Detroit: Become Human

New vid:

I'm still on the fence about getting it a launch. Seems like good buy at $30-$40 from what I've seen so far and after playing the demo. Not to discredit how much work and talent they've poured into this game; it seems like a good story with high production values so far, but it's still mostly and interactive movie like HR and that's about how I felt HR was worth to me after playing through it several years ago since I didn't feel like replaying through it several times to get all the different scenarios and endings.

I'll prolly wait until after launch for the reviews to determine if I'll get it soon thereafter or not. I have a $50 Best Buy gift card I could use for it too.

IGN's review is out.

As well as Digital Foundry's tech analysis of the game.

If you haven't already, grab the free 20% off code on the live promo going on right now. You just watch a video and redeem the code. There's also another video you can watch to be entered to win a developer designed PS4 system.

https://live.playstation.com/

Looks like it's in the 80's on Metacritic, quite a lot of 90's reviews from critics.

I'm not seeing it on mobile. I was able to do the same thing for a 20% off code 2 months ago on mobile when MLB The Show was launching or something. But even switching to to the desktop site isn't showing me anything for a 20% off code. It already dead?

Working for me. You have to wait for the thing to load once you click on the link, then it'll show some stuff on the right, go to the "Quests" tab to see the two things I mentioned (the PS4 entry and the 20% off code).

I don't mean this in a bad way but that's a pleasant and promising surprise, at least in the early goings.

It's good I think, because Heavy Rain did about the same when it came out, and this is the same sort of game. It's of course got a lot more going for it being a newer game, but it's refreshing to see that people still like this sort of thing years later.

IMO I feel like each of their games takes a general "uptick."

The story was wacked in parts but I felt like Beyond: Two Souls was "better' than Heavy Rain.

I recently played it thanks to my PS Plus membership and got it as a freebie. If that uptick trend holds then that bodes well for this. I liked the demo.

Yeah, finally got it to take after a 3rd attempt of playing the video on my phone. Didn't see anything about the quest, but after playing it again it popped up and said "quest completed." The code doesn't work on pre-orders, but it doesn't expire until May 31st, so I may pick it up this weekend after it launches with the code. I still have to buy a PSN card with my Best Buy Gift card before I can buy it and it looks like I'll have to get a physical card instead of a redeemable code like you can on Amazon.

I got Beyond: Two Souls this month as well with my PS Plus sub, but haven't had time to play it until now since God of War has been out. It seems like an interesting game with really mixed reviews, so I was thinking of playing it next in my queue. But I never got to beat Mad Max from when I got it free too last month because God of War, lol. So contemplating going back to Mad Max before playing Beyond, but now Detroit comes out and looks like it may be worth bumping both of those games for too, hah.

Bought the Digital Deluxe edition today with the 20% off coupon. Looking forward to playing it & exploring everything.

This game has been fantastic so far. I don't know why people are so turned off by QTEs. I mean yeah it's not really "gameplay" per say, but it makes intense cutscenes so much more intense. And it works for interactive movie type games like this. I really like how it bounces between the different storylines. Keeps things fresh. The Kara and Alice storyline is my favorite so far, but all of them have been really good.

I got sucked in last night as well. I thought "I'll fire this up and get past that opening I played in the demo real quick...."

Then two hours went by. ;)

This is what I tell people: If you know what to expect and you're in the mood for it then you will like what these games bring to the table.

So far I'm going to say my hope about the "uptick trend" appears to be happening. This is well thought out... compelling story... good gameplay of "this type"...well paced... and again, it sucked me right in. I can tell this is going to be intense, provocative, and even moving.

I just beat it. Super depressed because I feel like I got one of the worst endings ever. Apparently I suck at decision making because things went south fast.

But holy shit, this game was incredible! I don't typically binge play, but this game had me fully absorbed into its world and I couldn't put it down. Loved it!

I really like these kinds of interactive story games. They're so much more thought provoking than the typical action game.

Now comes the decision... Do I replay in hopes for a better ending or do I just watch the various branches on YouTube?

Just bought it with the 20% off coupon. Only a couple hours into it so far, but I'm liking it pretty well.

I think I might have messed up with Marcus though; I just seemingly killed the old dude's son and got shot, lol.

I tried the demo...the story seems somewhat compelling but the controls and movement in these games just feel terrible to me. Getting the character to do what you want is a tedious chore rather than intriguing gameplay, IMO.

I might pick it up on a sale down the line.

Agreed, I'm pretty blown away by the world. What's scary is how plausible everything is. Very believable for sure. I'm about halfway through going by the number of chapters (saw the list on IGN's walkthrough page), but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. You get a lot out of Quantic's games by being very wary of your surroundings and by thinking 2-3 steps ahead (as you would in real life I suppose). If you just go from area to area and then react, you tend to miss things and leave yourself open to messing up. Granted, messing up isn't really a big deal, but it's satisfying to be on top in every conversation.

Good to hear. Basically, my comment to Q-BZ regarding being wary and all that applies to you, but that being said...

You generally want to try to avoid killing people for the most part. Can you? Sure, you found out that you can. Should you? That's entirely up to you. Killing someone other than a guard or random android isn't really a big deal for the most part, but killing someone close to a semi-major or major character is a big deal, and has repercussions. In these types of games you want to try to always have a handle on the situation, even if it sometimes seems incredibly frustrating, such as when characters shit all over you for being an android, etc. You could technically replay that segment (go to Chapters in the main menu) and go from there, but I'd honestly finish out the story as is, and then replay from there. Markus is a very important character in the game, so your story may be cut short as a result of him dying so early on.

Well I wasn't trying to kill the old guy's son, I thought when it gave me the option to push him when he was attacking me, I would just kinda push him away and not actually kill him, hah. Turns out that I didn't actually get Markus killed though when the cops shot him and he wakes up heavily damaged in a scrap yard of the corpses of other Androids, repairs himself with all the spare parts around, and makes his way out. I'm happy with that and really glad that I didn't make is story end prematurely.

But now I may have gotten Connor killed by chasing Kara and the girl across a highway and getting hit by a car, hah.

Ohh, I've forgotten about that. Yes, you're actually supposed to get shot as you get blamed by the son. Going forwards, if you do die in any way, you don't come back. As far as Connor is concerned, he can't die, his brain just gets moved to another body. Unfortunately, your relationship with Hank get sullied each and every time you die with Connor, as he gets aggravated that he's basically got an immortal partner (and I'm sure you understand his feelings regarding androids in general). You want to make sure Hank lives and that you have good rapport with Frank throughout.

I can tell I'm getting close to the endgame and I'm going to be super sorry when I'm done. This has left an impression with me to be sure. What a ride!

I completely forgot this was coming out now. And I can't see it in stock anywhere locally. I hope I can pick it up later for a bit cheaper.

Good looking game I was wondering how much control you have over your character the entire game.

It left me with an emptiness inside similar to when I finished Life is Strange. The return to real life after an emotional journey such as this sucks.

It's very much a walking simulator. It works well for a cinematic story like this.

I finished my first playthrough and I think I got one of the best endings. Certainly one of the better ones. I think this game is brilliant overall and not to be missed. I'll be processing this one for a while.

How safe is this game for a 13 year old? My daughter like playing choice based adventure games with me, however she doesn’t like shooting guns or tearing heads off in games.

No tearing heads....a few times there's some gunplay that happens and especially near the end of the game.

Sometimes things can get intense with certain situations. Early on there's a... domestic home violence scene (man getting rough with a kid)...that can be upsetting to people. If I were rating this game with movie ratings it's PG-13 for sure.

Anyone that likes choice based games couldn't go wrong with this IMO overall.

I'd add that there's quite a bit of cursing involved, several F-bombs. Also quite a bit in the way of sexual themes. I think PG-13 fits.

If it were a movie it would be rated R for sure. Movies don't allow more than one f-bomb before becoming R. That being said, aside from the f-bombs, there's nothing too graphic about this game. If you consider your 13 year old to be reasonably mature, then I'd say this game is fine for them.

I sold a copy of this game last night to a guy in his late 20s or early 30s I told him I heard it's a good game and the game has cussing :p I had to walk him up front for loss prevention I was just covering a break for someone. He told me if he doesn't like it he's going to sell it at Gamestop but he played Heavy Rain I guess didn't ask him about Until Dawn that would be getting a little too personal.

We still haven't got any copies of God of War 4 since the initial launch.

I think I got one of the better/best endings. Everyone survived best I could tell. (all mains and obvious secondaries to the best of my memory and knowledge. No sacrifices... for the love of God, keep the tickets at the bus station no matter what!) High public approval/sympathy rating...max pacifist... Connor went deviant (became good), etc. etc.

I feel like Quantum set up something potentially more ambitious here for at least one sequel and possibly even past if they played their cards right for these reasons:

1.) The fallout from all of this is a goldmine for potential stories.

2.) Kaminski said all his programming had emergency back doors and they tried it on Connor at the end and it didn't work (because I defeated that). That has serious ramifications. That creepy Amanda goes right along with it.

3.) Do I remember "r89" properly?... maybe I'm dense but I don't feel like we were ever given a clean explanation of exactly what(who?) this is or means? Was it programming byproduct of becoming deviant or something else?

Non-spoiler:
I think Quantic Dreams came forward in a big way on this all told. Last night I fired up Heavy Rain and I didn't last a half hour. I thought it sucked flat out coming off this and I was lukewarm about it back when it first came out. Beyond Two Souls started to change my outlook and this has shifted me firmly into the "positive/support" camp. I'll be very interested to see what's next for Quantic Dreams. Given my points in the spoilers maybe they will even consider some of kind of DLC or expansion for this? I'd be all for it.

I would say that this game isn't about "control" as much as it is about "choice". You can decide to do things or not do things, or have the option to do several different things. But this isn't the sort of game that you control each minute action. Generally you do a button prompt and the character does the action.

If you're looking for an action game or something that takes fine motor skills, this isn't for you. If you have a great interest in story, exploration of this particular future, dystopian, drama, then this will interest you. It's definitely more enjoyable if you're the sort that is more interested in cinematic visuals far more than "doing" things, at least in terms of an action game (for instance, there isn't a "jump" button, if you know what I mean). Great care was put into settings, animation (mocap), and branching paths.

It's a weird thing, but I'll be honest, I kind of mostly think that people on the [H] won't really appreciate this game or most of Quantic Dream's work. As generally PC Master Race wants twitch gaming, multiplayer, team cooperation, and as much murder and mayhem as possible. As much as I wish that Quantic Dream wasn't Sony (PS3/PS4) exclusive, they would probably gain very little marketshare porting to PC. Anyway, enough of my commentary: all this to say, I wouldn't call this an [H] game. This is more about telling a story. So to reiterate, if that sounds like you, then pick it up. If not, then not.

People and androids die on screen, sometimes via execution. There is both "real" and Android blood. Guns do get fired, and Connor one of the main player characters is essentially a detective who tracks down deviants, so any death/crime scenes that are left in their wake you inspect (many of them graphic). If you've played Heavy Rain, it's like that level of graphic, but with even more realistic visuals.
There are prostitutes. As well as plenty of discussion about Android prostitution. Discussions about sex and the spectrum of sexuality. And of course the implications on human society. There is partial nudity, there are however no "sex scenes".
There is drug use, although the drug shown in the game isn't real, it's usage and reactions are plausibly real in comparison with any currently used narcotic.
Plenty of language throughout. The characters are designed to seem like real people.

The themes of the game involve slavery and the issues of having a robotic workforce take over menial labor. So a big portion of the game is exploring those themes. And that happens via some of the things already mentioned as well as things like domestic abuse (physical, verbal), what is sentient life, freedom/oppression, etc.

I probably would give this game a solid Mature/R rating myself just based around the themes and language as well as both the violence and the aftermath of violence, but it's up to you of course as a parent to decide what your child is ready for and what is appropriate for them. I am of course making the game sound dark, which it is, but I would rather you go in eyes open than be surprised down the line.

---

ESRB rate it as Mature/17+ if that helps or is any indication. They also have their descriptor as to why.

ESRB said:
Content Descriptors: Blood, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Drugs
Rating Summary: This is an action game in which players follow the stories of various androids as they interact with humans in a futuristic Detroit. From a third-person perspective, players explore environments, examine crime scenes, and perform tasks while navigating conversations and events with other characters. Some sequences depict characters punching, stabbing, or shooting one another (occasionally seen in slow-motion); characters (including police officers) may also be executed in a handful of scenes. One dramatic sequence involves a man striking a child across the face; players later hear audio of the man beating the child with a belt (the beating is not visually depicted). Homicide scenes sometimes depict human corpses with bloodstained wounds or clothing. The game includes some sexual material and nudity: a sex club containing pole-dancing androids in revealing outfits; a crime scene describing human-android sex (no sexual activity is depicted); an article titled “Android Sex Officially Better!”; posters depicting women in provocative poses barely covering their genitals. During the course of the game, there are several references to a drug called "Red Ice," a fictional version of methamphetamines; one character can be seen smoking the drug from a pipe. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in the dialogue.

Funny you should say that. I felt very differently about Heavy Rain. I think it was probably one of my favorite experiences on PS3. I think I beat it in 2-3 days my first time around. Although I would also say it has much less replay-value. As there are less paths. It feels more like you either shoot for "the best ending" or sucky things happen.

It did have quite a bit of DLC, 2 vignettes completed as I recall. They were planning on continuing and making DLC for several years just based in the world and all its characters. But they stopped. As they wanted to move to future projects and I guess they needed those story writers and developers to move to the next project.

I imagine they have ideas or thoughts about creating DLC for Detroit, but considering the ending are very different, it would probably have to be like HR in the sense that that they would have to take place during the course of the game (from a chronological perspective). I doubt they'll be as ambitious as they wanted to be with HR though.

I finally beat the game last night, and I honestly felt a bit sad at the end. I couldn't get enough of this game, I tried to milk it for as much as I could. I'm very hopeful for DLC or whatever is next for the company. I feel like this universe has a lot of meat left on the bones to be honest.

I ended up getting the "Best" ending, which is basically all important plot characters surviving (not just the main three). You'll know you got the "Best" ending if you get the scene with Hank and Connor after the initial credits. The only way to get the good/best ending is to go full on pacifist and having that high public opinion, there's just no other way. Connor definitely has to go deviant as well, it just makes sense. I'll probably replay a few more of the chapters to see some of the other outcomes.

Agreed totally on #1, and for #2, that was icing on the cake to be honest. The fact that the androids are able to break through and become their own beings so to speak is so powerful. I was so happy to see Connor breaking through the end there when talking to Markus.

#3 wise, I'd say that it's more of a "God" or belief that the androids came up with in order to feel more like humans. Something to cling on to in desperate times. Additionally, you could argue that it's the backdoor that allows an android to finally break free and become human, so to speak. The reason why I think it's basically both of these is that ra9 existed before Markus became a deviant. I think it goes a bit deeper than that though, if you think about religion in general. People were waiting for this one messiah to appear, and then he does, almost as if he were destined to be the answer. Alternatively, perhaps ra9 was just the first android to gain consciousness, which you could argue is Kara. To muddy things up a bit more, check this video out (set 10 years before the events in the game):

Hey, what did you end up choosing at the main menu after the game ended, with Chloe? That was really interesting. Definitely the best menu in a game, for sure with how she converses with you and asks you questions you can actually answer.

The more I think about it... yeah, R mature rating.

Agreed.

How many hours is this game?

Roughly 8-10 or so. You could easily double it if you replay the game again and choose different outcomes. There's quite a bit of replayability for sure, the flowcharts are quite extensive.

If you replay it does the flowchart display your previous choices?

Picked this up the other day, finally had a chance to play it last night. Game looks fantastic, having a blast.
