[H] is in a heated competition called the Pentathlon. It's a series of BOINC projects designed around a challenge between teams. As of this post we are in 3rd place overall, but we need help.

As you can see 4th is right behind us. We need help in one of them.

You can sign up here: https://numberfields.asu.edu/NumberFields/
The team link is here: https://numberfields.asu.edu/NumberFields/team_display.php?teamid=19

Ryzen and Thread Ripper systems are tearing it up in the points. My 4P AMD systems are barely hanging onto these desktop processors.

You know, i never dared enquire, because i knew that if i phrased it in average normal person's terms, someone was bound to get offended.
But years have gone by and i'm old enough to no longer give a damn, lol, so..

What exactly are those teams? And why does each forum have a separate one? And for the love of God, what's with the competition?
(if this is some form of distributing thing, why not join Stanford's or whomever's and call it a day? If the answer is "no you dumbass, this is different", the above apply)

My thanks for replying, for your patience, or both :)

SETI.USA is a Distributed only team. They have a site/forum and are basically dedicated to the SETI Project, but they are so large in numbers that some members venture off into other projects.
Planet 3DNow! is mostly an AMD news site.
HardOCP is the best site.
Team China is a distributed computing only team with their own forum as well, similar to SETI.USA.
Overclock.net is similar to HardOCP.

Each forum has it's own team. Just like in sports each city/country has it's own team.

The competition is to bring awareness to these types of projects and usually to the projects that don't get much attention.

Stanford handles Folding@Home which is almost strictly protein "mis-folding" research for diseases that occur from that. They have their own closed ecosystem for their computing. These challenges I posted about run under a large blanket software called BOINC where their are many, many different research projects. From calculating large numbers, finding cures to cancer and viruses, understanding the universe, mapping the galaxy and a whole lot more.

Right now the competition consists of two projects. NumberFields@home and Universe@Home.

Hope that answers all your questions if not feel free to ask more.

Having teams breaks up the monotony of DC'ing. Instead of the same thing every day leading to boredom, we have teams that get together to compete. This builds friendships, creates teaching opportunities, and leads to people adding more resources to great causes that wouldn't normally be given.

We lost 3rd place in Numberfields@home to SETI.Germany.

AMD has made big improvements in their CPUs since the release of Ryzen. My three xeon boxes consist of sandy, ivy and haswell barely able to keep up with the new Ryzens and TRs in distributed computing (DC) from what I've seen. There are good synthetic benchmarks mainly on rendering and games but if you want to find out how AMD CPUs perform in distributed computing, come and test out the DC projects in the ongoing BOINC Pentathlon. Need help on DC, don't hesitate to ask in that forum.

Being reading post in this AMD processor forums, who knows one day, I might setup an AMD system

Disclosure: I never own any AMD system.

For the record most of my systems are AMD and I beat pututu pants off on most projects. :p

You need to change your email sig. I'm only seeing intel...:p:p:p

Now you can run with one AMD epyc with 32C/64T with so much less power, well if you have the money;) So credits to AMD.

We need help in the universe@home project. I'm on my phone, but ill post details when I get on my PC. Or just go to the DC sub forum and open the pentathlon thread. 1st post will have the details.

So i just got the Numbers thing going and then realized Universe@home is in the last post
Guess I should wait till I wake up some more before I start these projects

You can run either project right now. Universe@Home will end on the 12th and Numberfields@home will end on the 19th.

Thanks for joining either way.

If you are running Universe@home, then on the 11th go ahead and switch to Rosetta@Home. It's a short, 3-day sprint in the pentathlon that lasts from the 11th till the 14th. We really need to score pretty well in here to keep our overall 3rd place.

Toss everything on Universe@home for the time being. If we lose a position in Universe we'll lose overall 3rd. Soon as the 11th rolls around we need to switch everything to Rosetta@home.

Seems we lost overall 4th anyway because team china took 3rd in universe@home.

I see I can put multiple projects on BOINIC, do I just tell the client to stop accepting new tasks for Universe@home to start Rosetta?
Looking to not lose any work that is in progress

We are doing pretty good, barely edging past Team China for 3rd place overall.

Need some more help on Rosetta though, unless you're already running Numberfields. If you're running Numberfields, leave it be. If you're just getting started load up Rosetta.

Everyone needs to be on Numberfields with your CPUs. Team China is catching us.

if only my electric bill didnt kick me in the nuts every time I help out I'd dump my systems back in :(

I feel you, I'm in Florida, was 97 today with constant rain. It's currently 85 in my office with the AC set at 71. I can't do DC all year like the badasses on the team, but I fire up every year to help in the competitions, a week or 2 of [H] running ain't gonna kill me, and we have to represent.
