gaming desktop for $600

my brother is looking at buying or building a gaming pc for my nephew for $600. just need the case and everything that goes in it.

he mentioned building but doesn't know gpu prices are high. I'm thinking his best bet is to buy prebuilt? he'll probably be playing fortnite.
 
You can buy a prebuilt or consider buying an AMD APU 2400G based system? It'll do fortnite on medium settings at 1080p 40-60fps, then save up extra later for a new GPU? Worth a look. 4core 8 thread CPU.

Otherwise prebuilts actually seem to be better for value in some instances as they get parts for MSRP rather than the inflated prices.

That said, where would you be buying from? (US? Microcenter nearby?) etc.

~150 for a GTX 1050 (non TI) (now 375 total). grab a 120gb SSD, some 30-40dollar PSU (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...1&cm_re=corsair_cx_450-_-17-139-201-_-Product) and same for a case (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133347)

Perhaps? (I understand Tax comes into play for the US, so this may blow over budget).

But just some ideas.

I can't speak from experience, but I think you'll be unhappy with an i3. Find something used, even 4 core i5 can choke on some new games like bf1. Been told the microstutter is real.

That said I don't think fortnight is that demanding.

The ryzen apus look pretty good, saves the overpriced GPU as well.

The Core i3 Coffee Lake is a quad core just like the Ryzen 2200G of about the same price. You pay $20 more for a core with 20% higher gaming/productivity performance.

Core i3 Coffee = Core i5 Kaby.

For cheap casual gaming the 2200G with integrated graphics can't be beat.

But the 2200G is much slower than a GT 1030, and those value builds top-out at $450. Going beyond that, for a custom gaming build you use the big-kid platform with a big-kid GPU.

I'd never recommend a2200g for gaming. I guess I did say apus.

Big kid platform requires the 6 core cpu, otherwise you're still in the kiddie park. 4 threads does not a gaming cpu make.

Used or prebuilt, the OS is what kills the budget now days, unless you want to try those $5 Win 10 keys.
