Barrowch Whale Shark Threadripper Water Block Review

The Barrowch Whale Shark Water Block is built specifically for AMD's Ryzen Threadripper processor and its TR4 socket on X399 chipset motherboards. It is one of the best looking water blocks we have seen for Threadripper, and even has an onboard temperature sensor and display right on the water block. Once mounted, how does it cool?

Is it practical to use different springs with it? Maybe different (admittedly likely to be less nice-looking) screws as well?

Such small heads and tiny bolts, I did not have any others here to try.

So, the temp readout is a pretty cool feature, though It would be even more awseome if it could be attached to a drive bay or something so you can actually see it from the front of the case.

Judging by the on-block temp readout and the frag harder lights I guess this is one for all the kiddies who love to put their cases on top of their desks with the case windows facing them in order to impress people who walk by with the shiny lights in their PC build.

That's cool I guess.

To me it would seem that even if this appeals to you, it can't possibly make up for the relatively poor performance.

That oled temp display seems fairly wasted since it's so small and no way to actually see it when inside a case.

The traditional "Kyle finger" was absent from each and every pic.. 0/10, would not read. Probably faked.
* Edit: No, it's there! O.K., review is legit after all, my apologies.

I kinda wanted this to perform better; if it did, someone might start bringing them over and force the prices down, but whatever :)

I'm still partial to the newer Koolance revision... but then I really do have a soft spot for Koolance in general. You always remember your first :)

Sorry for the threadjack, but I wanted to chime in about a company I found, FreezeMod. They're in China, and come with all the joys of ordering from a company in China (strange English website, two-three week shipping, etc) but they seem to carry most of Barrow's products at decent prices. I've ordered from them a couple of times.

You were too kind to the Barrow brand.

It is near the high end of what it can handle, yes it can "take the heat" but not well.
There are way better coolers available.
About the only thing going for it is that temp gauge.

Bah.......got off my lawn.

It is a bummer that the block performs poorly. I haven't used any Barrow blocks, but they're by far my favorite brand for fittings: good finish, excellent price, and no obnoxious branding.

Likewise, my only complaint thus far was my being required to order them through AliExpress (/shudders) or Ebay. And even that is out now, watercool.de ships mosts of them.
(for US customers however, yeah, i know..)

* I have not heard of Freezemod, anything further you could add would be greatly appreciated btw. You never know.

Guess it's not bad than the old EK block... the RayStorm looks better with each review. Price performance king right there.

Speaking of which, any plans to review the updated EK block?

EK wanted me to sign a fairly extensive NDA with them, and I refused. I am not on the "first wave" of reviews on the new block. They reached out to asked to "send samples" yesterday. Of what, I am not exactly sure yet.

Edit: Just got word from EK. "I was thinking about sending the Full Nickel and RGB version of the
blocks, so you have two versions."
