I had a 3570K mildly overclocked on a Gigabyte board since around 2013. Earlier this year it quit booting. I could go into the BIOS and see all the drives but it wouldn't actually boot Windows. Since it was that old I took the opportunity to replace it with an 8400, and since it wasn't important any more I decided to try delidding it. I went old school and just used a regular razor. Relidded with AS5 and, initially, I'm using nothing to reseal the heat spreader; it's just held in place by clamp pressure from the socket and Hyper 212.

Booted Ubuntu from a live CD the first time. The BIOS is set to overclock to 4.0 on all four cores but I haven't done any testing yet. First thing is to see if I can get stuff like hwinfo64, prime95, occt, or equivalents for Linux, and then see how much faster it'll go.

I know I should've cleaned the board & IHS up more but I was more concerned with making sure I hadn't damaged anything. If I bother to use this for anything after stability testing, I'll do it.

I tried 4.4 to start, just bumped the speed in the BIOS and booted to a Ubuntu live CD (all I had handy.) Prime95 for about 10 minutes seemed fine. I was looking for something like HWInfo64 for Linux but didn't find anything so I have no idea of temps. Voltage was set in the bios to something like 1.225. Will try for higher later--I was never able to get this thing above 4.1 stably before.
 
Well, in my noob travels, I seem to recall that many would run 4.5ghz or so w/out a delid back in the day. Some less for sure; but as in possibly your case, due to horrible tim mating to the die possibly causing temp issues etc....

So there's every hope you could do 4.5-4.6ghz.

I would personally keep voltage below 1.35 or 1.325; as with most intels in my experience(regardless of generations I've owned), it seemed to be very much diminishing returns past 1.325-1.35v, when heat ramped up and less mhz were gained.

I would not be surprised with a GOOD AIO 240mm+ cooler or GOOD aircooling, if you'd hit 4.6-4.8ghz.

If it's stable in the 4.4-4.6ghz area on your current aircooling setup you may just want to call it quits and a success though. Going for higher, IMO would be calling for some liquid metal tim between cpu/spreader, and better cooling. Even that 4.4-4.6ghz is nothing to sneeze at ;)

PS that die looks HUGE compared to a 6700k or 7700k ;)

I'll see if it will go a bit higher. It's got a Hyper 212 evo. I'm not interested in spending anything more on it; I've already gotten 5+ years out of it, and will probably just turn it into a file server or something. Basically I just want to see how much more life I can get out of it.

I actually already bought a Ryzen 2200G to be a Minecraft-and-anything-else-I-feel-like server. Pretty nice--the auto OC on the motherboard (Asus Prime B350M-E) went to 3850MHz with fairly high voltage (1.4, it says. I need a good PSU for it--it's using some 7yo Liteon salvaged from a Dell at work--and I'll try tweaking it a bit more and see what I can do about that voltage.) Since it's not going to be directly used for gaming I'm not going to mess with GPU OC.
 
I just got done doing mine. But, I'll have to wait a couple of days until I can build my new system. At least the sealant will be nice and dry by then. :)
 
Welcome to the delid crew :)

Definitely a worthwhile modification, especially for Haswell and newer i7s. Before delidding my 7700k, I was limited to a 4.8GHz overclock @ 1.3v with load temps around 80-90C and now I'm doing 5.2GHz @ 1.425v with load temps under 75C.
