I thought a G-sync monitors wasn't suppose to go over 144 fps ??

So I recently got a Predator XB271HU I have it set at 144Hz with G-sync enabled. I've been playing some newer games like BF4/DOOM (2016) and within the game settings I have v-sync turn off like I'm suppose too right ? In these game I never go over 100fps and it looks dam good.

So I start playing a older game called Defense Grid: The Awakening so this game is running like 800-1000 fps and the video card is like coil whining plus I don't want to run that many frames it's just not good. Anyway I was surprised I thought with 144Hz plus G-sqnc it was going to cap itself at 144Hz.

So what do I do now when I play older games, what are my options ?
 
The word seems to be that you want to turn vsync on with gsync and limit frames to a couple below your refresh rate. My monitor does 165, so I turn on vsync and limit my fps to 162.

What Decibel said. Another option (since the game runs so fast) is to use FastSync, which is perfect for when your performance is 3-5x higher than your refresh rate. Only down side is that you'll still get coil whine due to FS not doing anything to keep the cards from rendering so fast.

No, turn V-sync off in the game, then turn it on in the Nvidia control panel. Thus when FPS goes above 144, V-sync is enabled and below that G-Sync is used. Just capping the framerate to 142 or something would be a better solution.

Just using a frame limiter adds a little input lag. Don't ask me why, it's just how it is. Using a frame limiter set below the refresh rate will prevent V-Sync behavior. You actually want to set the limiter to something like 135. If you're playing a game like Defense Grid where you're getting close to 1000 FPS then use Fast Sync instead.

What frame limiter do we even have that consistently works? Not Riva Tuner, it didn’t work with Nvidia drivers last I tried (confirmed by others). I hate wonky intermittent fixes.

Fast sync and no vsync along with gsync eliminates the feel of mouse lag, the momentary hitch when you go in and out of gsync range, and allowed me to enjoy gsync.

As to stupid high FPS. I have the same problem with Kingdom Rush. But it blinks at that high a FPS rate. I just turn on my crypto mining nicehash program and it drops from 1100fps to 45fps —- and i make money while gaming. Problem solved. ;)
 
G-Sync works if your rendering frames at or below your monitors refresh rate (144Hz in this case). As you've discovered, it does nothing if you're rendering frames above 144FPS.

This can be attacked in two ways:

  • Enabling Nvidia Fast Sync as described above so that even if you're rendering above 144FPS, you'll still get lag free and tear free gameplay.
  • If the game supports it, limiting your framerate to 144FPS or a little below so that G-Sync will work.
Fast Sync + G-Sync really is the best of both worlds.

That's a damn good question about a reliable, simple framerate limiter for games that don't support it natively.

For me, discovering Fast Sync has been incredible. Overwatch has been the ONLY game that G-Sync flat out refuses to work even when my framerate is at or below my monitors refresh (100Hz). It even has built in framerate capping.

Enabling Fast Sync for Overwatch only in the Nvidia Controlpanel has been game changing.. literally. Years after release I finally have tear free gameplay.

I'll try Fast sync and G-sync but I still don't like the idea of having frame rates going stupid high. Plus I'm assuming if my frame rates will still be stupid high I'm still going to get sometimes coil whine. Fast sync seems to only fix one problem not the other two that I don't like.

Yeah its an annoying situation when the game doesn't have a built in frame rate limiter.

144hz gsync monitor will only work if FPS is capped at 144fps or lower? so if a ingame setting has a fps limiter, the fps needs to be set to 144 and lower? is ths correct

If by "work" you are just talking about the G-Sync functionality then yes. It can't eliminate tearing if you're rendering frames above the displays native refresh rate (in this case, 144Hz).

As I mention above you have two options if you're in this situation.

  1. Cap you're framerate as you said which isn't always easy to do.
  2. Enable FastSync in the Nvidia Control Panel for the game with the issue.

Maybe it does
In DX10+ games I tested I didn't notice FastSync to be faster than Vsync OFF
In DX9 games it is faster, at least with RTSS
Maybe FastSync only removes input lag added by RTSS?... who knows.

What FastSync does is it eliminates occasional tearing that might occur when using G-Sync with V-Sync OFF just like V-Sync ON does but without adding input lag because V-Sync ON does indeed add input lag even with G-Sync in some games.

And sure someone will post BlurBuster test from way back on one/two games which was done long time ago to prove me otherwise despite it proving nothing at all :banghead:

So in single player games I might just use v-sync but online games I won't.

Agreed, which is what option one is for :-p

I dunno, I can't find a reason to ever use V-sync unless it's literally the only option or im playing with a controller.
