Facebook had implemented red warning labels to identify fake news and discourage users from reading debunked stories, but they actually had the opposite effect, as members of the social network have been sharing them at increased rates. The company’s engineers and content moderators have now opted to shrink them to reduce their visual prominence.
Facebook says it can reduce the spread of a false news story by 80 percent. Facebook needs to prove it has a handle on false news before more big elections in the US and around the world arrive. There’s a lot of work to do, but Facebook has committed to hiring enough engineers and content moderators to attack the problem.
