of their hat, now would be the time on the GPU side a bit as they have done on the CPU side of things.

Maybe both AMD and nVidia have re-thought 7nm and HBM on their (gaming cards) road maps with the goal to take this jump in early 2019?

Edit:

Toms hardware seems to think (based upon tweak town and talking AIB partners) July 30th is launch day of nVidia's new cards...

We could see the Founders Edition released at first, just like the GTX 1070/1080 in 2016, with custom cards in the months following. But then we come down to the price. Everything that I've heard about the next card is that it will be: faster than the GTX 1080 Ti more expensive than the GTX 1080 Ti might not be called GTX 1180 and might use different numbers think GTX 1185 or GTX 1190

I'm thinking Q3 since they plan to talk about the next gen mainstream at Hot chips in August.

Of course it's a "long time from now".

If he said "oh, it's coming next month" then word would get around and it could hurt overall sales numbers.

This is how public statements that could affect product sales work. You don't want to get to specific about new, improved product details until you're close enough to release that it won't noticeably hurt sales of your current product line.

Seriously, "a long time" could mean next month, or next quarter, or next year. Your guess is as good as anyone else's, including a newsbot's.

Makes me even more satisfied i returned to consoles after 4-5 years break (Xbox One X)
i can wait it out , no chance i`m buying a 2+ years old GPU , especially after price did not drop since

Well my guess is just a short delay. 1180 in the fall/winter then TI in next year summer. Probably 10% gain over the 1080TI on the 1180 and an additional 10% on the TI version released later. That's the usual nvidia way. If you want a 50%+ gain over a 1080TI you'll have to skip the 1180Ti and wait for the 1280Ti

GTX 980 OC is probably as fast, or slightly faster, than an XboneX (RX 480/580 basically). It's fine if you like to play on consoles, but don't excuse it as if your antiquated gaming PC is holding you back.

Maybe I should pick up the 1080ti with a ICX cooler I wanted....then sell that damn noise heat blowing FE.

GeForce GTX 1180 launching on July 30... right in time for BFGDs and 4K 144Hz gaming displays

I could see this happening, though at that it would seem those with the idea that this is more of refresh than leap in performance are most likely correct.

Wow that site is terrible. It complained I had an adblocker so I tried loading it on a different browser and it just reminded me why I don't disable adblocker, jeez.

Also I like how he was like "I was wrong, but I'm right about this one". OOOOOOO-K, I believe you now!

I keep going back to this post I created many months ago. Im going to hold out till the 1280ti, as I feel 4k 144hz screens will be more common then, and the 1280ti will (hopfully) be the first card to handle 4k/144hz.

My feeling is they're waiting for adequate production of GDDR6
What I'm wondering is, are they actually mining on them right now to "validate" them? I have heard rumors of this happening with other cards. If the Volta cards are good for mining, nVidia could be making some serious bank right now.

There's pent up demand for new GPU's at "reasonable" prices, they would make more money more quickly selling the GPU's to consumers. Then, if they desire, they could mine with new product. I can't think of another reason why they (and AMD) would delay next gen consumer GPU's if not waiting for GDDR6.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane...
1070 was better than 980ti
1080 was ~ 25% better than 1070
1080Ti was ~ 35% better than 1080

Titan V smashes Titan Xp in compute - consider mining hashrate for instance. Titan V is over 100% faster.

If history repeats then

1170 will be better than 1080Ti.

However...
  • 970 was not better than 780 ti
  • 570 was not better than 480
  • 9800 GT was not better than 8800 GTX (this is probably the most analogous jump of the 1080 ti to the 1180 from what I've seen)

Nah

GDDR6 should tip the scales back towards pascals performance tier increases. Though yes, they are inexplicably giving up some bandwidth going back to a 256 bit bus.

They're relying on faster memory (and possibly ability to hit higher core clocks) so they can reduce bus-width i.e. save costs. Remains to be seen if this route is more give than take, however. Another reason to wait for 1180 ti which will likely have a wider bus.

true, if all we look at is performance #'s but what about thermal management , silent operation, etc? I have an EVGA GTX 1080 FTW and in a super quiet room while gaming with game volume OFF I can't hear the fans at all, it's super quiet even under a descent load and I use an open case (ThermalTake Core P3)

There's very little reason for Nvidia to hurry to release a product that will mostly compete against itself. Especially when current GPU's are already being sold at MSRP or slightly above due to miners.

There are definitely quality of life improvements, even the nvidia reference cooler is now competitive with aftermarket coolers in terms of noise (although not performance). That's a huge leap--but the msrp has also been rising, so nothing is free.

Also Nvidia seems to find their new pricing method more profitable. It used to be they would tape out the mid-tier (gaming) die first, then the Titan, then cut down Ti for gaming.

They used to wait until tape outs were economical. Now they go straight for big die first, which is extremely expensive on new nodes, because of demand and money for AI, machine learning, and self driving. And then withhold cheaper dies from the market to milk gamers for everything they got because they have no competition from AMD in that space.

In all fairness, the 570 was an OC'ed 480 with a smaller bus and less VRAM....But it was still Fermi.
The 9800 GT was just an OC'ed 8800 GT and the 9800 GTX was an OC'ed 8800 GTS512. The 9xxx series was a mix of G80/G92, refreshed/rebranded....But still Tesla.
6xx and 7xx was still Kepler.

The 11xx will be a new architecture, and Nvidia usually (cough cough FX cough) doesn't disappoint when they release a new die.

I had both the 970 and 780ti at the same time... and the actual in game performance difference was negligable. However, the lower power draw, slightly higher VRAM, and upgraded architecture made the 970 the keeper of the two and I then sold the 780ti.

Some insight on why Nvidia haven't released new cards. Never really thought about the rule of law.

What a muppet , Nvidia provides new videocards for the professional market every cycle. That whole monopoly analogy is so broken, consumer protection in America , give me a break please.

Talk out of your ass and blame AMD.

I agree... though hopefully if the new guy at AMD puts forth good enough effort we will see a little effort on nVidia's part to release some new gaming cards. I hate to say it, but, we need Intel to do well with their Gaming Card they intend to bring to market in early 2019...

I do think that nV won't be releasing any new consumer cards for a while, but this guy is really grasping at straws on the supply regulatory rational.

I also think there's a lot of blame to spread around for the stagnation, not just or foremost AMD.
