After all the pre-hype over the last week, we finally get a look at some actual gameplay from RAGE 2. I still want my $60 back for RAGE. All in all, it makes me want to go back and play Mad Max.

Check out the trailer.

Mankind is in peril. In the decades following an asteroid’s devastation, most of the earth has become an unforgiving wildland where bloodthirsty factions vie for control of precious resources. Pockets of civilization have emerged to claim their space in the world, but the tentative peace they’ve established is being threatened. RAGE 2 follows Walker, the last Ranger of Vineland, as he fights to survive the chaos of the dystopian world into which he was born. With a wide array of weapons, vehicles and strange powers, Walker sets off to take down the tyrannical Authority.

I clicked the PreOrder link and it showed me The Simpsons: Road Rage on Amazon. Lulz.

Seems like it could be okay. Tough to tell based on quick-cut highlights, but it feels like what they wanted the first Rage to be like. I'm curious how "open" the world is. Going too far down the sandbox hole without enough content has ruined many a game.

Some more from their press site.

The Open-World Shooterverse
It’s the perfect mix: id Software’s first-person shooter pedigree, Avalanche Studios’ mastery of the open world sandbox, with a healthy dose of pedal-to-the-metal vehicle combat. From the swamplands and jungles where enemies lurk among the dense foliage, to the open deserts where a passing car is more likely to mow you down than offer you a ride, the world of RAGE 2 is not a gentle, nurturing place. The people who have survived in this landscape have had to learn to protect themselves and keep their heads on a swivel, especially with the reemergence of a familiar menace.

As if the gangs and mutants aren’t enough, Walker also has to contend with the Authority, returning antagonists from the first game who threaten anything good remaining in the world. Led by General Cross, the Authority is on a renewed mission to hunt down the few remaining pureblood Arkists left in the world, and Cross is willing to slaughter everyone to achieve his goals. That’s where Walker’s wealth of unique guns and gear comes in – and he’ll need every one of his powerful weapons to defend the wild wasteland he calls home.

Walker, Vineland Ranger
A Ranger’s arsenal isn’t limited to the abundance of upgradeable weapons and toys at their disposal. Fueled by Arkist blood, these elite fighters are the only people in the world who can harness special Nanotrite abilities. However, this blood has also made them a target for the Authority, and after years of fighting, Walker is the only Ranger still standing.

Among the arrows he can choose from his Nanotrite ability quiver are the power to crush enemies into paste from above in a devastating slam attack or send them flying away from him with a lethal energy push. Walker will also learn to channel these Nanotrites into his weapons, pushing them into an awe-inspiring Overdrive, a unique skill that lets him push his guns beyond their limits and unleash absolute hell on his foes. Chain these abilities together to make Walker a powerhouse of destruction, quickly refilling his Overdrive meter. While in Overdrive, Walker’s guns do more damage, they gain new attributes, enemies drop better rewards and Walker’s health starts to regenerate. When timed correctly, Overdrive is more than enough to tip the scales in a tricky fight.

There’s a lot more to come for RAGE 2. Tune into the BE3 Showcase on Sunday, June 10, at 6:30pm PT for more gameplay and details. You can catch the stream live on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook or here at Bethesda.net.

The driving aspect was one of those things that could have differentiated RAGE more than it did. If GTA can do shooting and driving pretty well, a game that's only focusing on those two things should be able to do them exceptionally well.

I have to hold my comments on how the game will be until i see more game play and details before I judge if its worth it. Wouldn't it be nice if they gave those who bought RAGE a discount? HAHAHAHA!
I guess if they do it right it could be a great game but I still have reserves but Bethesda does have a decent rep.....

I played the better version of this already. It's called "Borderlands"
Edgy. Not sure how a real Borderlands 1 fan could not be immediately impressed by and want to play this game. This actually looks like everything I wanted Borderlands 3 to be, becaus I loved the BL1 aesthetics.

The team who made Mad Max, who have experience creating a post-apocalyptic, desert world - joining forces with the team who made DOOM2016 - and let's face it, id Software knows gunplay; all in an openworld setting? This is now my 2019 most anticipated.

Made the comment in the PC Gaming thread that it looks like they turned it into a better Destiny. Can't wait.

Well, I'm officially very excited. This looks like exactly what I want to play right now. Time to play back through the original, because it's also quite good.

Yeah, me too.

There was a lot of whining about the first one, and yes, it did have some faults but was quite entertaining. This looks fun, and I will most likely purchase this game when it becomes available.

I'm sure I'll get this.... but I tend to hate driving in games. It does nothing for me.

You know, while I'm upset that Avalanche haven't been working on Mad Max 2...I have to admit that I kind of didn't think of the fact that it's still Avalanche and Mad Max was pretty incredible. With that in mind I can see this being a pretty goddamn good game. The driving and car combat aspects WILL be on point, I can promise that...level design and art design WILL be on point, Mad Max was fucking gorgeous and fascinating to explore, and game play over all WILL be fun and exciting.

So yeah, again, mad it's not Mad...but they'll still do this series justice and, based on the theme of this game, will be right up their apocalyptic alley.

Mad Max actually made it fun. Occasionally coming across enemy caravans and trying to smash their vehicles into submission with all kinds of weaponry and gadgets. It was kind of a mix of Twisted Metal and Batman Arkham Asylum.

I am honestly looking forward to this. I'm going to painfully play through the original RAGE again as I missed the DLC that was released a few years back.

I LOVED Mad Max, so the fact that the same studio is helping out here should be a huge benefit.

This still doesn't confirm if it will be a single player game or multiplayer focused crap.

they did say it was an open world game. I can't imagine it being coop unless as a different game mode. that would be a pretty huge shift.

Rage was kind of meh. the big problem was all the texture popping and they never really fixed it in a satisfactory way. it was an ok game but did not do anything to make it great. as said borderlands was much better. this had some mild crafting. hopefully they go to a looting system (not as a monetization method though)

Wide open world. ROTFLMFAO. So its a new game, not like Rage. ;)

RAGE was pretty open. Not at first, you kind of had to make your way through to the next stages, but then you could travel back and forth pretty much at will. Not fully wide open, but open enough within a fairly linear game. So a compromise. I see it transitioning well to an open world though, unlike some games would. Some games should stay very linear (or branching) and story driven, but I think RAGE will do well like this, and still feel like RAGE.

It also looks like they've maintained the original id-style aesthetic which to me is VERY important. id's games (unlike many) are equal parts art-style, precise shooting mechanics, dark themes, and a bit of envelope pushing in at least some graphical aspects. There's usually a wafer-thin story (usually interesting, but not heavy handed) to tie it all together. What I see in this trailer (and of course we have to actually play the game to know for sure) is this very id style, just expanded into a larger and more open world. I'm ok with that. I don't know that I'd be ok with it for Doom or Quake (would need to see how well the adaption was made) but for RAGE...

So what you're saying is, you sat still, whirling the mouse around, JUST to make the textures pop in, instead of just playing the game as intended. :p Because while it was in motion during normal play, it was NEARLY undetectable in the end. Sure you could MAKE it pop, but you really had to be looking for it. I will admit though, that even knowing that the pop-in is there at all is annoying. I just disagree that it's distracting at all in the late/final versions of the game.

I wouldn't call Borderlands better, but it was definitely tip top, and SO much fun. (and pretty funny on top of it) I'm also a fan of Borderlands (several hundreds of hours into BL and BL2 with friends and my kids). I don't think the two need to be mutually exclusive simply because they exist in similar universes. I'll happily play as many BLs and RAGEs as they'll throw at me. I do think both are better than the 3D Fallout games... but that's just because I prefer the raw shooing and action of RAGE and the humorous looting and lite-RPGing style of Borderlands to the typical BethPG. Sure the humor of Borderlands is a little juvenile, but I have to admit that I broke out laughing on several occasions anyway.

I played Rage a lot, and really enjoyed most of it. I never understood the bad reputation the game got.

I hardly ever saw textures pop in, and it was never something that was detriment to my enjoyment of the game.

I really enjoyed exploring the (semi) open world and taking on the various challenges, and the levels we're challenging and quite beautifull.

As said, I really enjoyed it a lot.

I'm still playing RAGE. Not too shabby for a $12 game, lol. The new RAGE 2 looks promising. I haven't played a single player game since FC5 came out tho. Gotta catch up on my single player games.

Mad Max I can't figure out. Stuck at a point with a steel gated wall.

The Jaw? Just keep doing missions for Jeet and Gutgash until you unlock the Thunderpoon. You need the Thunderpoon to destroy the hinges, which will allow you to pull The Jaw down with the Harpoon.

I know I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed Rage 1. I was scared away, by all the press. But picked it up, for a discount later.

Movement looks crazy enough. Did you see that 10m jump lol

They have the tech to do whatever the fuck they want, and their running and gunning is usually next to none.

I had a lot of fun in the original just doing buggy-stunts, or dropping into the sewer systems for target practice. I really wasn't that into the actual races, but driving around outside the cities was excellent.

No the hell you did not have to look hard for it that was it was unbelievably obvious right in front of your damn face. It was extremely annoying as it would constantly do it even though it already loaded the same texture if you turn back that same direction. And on top of that the texture that actually loaded usually look like complete shit even for a game at that time. Most of the textures were flat-out terrible and outdated looking and to have the pop in on top of that was laughably stupid. Most people certainly didn't have an SSD way back then but now if you play the game on a modern computer with SSD then you would be right as it's not as easy to notice it without looking for it most of the time.

Mad Max really was a riot, could have used more variety in the Batman-style hand to hand combat but the vehicles were all a joy to drive, and the game overall seemed pretty well focused on the fun. This definitely seems like more in the same vein.

It looks fun. Visuals are great. It should be a pretty cool game.

I just don't get why all post apocalyptic stuff has to be done in that punk style. It bugs me. From Mad Max to this to Borderlands.

I gave RAGE several chances...it just wasn't a good game IMO. What they tried to do with megatextures was cool, but ultimately something of a failure. I honestly just didn't find the gameplay to be that compelling, either, especially against other offerings at the time.

I dunno about a RAGE 2. Will wait for reviews for sure.

While I wouldn't suggest that Rage was a game I wanted a sequel to, iD have been on a fucking roll with Doom and Wolf II. IF this game plays like Doom in a proper open world environment I could be all over this.

Rage was completely on rails. You had no choice what you did and very little choice as to how. A huge disappointment.

I'm sorry, I can't agree with you there. This game (other than the short try I gave it on the current AMD hardware on release) has looked quite beautiful taken as a whole on everything that I've played it on since. Including things like the GTX 460 / 560. There are in fact textures in the game that don't look great. Most of them are on indoor areas, and I will admit they look washed out, and some are just kinda stupid in some places. However, the game runs silky smooth, the aesthetic is amazing, so, I don't know, I guess I was just too busy enjoying myself to wander over to the corner of an indoor level, and sit and pick apart an ugly texture, so I could go complain about it on some internet forum.

The game had flaws (some worse than others) on release. They fixed it. I can see how some hardware combos might not have exhibited this based on the state the game was in on release day. I can assure you that everything that I've run it on since that release day AMD GPU (ATI at the time maybe?) 6x00 series, that the game has been gorgeous. If I walk into a new area, whip the mouse as fast as I can, yes, I can see some pop-in. Who cares though, because that's not how I play a game. If you can't get over that, then good for you. Play something else.
