The worst kind of hack you can have is the one you don't know you have, until the hackers contact you and tell you, you have been hacked. This seems to be exactly what has happened with the Bank of Montreal and Canadian Imperial Bank.

Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO), Canada’s fourth biggest lender, said on Monday it was contacted by fraudsters on Sunday who claimed they were in possession of the personal and financial information of a limited number of the bank’s customers.

A spokesman for the bank said it believed that less than 50,000 of the bank’s 8 million customers across Canada were hacked. He declined to say if any customers lost money as a result of the attack.

Lol, the PR spin on that. I highly doubt the hackers said "hey, we have a limited number of your customers data."

Most likely they handed over 50k of them as proof.

According to news reports, the hackers sent a letter to various media outlets saying they were going to sell the info if the banks in question did not cough up $1 million. They included the details of 2 customers at the end of the letter including names, dates of birth, SIN and account balances. When contacted by the CBC, one of the customers confirmed the information to be accurate.

After 22 years I left TD for a locally owned credit union and it was the best move I ever made. TD didn't even apologize for their screwup or thank me for my business when I left ... just indifference and attitude.
