“The Expanse” Picked Up by Amazon for Season 4 after Syfy Cancellation

It would have been a damned shame had this show been cancelled. It's the best sci-fi in a long time, terrifically written and acted, and some of the most engaging TV out there right now.

People compare it to GoT, but it's far more mature and cerebral, and echews the purial nonsense and fantasy hokieness.

It makes no sense to me why SyFy cancelled the show. These cool original shows are why I watch SyFy. If they don't have those types of shows and just play reruns, I'm not tuning in.

Guess that's a benefit of being a Billionaires favorite tv show. Fuck you money well spent in this case.

This show makes Battlestar Galactica seem like a show for 15 year olds, Star Trek for 10 year old, and Star Wars for 5 year olds.

Star Trek is iconic. Starships, warp drive, transporters, phasers, communicators, time travel, mirror universe, extraterrestrial life, advanced civilizations, war and peace, alien first contact, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, etc. The episode from the second season, "The Ultimate Computer", profoundly prescient and a very real issue or our time. As a kid in elementary school in the 1970s, Star Trek reruns sparked my interest in computers. I'm an old fart turning 50 in a few days and Star Trek is up there with me. Star Trek is not a well written epic, it's premise was "Wagon Train in space." But the combination of its vision or real world issues especially concerning technology and optimism is unique and inspirational.

I never read the books but I do very much like "The Expanse" series. But it's no Star Trek.

Sure, you could live underground and wear protective suits above. But then why settle there over anywhere else in the Solar System? Would self sufficiency or profit even be possible?

Because not only is it the closest to Earth (technically Venus is a little closer), but it is the most hospitable body in the solar system other than Earth and the moon.

I read the books (actually, listened, got the audiobooks) while waiting for this season to start and found them very entertaining. At least if the show ended, we had the source material. I was so waiting to see what they did with the belter who was the first to shoot the ring and I was not disappointed.

Does anyone else think the actor portaying Amos is totally nailing it?

Having not read the books I think most of them are nailing it. It is currently the best show on television. And, dare I say it. Better than Firefly. Might even reach Babylon 5 in time :)

Wes Chatham actually read the novels- before the project was announced and before he auditioned for the role. He was a fan of The Expanse and Amos Burton before it was even a thing. I'm not sure if that additional insight is what makes the Amos Burton so good, but every Roci crewmember is tortured by their past- and it shows the most in Chatham's performance

It's because space sci-fi fans can't be painted with the same brush. I couldn't stand any of Stargate shows. I feel that Firefly was grossly over-rated. I once loved Babylon 5 but despise it now. I can't bear any of the Clone Wars or Rebel cartoons. I think Deep Space Nine, Battlestar and The Man in the High Castle were the pinnacles of sci-fi TV before The Expanse came along. And I still think The Orville is a confused, nostalgic, annoying yet endearing show. (just like Star Trek Discovery)

But I also feel the reason a lot don't get The Expanse is that it's plausible. The show spends a lot of effort trying to get the science right- and that heart is simply lost on the lightsaber/warp drive crowd.
I must be really weird then... lmao
Love Stargate.
Love Firefly.
Never watched Babylon 5 (was during a period of my life where I... well, had a life aha)
Love Clone Wars and Rebels
Quite enjoyed Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, and TNG (not a fan of TOS), though I haven't watched Discovery.
Love BSG, and Caprica, and that Blood & Chrome movie (wished it had gotten a series).
Really enjoy The Orville, but not for the same reasons as the above shows, just for the fact it's a Comedy in Space.
(I live in a rural area and am limited to Cellular or Satellite internet, so as such, I do not have Netflix or Amazon Video, and I've not seen The Man in the High Castle, though I've heard of it and given I like WWII, would like to have been able to see it.]

I'm also of the old school, pre-Special Edition crowd of Star Wars fans, am not fond of EP 7, quite dislike EP 8, though I loved Rogue One and I'm hoping Solo doesn't suck.

What I really enjoy with The Expanse is the fact it has the science right, and is a drama with action. I love sci-fi for the science element, and so that's why I am drawn to the shows that focus on the Science. Alas, I also love content that take creative liberty with Science, like Star Wars, injecting just enough fantasy to fill in the blanks of "we just don't know enough about the universe to completely rule the plausibility of this out". Though I do like Doctor Who, which is rather heavy on the Fantasy, and generally (IMO) light on the Science :p

I've been interested in this one but went for The 100 instead. Once I am done with that (which I do like for all its faults) I will be watching The Expanse.

Does Amazon do it the Netflix way where they release all episodes of a season day 1 or do we have to wait 3 or so months for all the episodes to come out? I hate that crap. I prefer to watch 2-3 episodes a night if possible back to back.

Season 3 is technically premiering 1 episode at a time on Amazon, but it's not under the Prime umbrella yet, so you have to buy the episodes to watch them (or maybe have a SyFy subscription?).

Amazon will probably drop season 3 and (eventually) season 4 on Prime all at once, like you want.
