First Boring Company Tunnel in L.A. Almost Done

Elon is pretty happy these days because his first tunnel under L.A. is almost complete. He plans to offer free rides in a few months and also plans to give priority to pods carrying pedestrians and cyclists who will pay less than the cost of a bus ticket. This is great and might be a game changer for those stuck in traffic in L.A. once all of the tunnels are complete. Nice job Elon.

As mentioned in prior posts, once fully operational (demo system rides will be free), the system will always give priority to pods for pedestrians & cyclists for less than the cost of a bus ticket.

Tunnels, when designed properly, are known to be one of the safest places to be during an earthquake. From a structural safety standpoint, the tunnel moves uniformly with the ground, in contrast to surface structures. Additionally, a large amount of earthquake damage is caused by falling debris, which does not apply inside tunnels. Some examples:

  • 1994 Northridge Earthquake: no damage to LA Subway tunnels
  • 1989 Loma Prieta (Northern California) Earthquake: no damage to tunnels, which were then used to transport rescue personnel
  • 1985 Mexico City Earthquake: no damage to tunnels, which were then used to transport rescue personnel

Traffic is so bad in LA that now pedestrians and cyclists also get stuck in it? :ROFLMAO:
 
While I am sure there is financile incentive/motivation, i personally find it awesome that Elon Musk out of all the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ wealthy folks out there seems to be doing and finding ways to help where he sees problems that there can be solutions to.

I am sure there might be some areas/times there may be better solutions, at the very least he is doing something.

Unlike some of the other major corps/people that have $$$$$$$$$$$ that do not seem to be too concerned about looking for solutions to problems that only need their $$$$$$$$$$$ to fund the project.

I still want/am waiting for that internet satelitte thing to really take over so everyone has access to very high speed net at a reasonable price no matter where you are located on the earth :)

granted there are "hurdles" that need to be overcome and a technician cannot race over and fix a "downed line" still is a very novel idea.
 
I read the comments on Instagram. /sigh. Most were attaboy. That's cool.

A few were "sciency." O boy those were bad. One person asked him to put magnetic coils in the tunnels to get free energy from the cars as they sped by.

Another was afraid all these tunnels would destabilize the geological area. All the tunnels he has planned make up a tiny fraction of less than a billionth of a percent of the "geological area."

This isn't fracking that shatters huge volumes of rock.

You really hope the proposed super sonic speeds are true to get through them as fast as possible?

That said, whatever you think of the guy, good for this. I'm curious how it will all turn out.

LOL man.. that was an exciting one. I was literally halfway pulling up my pants getting ready for work when everything picked up what felt like a couple feet.. shifted violently to one direction, then fell back down. with me falling back onto the bed.


was a trip to step outside afterwards and see the entire san fernando valley.. completely black. Until the lights kicked in at burbank airport


spent the rest of the day riding out after shocks sitting on my bed drinking from the broken booze bottles

I was in Modesto during that EQ for my grandmother's funeral. I remember feeling the ground "vibrating. Was weird as hell
 
But wait, we all know that Elon is just a subsidy farmer, so he must be doing this at tax payers expense somehow. Right? /sarc

I got one better for you:

Tunnels underground, in an earthquake prone area, without side access tunnels in case of accidents, stalls, or earthquake. So, if a pod gets stuck, the people are stuck with traveling down a low air pressure tunnel all the way to either the next station or the last one.

what was supposed to be 'unpossible' about them? There is nothing earth shattering here. He purchased two used tunnel boring machines, got permission to dig the tunnel and started digging. Originally, his idea was to have a system where cars would be loaded in and raised and lowered to the street at various points, but he has since changed the concept to something more possible. That said, it's still a low capacity, less efficient subway system and not much else. Move 8 to 16 people 6.5 miles in about two and a half minutes, or up to 1800 in 7 to 15 minutes.

It is worth noting that a simple boring machine would only work in specific areas. There are many cities where much more is needed due to existing infrastructure, water tables, etc. Boston or New York are two good example where this is the case. The companies hope is to eventually reduce the cost of tunneling, but there is no indication that they are anywhere near to accomplishing this.
 
if it's cheaper than a bus ticket, all the poor people are gonna ride it, and it will get congested fast.

MTA is gonna be pissed with elon stealing their business

When they widened US75 from downtown Dallas to IH635, they drilled two drainage tunnels, which turned out finishing so quickly & so under budget that DART contracted for a third tunnel for their light rail system from Mockingbird to downtown.

They also wanted to use the same system to drill two tunnels under Mockingbird from US75 to Inwood Rd, to relieve the congestion and delays in Highland Park, but the Parkies all voted it down because they're too inbred to get the advantages.
