You know, no matter what happens, I am always tempted by the upgrade bug at one time or another. That said, I would love to have an mGPU setup with my Vega 56 but, not at least until I can get another one Reference card at MSRP or lower. Till then, I will just wait.

I don't believe anything supports DX12 MGPU well yet, and Crossfire is already reported to be dead. I don't think that would be a good investment regardless of getting it at MSRP unless you're mining.

mGPU has only been implemented in a couple (or few games) but my understanding is that popular game engines are baking in mGPU code which means quite a few games may be getting support or, if not, new games should.

Several threads exist about Crossfire (or whatever RTG is calling it nowadays) support and while a lot of people keep predicting its demise about the same number of people are saying that it works just fine for them.

But, sure, definitely wait for prices to come back down to MSRP before plunging into this venture. (y)

Well, I might do it if I end up selling my machine I brought home from work. (I built a computer for work but, I did not need it there anymore since they provided me with an equivalent workstation instead.) We will see, going to be a while before we see Vega at MSRP anyways, by the looks of it.

Both vendors backed off of development support due to the inherent hurdles of low-level APIs, however, all major game engines now have support for SLI at least. Crossfire support is right behind for those engines lacking.

That said, it's hard to recommend multi-GPU without a defined need.

Ive had several multi-GPU setups throughout the years so here is my view...
Thinking of going multi GPU?
Then lookup reviews for multi GPU setups, and take note of the EXACT games used in the reviews that support multi GPU.
Do you play those EXACT games? If yes, then good ....do it!

If you're expecting future games to include multi-GPU support, then you're more often than not going to be disappointed.

Always go multi-GPU based on games you KNOW have multi GPU support, not what future games you "hope" will have multi GPU support.

I have had mGPU setups since the 2900 Pro days. The only one I skipped was the 290x because they ran too hot but, I did try them.

II hav lots of games and mGpu is a mixed bag but, it does work well, at least for 4k stuff. That said, it will be a while and the upgrade bug may go away. :)

Oh yeah, when it works it's great!
But since you've been doing it as long as me, you know sometimes it sucks too.
Ive actually had to completely DISABLE X-fire several times for some games just to get them to work properly.
And I had a Pair of Sapphire 290 Tri-X's that worked fine in x-fire as long as you had a mobo with proper spacing between the PCI-E slots to allow proper airflow. (and my huge side fan in my HAF-X case helped also)

Edit: I wish side fans would make a comeback, but now its all bling over functionality i guess.

I would suggest you hang on to your card and wait for something when you need it.

The mGPU situation is handled in gaming engines so if there is anything out there that supports it in the engine it should not be that hard to implement on other software using the same engine. What I can recall is that you can even used mixed videocards if the support is there you do not even have to buy a "second"card.

I still have good hopes on anything decent from AMD but don't expect to be bowled over by anything high end.

I have Vega 64 Crossfire. A number of games do support it. It can be a hit or miss, and there are definitely issues to deal with, but it's glorious when it works.

In my case, I'm running a 4K TV and wanted to stick with AMD, so there was no choice other than Crossfire as a single Vega 64 can't hang in 4K unless on low settings or old games.

What 4k tv? I am using a Samsung 43 inch 4k tv as my one and only monitor at home. (The 6290 based unit that I bought back in December for $349 + tax.)

Samsung KU6300 40". It's being used as a monitor on this computer and it's been great (paid $500 for it, but that was over a year ago).

Samsung KU6300 40" on Amazon.com (refurbished) for 12,100 USD. And you thought the price of used GPUs was outrageous!

mGPU/"Crossfire" just isn't worth it anymore. You're better off getting the most expensive card you can afford and going with that. My second Vega Frontier Edition is now sitting in a box not being used anymore.

The temptation is getting stronger and stronger. I am being tempted by https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078DZR5YK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 but, I want a reference card so that both my cards match. (I have a see through side panel.) Also, I want to be able to flash the Vega 64 bios like I have on my first Vega 56 Reference model and am going to have to wait for it.
But that was some kind of cheaper non referance wasn't it? Price was almost ok I guess

Barf. No really if you do VR with AMD mGPU you’ll be vomiting everywhere.

Honestly mGPU blows from both vendors. I’ve never seen anyone claim to enjoy it unless they were experiencing Stockholm syndrome.

I very much enjoyed all my mGPU setups from the 2900 Pro's onward. However, the 48xx ones had way to high of idle power to leave them on all day and the 290's where too hot so I quickly gave up on them. (Tried 390's from XFX, they looked good and worked well but, ran to hot as well for the case I was using at the time, an Define r3.) I do not do VR and besides, only flight simming would be fun with VR and that would make me barf no matter the cards in use.
