2 years since the 1070 and 1080 were released...

I game at 1440p. I'm still using a GTX 970, but I have an MSI 1080 8G Gaming in my Amazon cart, ready for me to pull the trigger for the last 4 hours. I thought I'd visit the extperts and just ask....

Is it even a good idea to spend $630 on a 1080? Is it "too late," you know? This is an arcitecture that is getting long in the tooth and is it worth that much money for someone who typically can afford to upgrade a GPU about every 3 years, tops?

Do you think Volta is going to outclass Pascal so much that just waiting for that is the better option, even though there are some games that are getting annoying, lagging at 1440p on my old 970?

Yeah, I would propably just stick with the 970 for another 6 months or so, but my S.O.'s old Radeon died and they get the 970. So upgrade is forced now, and I absolutely hate spending money on a new component unless there is a significant and thoroughly noticeable increase in overall performance. (Which is why all my gear isn't the latest/best stuff. Oh, and the tight budget. :))

I'm not even sure the MSI Gaming at $630 is the 1080 to get as far as price/performance for real-world gameplay experience, I've just heard a lot of positive info about it. Now this thread has me down on the whole idea of a 1080 after TWO YEARS... jeez

You most definitely want to hold fire on that. Only the extremes are worth considering at this stage. So like 1050ti or Titan Xp. If you really go 2-3 years for gcards, you'd be a fool not to wait for Turing.

I don't know... I would have certainly said "wait" if the release was close, but nVidia is going to string out the release of Turing as long possible for several very good reasons. I don't see the new cards coming until Q4.

We all know how this goes in recent years. nV marketing intentionally drops a few spicey details in the channel which hardware tabloids pick up on and, through speculation or prodding, they posit a release date that is months (if not a year) off. It's all an engineered marketing ploy to drum up the hype.

Well yeah, I'd agree and say just buy a titan Xp CE, but it's too late now, they're all sold out, and only the oddly more expensive titan Xp regular is available now.

But yeah, nvidia are certainly gunna milk the fuck out of Turing. But I expect we'll see something by end of June, which is only 2 months wait, so...

I found an EVGA 1080 SC, new for $575 and grabbed it. I know it's still too much $$$ for an old GPU architecture, but if this card will make me happy for the next 12 to 18 months, then it will have been worth it. I've had better luck with higher-end cards in my rigs over time anyway, compared to a "bit more affordable" upper-midrange GPUs I switch out more often.

Sorry I didn't listen to all the sound advice you guys offered helpfully when advising me against such an expenditure, other than to forget that $630 MSI. And now I can't find a game I like @ 1440p that will NOT play butter smooth with pretty much everything cranked to max, and that's what it's all about, right? (Also got a bit larger buget this time than I was expecting, and my S.O. is very pleased... Can't beat that!) She's absolutely thrilled with moving from her ancient, and recently deceased, Radeon 7890 --> Strix 970. Obviously no real comparison between those...)

Waiting is good. Curbing the "need" for instant gratification is a healthy habit. But there comes a point when reading Kyle's (and company's) reviews get to a person... I've been tardy, my fault. I'll take the hit this time. I'll learn next time for sure :)

More seriously, this thread is a valuable lesson for me not to langush in "it's okay" land for too long...

And special thanks to the Fry's Electronics in/near Palo Alto (where I've been "visiting" at Stanford hospital lo this last fortnight) for getting me that brand new EVGA. Dude came out from back with what he described, toungue in cheek, as "NOS" and gave me a decent deal.

For myself 1070 the past 2 years is still fast enough for now; would take a compelling feature for motivating an upgrade. The mini 1070 fits fine in my itx case; and works great with 1440p; though I suppose eventually newer games will require more polygons.

Newer games will be the 'feature', on top of higher resolutions and framerates (at some point) and VR.

Highly doubt they're coming by June (or even will be officially announced). We normally see blips on shipping manifests, rumors of sampling at this point. Latest I've seen is chip manufacture won't even start until July or August meaning release a few months later.

I said end of June, meaning July basically. But very simply, at some point soon nvidia needs to start making and selling cards in order to make money, otherwise that's money being given to AMD, and I'm sure nvidia's investors won't be too happy with that.

I wouldn't use lack of rumours as anything to go by. Nvidia are very good at keeping things dead secret till the very last minute, especially if they plan to open with FE cards first.

'1180' announced by end of June is what I'm expecting, but I'm not expecting '1180' as the name. I have a feeling they're going to shake up the entire naming scheme with the introduction of Turing.

I refuse to link WCCF tripe, but looks like an engineering sample has shown up in the TechGPU DB. 16GB VRAM... This thing is going to be a wallet burner, I'd guess $800 before gouging.

I'm guessing wood screw launch at computex and actual availability in Fall.

seems the older the 1070/1080 gets the more they are charging folks for it

Who are they?

Nvidia and AMD are probably just cashing out on current generation excess stock while they can, before having any announcements.

Normally i would agree with this.
But just last week, there was no stock.
Strange times!

They're strategically pumping allocation where pricing and new product release timing is projected to meet over the line chart -- that happened this week. Effectively, sell while demand is still high before dropping off a cliff.

As harmattan stated, they are not going to flood the market with inventory but rather distribute the graphics cards slowly at higher (read: over MSRP) prices. Demand is still high since there's no solid confirmation of next generation cards.

Bingo. It's similar to an aspect of an equity dribble where the company doesn't want to depreciate it's stock by flooding the market. In this case, we're dealing with GPUs.

Also, don't hold your breath for any more "leaks" this week (and possibly next) on the 1180 while nV and partners clear out inventory.

FE sucks never again I moved my computer about 6 feet away can still hear the fan even on a custom curve.

FE is only good if you're going to add a waterblock. The FE blower cooler looks like a great high quality setup but is a bad choice for air cooling.

FE needs to die. Why nVidia (and AMD) continue use a blower solution for their stocm cards amazes me. They sound like a tiny jet engine spooling up and dissipate worse than even the most basoc aftermarket cooler.

The only thing FEs are good for is creating a secondary market for people who want to watercool.

2 years and the pricing is still roughly the same as it was during launch, don't recognise this ever happen during my lifetime. By usual standards GTX 1070 would have been costing 320~$350 by now, GTX 1080 around $450. The best time to buy a new GPU is during launch now. Especially since launch pricing are usually pushed a bit aggressier to make it look good on paper but it's just a one wave of cards thing and from there the pricing will hike due lack of availability and high demand. Get your F5 spam tactics ready for the summer, you'll need it for the next gen!

Don't be suprised if you'll see GTX 1170 for $449 and GTX 1180 for $599 at launch but you'll have to be quick! That pricing will climb quickly

NVidia has been trying to re-baseline prices for years, and demand due to the mining explosion has handed them a gigantic gift. The new cards' MSRP are going to be $499 and $699 respectively, mark my words (not that you will be able to find them at MSRP).

Yep, I'm sure MSRP is going to go up, and then best of luck getting them for that price.

For now, I'm just waiting it out for the new cards to be released and a fire sale on the used 1080's and 1080 Ti's.

Once again people will pay 100 less that they would for 1180 Ti. I can't wait till they launch the 1180 and then 1180 ti for 100 more and drop the 1180 price. Nvidia has a way of collecting early adopter tax it seems. On top though I am not sure about wccftech specs. They are always guesstimating their shit and hope they hit some of the specs.

So it seems like Nvidia is slapping more cores and same clock speeds. Looking like 1180 will be close to 1080ti if looking at clock and cuda cores. Turing seems like a shrink to fit more cores. Nothing wrong with it but I am not sure about 25% faster than 1080ti. But it could be at 4k or so if faster memory and other tweaks.

I purchased a 1070 from the Newegg eBay store in March of last year for $319. Prices were on their way down and then mining happened again.

Nvidia should redesign the FE cards either less noise or better design so they actually become desirable unless you crypto for your hot pc.

They will launch ahead of Battlefield V if they can. A lot of builds will be calibrated for that game and they know it.

One of my observations watching BF5 reveal was all those Nvidia logos displayed on the back of the wall. Wonder how much did Nvidia pay DICE this time around? ;) BF5 will surely be one big part of Nvidia's marketing campaign this year.

can see it now , buy nvidia fe 1180 gpu for $700 and get bf5 free
or something like that .......

More like, pay $899, get nothing extra, realize you are getting 5-10% performance boost at best over the 1080ti, be sad.

I have a gigabyte 1080 from 2 years ago, never bought the 1080ti. Would it be a worthy upgrade to go from this to the new cards coming out soon? I bought it before the mining craze so i probably could resell it for the same price back if i can get my hands on the new ones for msrp.
