Don't Buy a MacBook Pro, Even On Sale

there ain’t denying the profitability of Apple post SJ.

That's been on the back of the iPhone. The Mac has been a second class citizen for some time now. Still waiting for the "real" Mac Pro they fessed to being embarrassed into producing last year.

Is it really too much to ask for a desktop computer made with, I dunno, real desktop parts? Instead of laptop parts so you can make the enclosure that's integrated with the monitor ridiculously thin? Thin is better to a point with laptops - but on a DESKTOP?!?! Even the new iMac Pro with it's bulkier custom cooling still throttles. Idiots.

fsking Johnny Ive and his white room. A pretty awesome parody:

A Mac owner and user since 1986. Except for the Performa years in the late 90's when things really went to shit. Sadly I think it's happening again.

I can't believe this keyboard crap has been going on FOR THREE YEARS now. Simply unbelievable.

Or gee, do you think maybe, just maybe some of us have had Apple products and been turned off by our experience...just maybe? BTW nerds is not an insult, but trying to use as such in your argument tells as a lot about your cognitive issues.
I'm a nerd, and I'm pretty proud of it.

That video is wrong. The guy knew all the risks and still proceeded to take apart the device and now asks for parts? He is an asshole who is aiming for more clicks.

Microsoft does the same thing on the Surface devices. This is nothing new in the industry.
That boy is a true New Yawker: you piss him off, he'll shank you with a piece of rebar he ripped out of the concrete, just for good measure.

He's not wrong; he's a helluva repairman who actually fixes the REAL problems. And he makes a pretty good living at it. I'm dead sure he can get most components (especially SMDs) from suppliers, and the rest from other Apple shops that haven't had the balls to call Apple out.

You are bringing up fat laden food. You saying my post doesn’t make sense?

Hell man, I’m up after 11pm. That’s shortening my life and I’m still on my iPad. That’s like a double whammy.
Triple-whammy: you keep looking I'm that mirror.

I am sitting on a little IT support outsoutce company.
onr of our taks is to prepapre new laptops for usage.
Apple macbooks's has a way high failure rate on us out of box than any other brand of laptop.

They once tried to charge us for a repair of a bran new macbook pro with a defectivem memory modul for "induced damage" even before looking at the laptop.

That I am a critical mommy lover, daddy hater... I mean critical consumer.

2 outta 3 aint bad. At least you know.

Triple-whammy: you keep looking I'm that mirror.

You a fat old man too? Sweet. Us Apple loving fat old guys should meet up.

I’ve had an excellent run with my Apple products. Even better run with my Apple stock investments.

The accountants have taken over... Cue Apple's demise in 3...2...1...

You underestimate the power of kool-aid. That marketing machine knows what it is doing. I mean, you do realize hipsters love to be denigrated? They know what they are doing over at that fruit company.

You should wander over to thier hardware pages and read them. They tout things which we have had access to for years as being something new. One of my favorite examples of their marketing is how they sell pixel density of monitors. Sure, when you have a 21.7" 4K monitor you can claim the highest pixel density around. Hehe.

Honestly, go read their pages on thier desktop if you want a good giggle. Then realize the kool-aid drinkers will stop at nothing to defend it. The amount of irrational and illogical rantings is just the icing on the cake.

No, Apple knows exactly how to treat thier customers. You just have to understand their customer first.

Unfortunately, sales have gone up since the introduction of that trash. We'll see if these reports result in a fall in sales, but I just don't see it happening.

The trendy is strong with Apple idiots (businesses and consumers). If you're not in your local apple store on a monthly basis having a "Genius" fixing something, you're doing something wrong?

Apple likes idiots paying extra for Applecare on everything, and users at least feel like they're getting their money's worth fixing crap like this. Your only way out is to give up on the platform in it's entirety.

Weirdly enough I have owned 4 macbooks over a period of 10 years and I never - not even a single time have had to use any services from Apple with them. This is a stark contrast to Windows computers which have failed mechanically and even more often by virtue of Windows updates breaking itself when malware or viruses haven't done enough damage already.

I personally am not a macbook owner. But my kid has lived by them for a few years. We have learned that macbooks under regular use in a college environment especially live about the length of their Apple Care plans and then within 4-6 months of that just die. At least to our experience with the past 4 macbook pro's.

Admittedly that first one while they were in highscool took quite a beating. Denting the aluminium chassis... having congealed coke in it... and such.. Those generations were built with real quality in mind and honestly it showed.

From what I am hearing and seeing a lot of regular MacBook Pro users simply avoided the new keyboard with the universal bar thing at the top like the plague it was. Keyboards are meant to be static devices. They should remain that way in my mind.

I do think that the designers ran with a gimmic and it is biting them in the ass currently. And if you don't have a AppleCare contract you are effed.

Hahaha. Deflect much, fanboi
Company makes products that sell. People buy them. Company makes money, lots and lots of money.

Nerds come out and claim people that buy them are sheep, stupid and uninformed. Nerds cling to a statistically small subset that have had issues with the product, and then have an “ah ha” moment.

Just maybe, Apple puts out a good product. A good product that people want to buy. Just maybe those people aren’t stupid. Just maybe. That’s cognitive dissonance. You own it.

Or you can tell me how the pretty girls at Starbucks are all on Apple iPhone and Macbooks, they must be stupid for using Apple products. Or not talking to you, but mainly because they use Apple products.

Casey Johnston is a woman. A rather hot woman who used to write for Arstechnica. You might want to correct your posting where you called her a him.

I work at a company that likely has a few hundred MBPro's in use (and I'm one of them). Mine is the latest model - the rest are a mix of a few years old to newer. I also work in IT. Honestly, I haven't heard of any issues from our Mac/PC guys related to keyboard failing yet. I'm not denying its a problem - just haven't ran into it yet at my work.
Now, if you want to talk to the IT guys that have to support the systems and remotely deploy policies and software, I know they will give you an earful...Apple is not known for being enterprise IT approved.

The level of hate just elevated. Not enough to call the products horrible, but to say that Apple customers want to be denigrated. Like all of them, enough that it’s probabably the number one company in the world with cash on hand. I’m not sure as of today. That’s cognitive dissonance.

Same stuff different day. Everyone has their biases and likes. Apple clearly has a loyal customer base and a reputation for quality and customer service that didn't happened because everything they do is crap. But in the end, Apple hardware when compared to the competition at similar price points isn't inherently better and which products of such wide distribution, Apple has a certain number of QA issues like everyone else.

Couldn't wait to get the 12.9 iPad Pro 2 with the BRYDGE keyboard and iOS11. Never saw the new MacBook Pro laptops as an option.
Most Apple fans that see me with this combo wished they opted for it over the 2016+ MBP as well.

I wonder what's the secret of apple. If any other manufacturer produced trash like this just once, everyone would say "I'll never buy anything from that company ever again" But apple has been selling badly designed products prone to failure for years and they still continue to get away with it.

i replaced my late 2013 13 " mbp with a 2017 15" mbp. my 2013 was a tank been all over the world with it and its still working today. my 2017 ive had it about 8 months now and i have two keys that feel spongy they still work but dont feel like the others. there is definitely a defect with this butterfly mechanism they are using.

I think every manufacturer faces the issue of quality from a certain segment of folks. Some will never buy HP or Dell or Lenovo etc.

Well, you just proved my point. You took what I said out of context to be able to make your little judgement.

I specifically said," you do realize hipsters love to be denigrated?" I did not say "Apple customers" nor implied all of Apple's customers are hipsters. Are you implying all of Apple's customers are hipsters? That would explain a lot.

For the record, I do not hate Apple. I just find the it funny how hard Apple customers defend the company. Truly, their marketing is something to behold if the measure is how hard a customer will defend it.

I'll make this general observation about Apple. The hardware is nothing that special. Pretty blaise actually, from an eletrical engineering perspective. What they do have is great industrial design. Their products look good and are packaged in interesting ways. If they were as advanced as they looked, they would have some seriously advanced hardware, but that is really not the case.

1. Make it pretty or different from the norm. Apple products are aesthetically pleasing.
2. Price it out of reach for the common man. Owning one signifies that you are a member of an exclusive club, no matter if everyone else at the hipster coffee shop has one.
3. People get locked into the ecosystem. iCloud, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iMac, iPad etc.
4. Limit the number of available models and options which removes purchaser anxiety.
5. The iStore (Apple Store?) is a sales and support center dedicated to help you. Neither dell, hp, sony nor samsung have anything remotely similar.

At work we've had several 2016s come in for different keys doing double/no register, and a couple of the "MacBook" small ones. Apple has replaced the top cover free in every case. My 2016 is doing it with one key now as well, but I've been lazy getting it over to Apple. We have a third-party Apple certified repair place nearby that did a couple of 2016 keyboard repairs with 2017 keyboards, I may see if I can coax them to do the same with mine.

I had one person who writes extensive documentation as part of their job almost throw their 2016 MBP at me cuz the keyboard was so awful for them. We ended up giving them a 2015 model and they are much happier (tho they admit an old 2011/2012 would be even better lol).

It's kinda sad cuz for me personally, when the keyboard is working, I type very fast and comfortably on it, though they are a little loud. It's not unpleasant, just not always appropriate for like meetings and such.

Can;t you plug in a keyboard, I mean before they throw the whole darn thing at you?

I've been told, and don't quote me on this, that external keyboards don't work well in certain places one may work on a laptop, such as on airplanes. Macs have traditionally had good keyboards and it's kind of a shame they can't even get that right anymore.

Hell, I stopped playing tech for family because they couldn't keep out of trouble long enough to keep their windows installs working, so. I started telling them to buy Macs. Those that did (my younger son & family for one) have zero trouble with their Mac desktop; and a friend that asked my advice in 2009-10 got a MacBook whatever, that's still running strong today.

Dude, I worked in copiers (including for Kodak) a lifetime ago, I KNOW how marketing works, and how fucking crooked they are. They know DIDDLEY and SHIT about technology and engineering, and will do ANYTHING to maintain their own budgets.

Come to think of it, that's EXACTLY what management does! They don't know shit about the reality, and will do ANYTHING and cut ANYONES' throats in order to maintain their own jobs. Pretty soon, the company is full of "managers" who blame the workers for the problems (workers who basically are gone because management fired/laid them off), while the company crashes.

I've come to believe that Douglass Adams was right: we need to ship off any and all management/marketing/accounting/political types to another planet, because they're destroying this one.

We have 2 of these laptops at work (rest are all the older ones) and both have the keyboard issue happen. Pretty sad because we have not had to think about keyboards breaking in a long time.

Ok. Seriously. Take whatever flavor of phone or computer you worship. I don’t care. Whatever. Ask the CEO if they (he or she or he/she) wish that their company had the success of Apple.

Please tell me the one that says “no.”

Then tell me what your cognitive dissonance means.

I’ll wait.

Indeed, I agree. Financial success doesn't equate to quality. I'm considered a Microsoft fan boy by many around here. Who wouldn't want a product like desktop Windows? But hell, even many supposed Microsoft fan boys wouldn't see Windows as a quality product. Until they tried to do certain things that nothing else even tried to do.
