Certainly most every person that reads this meager news feed can easily picture the Millennium Falcon in their mind's eye right now, but what about all the versions that we never will get to see on the big screen? StarWars.com has a story about looking back in time with the Falcon, which of course is there to prop up the floundering Han Solo film, but it is still really cool to see.

Clyne, Lucasfilm’s design supervisor for Solo: A Star Wars Story, and his team ultimately created about 60 iterations of the fastest ship in the galaxy before landing on the design that’s featured in the new film, out now. The process took Clyne back to his childhood and essentially transported the entire crew back to the 1970s to explore muscle car culture, model building, and the original concept art that inspired the creators of Star Wars in 1977.

First, Solo was awesome, you should all see it, the movie reinvigorated my adoration of SW and was all TLJ wasn't. Felt very EU in everything they did, the lore building was excellent and really fun! Second, all they did to design the new Falcon was use McQuarries originals. Simple as that.

I built a Millenium Falcon, won 3rd in the state fair. It was fuckin awesome. I painted a flashlight bulb blue, got some c batteries and shoved it behind the plastic cover to simulate the engines glow, even painted asteroid hits and laser blasts on it like Dykstra. I have none of that stuff now, prolly got sold off in a garage sale along the way.

The irony I find in this is that in the prequels you see the Falcon as is. George Lucas intended for the Millennium Falcon to be very old, and as is. A newer sleeker version technically shouldn't exist except possibly prior to the prequels.

Everyone of my Star Wars friends happened to enjoy Solo. Not quite sure why the hate. Good story, plenty of action, believable characters, and a shit ton less plot holes than TLJ.
I rank it higher than Rogue One, The Phantom Menace, Return of the Jedi, The Last Jedi and Attack of the Clones. Not that besting those stinkers means much but for a Star Wars story it melds in quite well.

Wasn’t the falcon supposed to be a sleeper? Wasn’t it all souped up for special operations by the empire or something? In the books...

I like Solo more than Rogue One (which I thoroughly enjoyed), which I like quite a bit more than either episodes 7 or 8, both of which are miles better than 1-3.

We've rewatched Rogue One and the original trilogy this week after seeing Solo and I feel like of the 5 (Solo, Rogue One, original trilogy) the weakest for me is Episode V (Empire Strikes Back). It's important for getting from 4 to 6, but it's just so slow and drawn out for the most part.

I'm happy to see the designers not take too much away from the original Millennium Falcon design and only tastefully add to the already sleek design. Per the sketches in the article:

#10 looks like they tried to meld a speeder bike into the design and it looks stupid.

#12 resembles a hammerhead shark. I don't like it as it detracts too much from the original design but it does look rather cool.

#13 appears to have ping-pong ball barrels on it. Dapuk?

#20 looks to be a cross between the MF and a Tie Fighter which looks totally wrong.

#24 is a facepalm 'WTF were they thinking?' design. Jeebus that thing looks hideous.

#27 looks like it has a dildo welded on to the front.

For the best explanation of what the Falcon originally was, read the book "Millennium Falcon",

It has quite a colorful past. Shortly after the shot where you see it landing on Corosant in the last prequel, it leaves on a mission where it crashes when it exits hyperspace, because it comes out right on top of another large ship. According to the book it has been totally rebuilt from scratch several times after being nearly destroyed. It also came from the factory as just a saucer without any of the attachments on the front. At one time it was a traveling zoo, which was a funny story about it. If they had kept that part of the EU in tact, it would have already looked quite worn by the time Lando owned it.

I am still waiting to see the Solo movie, just have to get some time away from work. :)

The pic with the flames reminds me of one of the point jobs you could select for the YT1300 freighter you could own in Star Wars Galaxies, they also had one similar to the firebird emblem, but it looked closer to the rebel symbol yet bird like.

I refuse to watch Solo despite being a enormous Star Wars nerd. The pansexual Lando bullshit and the robot fighting for rights that are never explained. Kathleen Kennedy, Disney, and the political preaching are fucking killing Star Wars. The Last Jedi was the worst Star Wars movie i've ever seen if not the worst movie I saw last year.

If you are a "huge" SW nerd, you'll watch it, in hopes they make a second one. The pansexual thing with Lando has always been a bit, read some of the EU books (ok it's not sexual but it's a heavy relationship), he's hugely into droids. He spends I don't know how long on this alien vessel with Lobot, R2 and C3PO in one of them, almost kills 3PO. I mean, wouldn't we all. I get it, and didn't take it to heart too much, hell look at the world we're in now. The droids rights thing is also a play on 3PO from the EU, he starts a droid uprising in a few books, it's hilarious. I completely agree with on the last point, TLJ is absolutely the worst star wars movie made. You are supposed to go into it expecting romance, excitement and adventure. Leaving, with HOPE. What did we get? A smelly old teet milking hobo who can't even muster up enough courage to show up IN THE FLESH to his nephews downfall, which he created. This coming from the ONE. Who was supposed to bring (well Anakin, but it was really Luke) balance. Now some girl with no ties to anything who can magically - yeah it's star wars so what - out fight anything in her way saves the galaxy. And yet, it seems like no one knows it, or her. IDK man, TFA wasn't the best SW movie, but it was fun, and it led us toward something, and left on a cliffhanger with some hope that things might get better. The second one yeah, is supposed to kind of squash that, but it wasn't fun at all. The whole movie was depressing. Who wants to walk out of a theater going...well, I "think" it was good, I guess, but damn am I sad and don't really care what happens next. Solo, not at all. You totally want to find out what happens to Qi'Ra, and WTF is Darth Maul doing as a Gangsta. Does Han see her again? Do they meet up with Jabba immediately or is there a time jump? What other crap to they get themselves into?!

It was not awesome. I struggled to pay attention, zero emotional involvement. My theater was almost entirely empty; they sold more tickets to Deadpool,

With that being said, I will watch it 1 or 2 more times before I pass final judgement. As just a movie it wasn't bad, but right now I see it as easily the least entertaining SW movie. Every time I see a fucking star destroyer in the clouds I want to mail my poop to someone at Disney.

Droids fighting for their rights was an ongoing thing in the EU just google “the great droid rebellion”.

Everything shown in the movie is Lando's doing (his own words), and Lando also admits winning the ship from a previous owner which correlates with all previous legends and canon star wars material. Every single one of Lando's exterior mods gets stripped off by the end of the movie. This includes the extra paint, extra armor panels, both crappy single blaster turrets, the low profile dish, and even Lando's super secret custom built "escape pod" he built into the nose. Simply put, this space yacht version of the Falcon is retconned by Han's piloting in one outrageous space chase scene.

The movie isn't amazing, but all of this is overblown. It's got its problems, but these aren't the problems people should be looking for. ;)

There is no pansexual Lando at all. There is one joke between the butch lesbian droid and Han's former girlfriend. Lando and the droid are just close friends like Luke and R2 were.

Star Wars has always had an in-universe slavery issue, and even very self aware droids that knew they were slaves. There is also a mention of the Great Droid Revolt in a now legends comic from 1994. There have been female droid personalities for a while too. Granted, this is the first time I've seen an obvious butch droid, but in a universe of millions of alien species I can't even give a single fuck.

You see the droid for all of 30 minutes, and her little bullshit stunts end up being the comedy relief as she starts a droid revolt and promptly gets blown up herself.

Don't watch it in theaters if you don't want to. It's definitely not the best movie or as good as Rogue One was. But don't completely dismiss it either.

Everything from the "expanded universe" has been redacted and is no longer canon.

Those two things took up maybe 30 seconds of screen time, just cover your eyes and ears if you're that sensitive.

I liked #12 if you imagine the add-on as a cargo pod. The Falcon as seen in the movies is little more then a well armed pleasure yacht with a few small hiding places for special cargo.

Not sure why some folks are having such an issue with Lando's possible interest in a fem bot considering how quickly us current era humans are creating sex bots.

You're completely missing the point. Disney is literally killing everything we've loved and grew up with in Star Wars. Kathleen Kennedy is a fucking bitch as is JJ and Rian Johnson don't give a shit about the fans. The amount of bullshit being pushed by Kennedy and the direction they're taking with Star Wars should be pissing every fan off.

This person summarized it really well:

"The Pareto Principle states that 20% of the customers provide 80% of the sales. This is why alienating the hardcore fans was straight up incompetence, resulting in severe damage to the value of the Star Wars asset. "

Makes a nice article but the pessimist in me thinks the conversation went like this: We need to have a new toy to sell but how do we not get soaked on a huge redo in tool/die and packaging setup? Oh lets tack a nosecone on. Call the writer he needs to add one throwaway line about the escape pod in the script.

Do you have a sign infront of your house that says 'I need a safespace so Get Off My Lawn'?

Robot rights have been an undercurrent topic in Star Wars since 'A New Hope'

You can watch the movie and never even question anyones sexuality. But lets be real, in a universe with such a diverse set of inhabitants, of course Pansexuality would be a thing. Twi'Leks have been in several games as adult entertainers and, Leia was turned into an object of sexual desire in Return of The Jedi, and don't tell me that was just because Boba Fett was around, you know Jabba and Salacious B. Crumb were all about that metal bikini.

Being a fan doesn't mean accepting or subsidizing any piece of crap they pinch off and label Star Wars. That's basically a Slim Pickens in Dr. Strange Love Move right there. In fact if fan disenfranchisement had settled in sooner, we'd be over the Kathleen Kennedy era sooner. Instead the property faces a global extinction event.

People who attach polictical agendas to fictional movies get what they deserve.

I think Ron Howard did a superb job with Solo. I am not crazy about the casting for Han, but the rest were well done and the overall experience was fun. Just a fun movie.

Agreed. Check your fucking politics and cynicism at the theater door. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, but America has a giant stick up its ass.

Not all of us do. The stick tends to make those folks scream louder and longer than those of us who are happy folks. :)

The sad thing here is after 40 years no one has come up with a franchise as epic as SW. Why is that, seriously. Instead di$$ney morphed a treasured mythology and dumped a bunch of modern culture into it and it is so obvious you can smell it whenever you get close to it. Its just not the same anymore and neither is the audience. The thing they can't seem to figure out is sw is about the well established characters at this point, not political opinions, social issues, awkward moments and unrealistic happenstances. Things younger audiences 'SEEM' so intent on.

SW was so unbelievably fukin awesome because ordinary dudes havin some drinks in a bar jumped in the Millenium Falcon and went into hyperspace. Light Sabers and the Jedi mythology wasn't bad either. In hindsight SW should have ended with ROTJ.

Also I must say with moves like Lando has he wouldn't be fucking robots, sorry.

In hindsight SW should have ended with ROTJ.
Should have ended before that. Empire was the last one I really liked. To this day I still lament the unmitigated cuteness of those Ewoks, and the cultural turn in the franchise they represented.

I will say, after what JJ said about snoke and Rey during making the force awakens, and then seeing the last Jedi completely reverse course, I could easily see it was a 'fuck you' to star wars fans by a douche director who thought he was more clever than he actually was.

The lines from kylo about wanting to burn everything down and starting over I felt were coming from Rian himself.

Rather than be a good Steward of the ip he was allowed to play in, he instead took a shit on it, and then rubbed fans' noses in it.

I hope JJ reverses course on some things in ep 9. Just because kylo said Rey's parents are no one, doesn't mean he was telling the truth.

What if those people are the director and actors themselves?

That was the case with Solo.

No one wants to go to a movie to be preached at. It's supposed to be escapism. Even if the movie is benign, if the actors and director are in the public eye and MAKING it political, a person can't go see the show without that in the back of your mind.

One thing I've learned: one side of the political arena LOVES to "project".

America as a whole doesn't have a stick up it's ass. Some internet loudmouths have a stick up their asses because Americans as a whole are rejecting having the loudmouths' politics injected into just about every form of entertainment and are finally voting with their wallets...

I'm pretty much sure they were. The irony is if they had run that idea to ground, they would have had something interesting story-wise which would have redeamed the cluster-F of a movie. But turns out that scene was only a setup for Rian to spell out what he was doing. The reason I know they never meant it as part of the story, KK & RJ's ideology would never allow people coming to peace or compromise with the enemy.

To me, I think they can still redeem some parts of the movie by making Luke a force ghost in the next, but in a twist, attach him to Kylo, like a sort of taunting conscious Ben never wanted.

Solo was ok. I don't want to plot spoil it but anyways I thought some parts could have been done better. Basically everything with Lando and Lando's robot was kinda meh. Emilia Clarke's role felt very unexplored. They kept alluding to things but explained nothing. Maybe it was supposed to build anticipation, I just thought it was a waste of a character. Didn't like the ending much either. It was an enjoyable enough movie and I'd watch it again.

Really liked Rogue One but thought it need more character development.

Liked the force awakens. I was disappointed they made it another blow up the death star movie. Poe's character bugs me because they make him way to good at flying an x-wing. We've got plenty of movies setting precedent and then he's just flipping around doing stuff that just doesn't fit.

The last Jedi is worst star wars movie ever in my opinion. There's so much wrong with it I don't enjoy it at all. Even the phantom menace was enjoyable the first few times. I came home from the the Last Jedi and couldn't believe it. End to end garbage. A couple funny moments and a couple 'neat' scenes, decent effects. I liked the Rey/Kylo scene other than that Snoke was the most meaningless villian ever. I sort of liked the Astral Projection scene with them attacking Luke. Pretty much was indifferent or hated every other scene.

But I guess my least favorite scenes... The bombers looked like they were using gravity to drop bombs in space. The space fights were totally lame, not enough ships, nothing blowing up. The vegas vacation was completely stupid. Poe single handedly takes out all their defenses. Poe rebels to try and save the fleet because for some reason the rebels decided to not share their plans with the crew. Every other movie they share the plan. But this time they don't and it gets lots of people killed. The hyper-drive weapon thing, while somewhat logical, doesn't make sense to introduce now. And why couldn't a droid or the computer auto-pilot the ship. Admiral Ackbar get's killed and doesn't even get to say anything. The chase was boring as hell. Seriously... they should have done it like in the battlestar galactica reboot. That's a space chase done properly.

All your choice.

If you want to project some external opinions on a fictional piece of work, well, that is your doing. I am pretty sure if you tried hard enough, you could tie politics to any movie or television show ever made.

Like I said, you get what you deserve. Meanwhile, I'll keep enjoying entertainment for what it is.

EDIT: By the way. There has never been a creative work which did not partially or wholly reflect the creative mind(s) behind it. Whether you chose to enjoy the sum of the work is up to the individual.

Sorry, but you are being disingenuous and deliberately obtuse...

When I read Clyne state he never knew what the front mandibles (or the gap) is for on the falcon, even 40 years later, it's like they never read any official star wars books. This guy is redesigning it and doesn't know there are weapons in that gap. Fucks sake, the state of this faggotry. Made by outsiders, for social justice virtue signalling.

The movie isn't just bombing in the United States man, it's bombing world wide. Fans the world over are saying that the movie sucks. In The Last Jedi Rey is a Mary Sue, she hardly knows anything about The Force and she's mastered the light saber. Bullshit man! And then you have the Leia being sucked out into space and she somehow lives? What? Is she like Superman here? Again... bullshit. Oh and then you have this bullshit.

OMFG!!! Seriously? This is identity politics at it's fucking worst!!!

Star Wars was never meant to be like this.
