Is there a way to get wake on lan (WAL) functionality (or something similar) even when your motherboard doesn't support wake on lan?

Well, the computer that it would be kind of nice to have it on is a Dell inspiron 3552. It's a budget laptop, 1 generation back in processors (6th or 7th gereration processor). As an aside, a search on the Dell laptop support community forums showed even higher end laptops not having it. Perhaps it's mostly desktops that it has been built into.your mobo has to have it or it wont work. how old is this system? pretty much everything in the last 10-15 years has WAL
I could live with being able to just wake it from sleep mode.Well, not exactly. Depends on what state the machine is in that you want to wake up from. Powered off? No. Sleep mode? Yes. Any add-on nic (like most Intels) that supports WoL can have the feature enabled in the device properties in Windows where it will wake up the computer from sleep mode.
I assume that you are saying without an external (usb) network card. I didn't see it in the bios. I will look some more/ hunt for resources.the onboard should support that type of wake up. I was thinking from off...
