Samsung is rolling the dice this weekend in the UK to see how many people is can truly piss off in the shortest amount of time in an attempt to advertise its new Ambient Mode. The point of Ambient Mode is to have your TV blend into its surroundings, instead of just leaving a big dark rectangle on your wall when not in use. Countdown till how long this is used for advertising other Samsung modes? 3...2....1.

Millions of TV sets across the UK will appear to turn themselves off this weekend as part of a world-first marketing campaign for electronics giant Samsung which aims to showcase the evolution of television and its role within our homes. Screens will buzz with static and interference before going blank and entirely silent, leaving viewers staring into the void – or searching for their remote controls – for six long seconds. The darkness ends with text emerging, which reads: “This is your TV screen … most of the time; a void full of nothing.” It then explains the virtues of Samsung QLED technology which has an ‘Ambient Mode’ meaning viewers need never see a blank screen again.

That shit starts happening and me and samsung will be getting a divorce.

By divorce, I mean a kick in the face.

And by face

I mean nuts.

Fo’s likely to get smoked doin dat shit

Never EVER get between a man and his 4k tv.

Hopefully, this will only be for tv’s that have a built in camera ?

I so fukin hope so < will prove my buying decision to be correctomundo, i think. If it is just tv’s with cameras, then it sure as fuk wont be millions of tv’s that will do it, we speaking possible hundreds of thousands at best.

Still, fuck samsung.

so tired of all this non-sense marketing bullshit like this...I want to buy a product and use it when I want, and however I want. I do not want a rigged iPhone that limits my features with updates later down the road. I dont want a TV that slows down as updates pile on to force me to buy the latest. I certainly do not want to start paying extra for experiences I do not want.

Lol, its only 2018 tvs

50k folk will see this, at best and if it happens on a saturday between 12-17:00, probably only 4 will see it.

Too much drama for too little bullshit.

Still, if this is the sign of things to come, I will go get my 5000 lb panasonic crt tv.

To this day, it still rapes ALL other led tv’s when it comes to picture quality of a standard definition signal.

SD picture turned to shit on led tv’s. I would be quite happy if I had to go back to the future and only had my old panny crt tv to watch vcd porn movies, high def makes porn horrible to watch. Seeing their pores and blemishes n shit, no thanks.

SD porn, nothing can beat it.

See what I did there ?

That's what you get for buying into the smart tv crap. The marketeers won again.

It's just an advert with a blank screen and no sound for a few seconds, nothing nefarious.

I'd be quite happy if the ads all did that for the 3 minutes.

Doesn't sound like it's a traditional ad in a commercial break, sounds more like it'll happen at a time where it might interrupt what you're watching.

It's a stupid idea if it's the latter. Also, is ambient mode designed to never turn off your TV? That's a stupid waste of electricity, if I don't want to see my TV I'll build something to hide it.

There's just so much reading fail in this thread.

I honestly despair sometimes, it seems these days people are completely unable to assimilate any information beyond a stupid clickbait article headline.

This ^, and it's a waste of bandwidth loading whatever it displays.

It's also wear and tear on your TV, so it'll wear out faster. Which is exactly what Samsung wants, of course.

And it's a jab at LG's/Sony's OLED lineup saying "our LCD TVs don't have burn-in :p".

And like you and others said, that's all setting aside the other ads Samsung will inevitably use this mode for.

Ultimate proof that you don't own anything anymore, you are just leasing the right to use it.

and yet, should the item ever fail to work the end user takes the monetary loss ... reminds me of all the fools who paid Coca-Cola to advertise for Coke (how much were those T-shirts, $20+ ?) ... fools

Wonder if Samsung has filed the proper EU environmental impact statements for the energy use of ambient mode vs simply turning the thing off?

Low energy ambient mode is paint a black rectangle larger then the TV behind the TV. Now off matches the background.

The only home hardware theater I'm connecting to the net is my roku.

If they try to screw the pooch by forcing me to watch advertising I'll ditch them for Kodi.

I'm shocked people aren't getting this It's an advertisement that'll be broadcast over cable. Has nothing to do with affecting Samsung TVs only, or just smart TVs.

It's still an evil ad, but nothing quite like what Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube did .....

I like the part where people never listen to those that are security conscious.

First Snowden.

Now this.

Yeah, let's just give up our privacy, security, and freedoms for minor conveniences. Let's do that!

Fuck this shit.

You're thinking of the trailer park grannies. Old people with solid pensions and who don't know anything about tech are easier targets to be upsold by salesman.
Nope when I think of old people I think of my mom. Cheap ass hell. She managed to find a 43" TV I never heard of. Don't know ho much she paid but doubt it of it was more then $150.

Seriously guys. You're falling for a viral campaign. The press release is written to make you think Samsung is doing something outrageous (like physically powering off the TV) when in fact they're just making an regular video ad that LOOKS like the TV is being turned off. Look closely (emphasis mine):

"Millions of TV sets across the UK will appear to turn themselves off this weekend"
"a 20-second advert which has been designed to trick viewers into thinking their devices have been turned off "

Screams 1984 entertainment panel to me. Aside from the actual point that parawing742 pointed out, no tv is going to be net connected in this house. They can't control what's not connected.

Exactly what I've been trying to point out. Most other posters here are thinking this is something that's going to affect smart TVs or actually turn them off.

The ironic thing is, some of them are worried that "stupid old people" will be confused by what's happening.

Even more so in the UK. They actually have to have a government license issued from the government to watch TV.

Well if you've ever watched any BBC content I paid for that with that very license. You're welcome.

However, I am cancelling my license soon probably as I only watch Netflix and Prime now. Haven't watched any live broadcast TV or used iPlayer in a couple of years.

So its not actually turning anything off. Just giving a brief demo of something they added after you bought the TV?
Yeah color me not upset.

But it is now mine (actually mine is an lg...)
6seconds of them doing what they like to equipment I own in my hone in MY free time is 6seconds too much

A Samsung add broadcasted on ITV/Ch4 is something different as it is during an add break and would just be product advertisement BUT specific feature demo when they want Not against somewhere schedule is too far.

Time to blacklist Samsung like I have sony

--edit--
Right so it is just an advertisement during normal add times (but paid to be at the same time in all channels) meh... I do t watch that much TV so meh
