delided 8700k, 240AIO cooler not enough for 5ghz?? Stuck at 4.8ghz

Hi all.

Built a new combo other day.

Asrock X370 Gaming K6
8700k delided(CLU TIM die to HS)
Artic cooling 240 AIO cooler. About 1.5yrs old. Used on 6700k/7700k builds.
Thermaltake 750W gold PSU
1080TI FE
2x16gb Gskill PC3000@PC3200oc.

So temps seem ok when starting stress tests like prime. Will be mid 50-60's. However, after about 15 minutes it seems the temps just keep creeping up. Figure the little AIO may be heat soaking? I've cranked fans to 100% but they don't seem to move much even at full. Temps with prime will eventually get into the 80's C.

4.8ghz seems stable at 1.335v. 5ghz isn't stable AVX. AVX offset of 2 at 5ghz will reboot as well. Even at up to 1.375v which the temp issue just gets worse from there and all I'll go until I possibly get better cooling.

Wondering if #1 there are any other settings needed in bios to hit the magic 5ghz. Seems everyone is getting 5ghz with 7700k and 8700k's but mine top out at 4.8ghz(my 7700k did too). I have VCCIO and VCCSA adjusted for my ram oc. No other voltages other than ram at 1.365v set. Everything else is on auto.

First off you need to keep in mind the silicon lotto, just because it is a 8700k does not guarantee 5GHz, I infact have a 2600k that is stuck on 3.9GHz with out insane Vcore. Speaking of Vcore, i have read that you dont want to be above 1.35v for 24/7 usage, there is even people being extra cautious and staying away form 1.3v for 24/7 use to stave off electron degradation, anyway what I'm saying is i would stay away form the high voltages if at all possible but your use case is not the same as mine and if you just want the maximum possible speeds and your just going to upgrade in 6 months anyway then push it all you can then all the power to you.

As for cooling, you might want to go up to a 360 AIO with a high end pump (the pump flow can make a big difference in cooling effectiveness) and some good fans and that should hopfully keep your CPU cooler and might improve your overclock potential, it will certainly alow you to push more Vcore before hitting 80-90oc, there is also some air coolers that might do the trick to but they would have to be huge heat pipe monstrosities something like the Cooler Master V10 (Discontinued) with it's hybrid TEC technology (i used this cooler and it was very effective)

As long as it is mostly the same to overclocking a sandybriged CPU you will need to disable Spread Spectrum, turn your load line calibration to high/higher setting (Be careful with this one, it basically is allowing you to choose the degree at witch you Vcore will be bumped over you setting to help your CPU in heavy tasks, overdoing it can give you CPU to much Vcore) up you phase control to high/extreme, also if you still cant achieve you 5GHz OC you can try lowering your memory speed, i might help but will hurt system memory performance some also turning off Hyper Threading can help you get a high clock but once again you need to weight the gains with the losses and turning of Hyper threading will lead to some losses.

Now I don't have a 8th gen System to mess about my self so some one who has more knowledge of overclocking a 8th gen CPU will more then likely be better suited on the finer points of overclocking it but the fundamentals remain the same, keep it cool and if you want it to last longer then 6 months/a year you need to be sparing with the voltages and maximum temps and in your case i think a superior cooling solution might give you the head room your looking for but if nothing just remember we all play the lotto when it comes to over clocking and be it intel or AMD just because it has a X or a K on the end doesn't always guarantee your going to hit the magic number.

Hopefully some of what is said here is somwhat useful to you and I'm not just repeating things you already knew, either way good luck.
 
I've got a delidded 8700K with the Arctic Liquid Freezer 240 (using, IIRC, MX-4 paste between the 8700K and the Arctic CPU block) and I run at 5 Ghz on an Asrock Z370 Taichi. I think I've got voltage at 1.35 or 1.36 and I believe I have LLC at level 3, but I need to double-check. As Kato said, the Silicon Lottery could be coming into play - your temps are quite a bit higher than mine as even on stress tests, I am in the low 70s at most with some cores not even breaking 70. I'm about to run out for the evening, but if you have specific questions on my settings, I can take a look when I get home tonight or tomorrow morning and let you know. Is your Arctic making good contact with the CPU?
 
thx IndyColtsFan. Are you AVX stable at 5ghz or using AVX offset? BTW on OCCT I max at 75C on spikes, but generally run in the lower 60's C even after an hour. Prime just rapes this CPU AVX or non AVX.

Yeah I've checked contact and reapplied tim between cpu and aio. I'm using MX-4 between cpu and aio as well.

I may have to reconsider if my TIM CLU application between die and IHS is sufficient. Although, I want to say it's ok. Temps seem to start off pretty good, and tbh I never ran this cpu w/out delid. But my old 6700/7700k before delid would immediately spike to 70+C and climb rapidly into the 80's plus when they were pushed into the 4.6-4.8ghz range. So I'm assuming this one is at least a decent TIM application of the CLU on the die?????

Yeah it could be silicon lottery, I do have that sort of luck.

I just wonder if it's doing 4.8ghz AVX stable at 1.335 set in bios. I'd think it should be able to do non AVX at 5ghz(from everything I've read etc...), but even bumping voltage doesn't help.
 
BTW. When I've seen temps go higher 70's to 80's on stress testing. It's when prime is pulling some major crunching and cpu core reports cpu watts at 200-230 :O
 
Try another AIO if you can, 1.5y maybe getting some residue in the block area. Did you check the contact after delid?
 
I rechecked contact from AIO to IHS.

I do not usually take off the IHS after applying CLU TIM from core to IHS. I don't like handling the core much and get paranoid I'm doing to damage it. So I just put a small layer of CLU and call it good.

Think I should tear it down and recheck? I can say from experience with my 6700k/7700k delidding. They would pre delid, spike fast to higher temps then this current cpu will. So I think my TIM application is ok, but who knows?

I believe I have a -2 AVX offset if I am not mistaken; I can hit 4.9 GHz with no offset. I actually bought the CPU and then sent it to Silicon Lottery and had them delid and rate the CPU; they were able to hit 5.1 GHz at 1.4 with a -2 AVX offset.

Even with Prime 95, I am in the low 70s max after an hour+ run. I think I got pretty lucky with my chip since I got an early one from Newegg.

update: I was able to knock about another 5C off those "heat soak" load temps by messing with the custom fan settings for my 2x120 AIO fans. Set them much more aggressive and they are still very quiet IMO though even at full. Anyway, that helped a little.

So, are you using 2 or 4 fans on your radiator? I’m using 4.
 
I'm using 2 on bottom, and way I have it setup, there are also 2x200mm fans on top of case helping to extract heat from area.
 
I never tried underclocking ram. I did initially oc cpu with ram left at default 3000 specs though. Hit the same wall.
 
Check your Vcore and ideally, power out of the wall as you stress test. I had an 8700K near release day and the motherboard firmware was pretty broken; regardless of what voltage was set in the BIOS, once the CPU hit a certain temperature the voltage would jump up, resulting in a 50% jump in power out of the wall and consequent thermal runaway.
 
I don’t see a real world benefit in chasing magic 5 GHz other than to satisfy OCD. Hell, if you’re using it just for gaming, you won’t see any major fps increase compared to older 6700k/7700k. Your problem is silicone lottery. It’s the same story as with my 6700k. It just refuses to be stable at 4.6 on air at voltage below 1.360 (worked on water at 1.344 though), but is rock solid at [email protected]. Pretty huge difference between mere 100 Hz. And I’m not even sure it won’t be crashing at [email protected]. Just the chip and its ceiling.

Agreed. Just use that AVX offset wisely and use a non-avx bench to get something stable. I'd be 100% fine getting high 70s/low 80s as my peak temps. You can always check your latency if you think the temp is causing throttling/latency.
 
People are still chasing blue skies. When the average overclock on the 8700k is only 4.9, that doesn't mean you'll all reach that Nirvana.

Be satisfied with 4.7. It's a 10% overclcok from 4.3 all-core turbo.

Yeah when you look at silicon lottery and they basically test them @ 1.4V with an AVX of -2. 88% can reach 5ghz at that voltage isn't too surprising.
