In a bit of news that slipped past us, DICE has announced that it will be ending monthly support for Battlefield 1 starting in June. In a news post last Wednesday DICE talked about the final expansion, Apocalypse, as well as making more maps available for everyone, and a new game mode called Shock Operations coming in June. However buried at the very bottom DICE had this to say:

We’re continuing monthly updates for Battlefield 1 until June 2018, in which you can expect fresh content together with various tweaks and fixes for the player experience. As you may have seen on the Updates Page, these updates can cover anything: matchmaking, weapon balancing, even Dreadnought horns that sometimes won’t stop blaring.

So shy of 2 years after release, they are dropping monthly support. Likely because they are going to shift focus onto whatever Battlefield 2018 will be. I can personally say I'm disappointed in the battlefield series overall. Though 1942, Vietnam, BF2, 2142 it was honestly my favorite game, but ever since the expansion packs for Battlefield 3, the spark seems to be fading on what made the series so great.

Game has been dead on the PC for a while, I'm surprise they continued support, but I guess it must have more life on the consoles. And I agree, once they started making the game more like Call of Duty, it's pretty much s tunk. A very pretty game, but too far past its former glory.

My group of gaming friends, not that I have many, 8 or 10 - maybe 12 guys in total never ever bought BF1. And we are all massive massive fans of BF2, BF3 and BF4 and all the expansions.

The reason was they scaled the maps down making them smaller thus forcing a button mashing run and gun behavior/mentality. We were just not interested at all. Zero ... zilch. Have you ever watched live play? It's totally and completely different than the past Battlefield games. This kids are just running around killing each other in the small little areas they provide you with now. Actually very sickening to watch. Sad as well.

Go watch Battlefield 4 videos. Completely and totally different game style.

While they picked up a lot of casual players, they lost a lot of players.

Anyways, praying and hoping to god the new Battlefield is something we will all want to play this time around. There's a very good possibility that with micotransactions, smaller maps, more of a focus on casual button mashing run and gun kids, the series might be dead for once and all now which is what all of us are honestly counting on.

Maybe don't just try and copy CoD? Just a thought.

And I'm speaking as someone who was semi-pro in BF2 for three years. Can't stand CoD, can't stand new BF's.

It's just a money grab. They want to design these games to get the largest possible amount of money. Not sure of the exact wording but even if you put lipstick on a pig to dress it up it's still a pig at the end of the day. This is why Battlefield has become a button masher run and gun game. They want to feed the casual player who wants to game for 30 mins to an hour. The want high turn-over. Back when we absolutely loved and played BF4 ... those games would last a fair amount of time. They don't want that anymore. They want you in and out quickly to get new people in who might spend more money.

I'm in the tard demographic that thought Bad Company 2 was the bees knees. Really nice melding of the arcade feeling of COD with the grandeur of BF. CODs maps are way too small and its very spawn shoot die repeat without any strategy. BF can sometimes feel so big that its a chore to play unless you have a well rounded squad. Bad Company 2 was a nice mix of the two. That said I liked BF3 after all the patches. BF4 I enjoyed quite a bit. I...gotta admit I've maybe played a total of an hour of BF1. I don't know it felt weirdly unfair out of the gates. The starter guns and classes seem like such a mess it felt like an extreme struggle to progress. I also felt like I was dying randomly to sniper fire so much that I gave up on it. Thats on me. I have 2 or 3 friends who play BF1 constantly and love it. I need to give it another shot before the community dies. I also was a CS player during the BF2/2142 days. I wish I'd gotten a chance to play more 2142.

*changes mind and loads up BF4.*

Friend bought it for me, and while i did enjoy, as said, the maps are too dam cramped you can not actually play with much skill....

Honestly the only thing that kept me coming back to Battlefield 1942 was the Desert Combat mod. After that I bought Vietnam, but never played it. I did play 2142 a little but nowhere near as much as that Desert Combat mod. Man that was fun that just never ended.

For me personally bfbc2 was the last enjoyable game out of the series. Loved all of them until cod clone bf3 was released.. there's zero teamwork now, it's just people running around like headless chickens.

Played them all since BF2142. BF1, however, has been a disappointment. Mostly run and gun, with aircraft way overpowered. I've also had massive problems getting the game to run after updates, requiring that I download the game (all 65GB) several times over. EA has been absolutely no help with support. I went back to BF4 and found it surprisingly familiar and comfortable and much easier to play. I will probably buy in to the next series... maybe.

I feel kinda sad about this, but glad as well since it means more people on BF2018.

BF1 was and still is an absolute BLAST for me. I last played serious online multiplayer back on dial-up and Soldier of Fortune were still things. Although, being a *sigh* adult with responsibilities I don't think I fall into the hardcore gamer bracket anymore.

I skipped all of the CoDs and BFs until I won a key for BF1 in a competition. I almost kinda want to go play the old BFs now. : -)

And this is exactly why I won't buy 'that next shooter'. Because it's just one fad chasing another.

Truly, the pinnacle of the "games as a service" model: neither game nor service.

i couldnt agree more with this entire post. i played the earlier Battlefields and even Modern Warfares (they WERE cool at one point, you have to admit) with actual soldiers prior to 2010 in Kuwait and Iraq. group grew to ~14 of us over the years after returning home.

how many of us bought BF1? just me. and I was shocked at how congested feeling the game was. And I'd mastered planes and could go 200-0 in a round. Basically broken compared to BF:BC, BF3, BF4 which I loved. I think you're right in that they picked up a lot of new players, but its new players that will float from release to release and not hang around long. Point in case: the game is already dying/dead. I'd wager in another 9 months you could find more BF3/4 players than BF1.

Looks like the next version of insurgency will be COD-ified as well . I think the next great game will have ai built into it that will allow procedural terrain generation. People who play hundreds of hours focus on finding glitch locations. I find that most games have good online play for only a couple of weeks. Then cheats glitches and camping take over.

With on-the-fly map generation, you force players to use strategy and cooperation to fight the unknown

Its "dying/dead" based on what? www.bf1stats.com says otherwise. Game's usually got 50-75k players online depending on ToD.

I wasnt a fan of BF1's MP, and really miss BF3 and BF4, but it's silly to say "the game's dead bro" just because you dont personally like a game.

alot of people on this forums love to say/believe that its dead because its not what they wanted out of the game, I love BF1 and still play it alot on my PS4. It struck the perfect balance between old battlefield and COD feels for me that made it perfect and obviously im not the only one as the servers are still doing great. NEVER have an issue finding games still and have lots of fun every time I jump in, but then again I enjoy the game for what it is and stop trying to shoe horn it into its predecessors old molds. Seriously if BF3/4 is the end all best game to people go play that but it doesn't change the fact BF1 is a good game.

Lol what? Game has been alive and well ever since it was released. As of writing this post to your ridiculous claim, there are 14k players on PC right now. There is even more on Ps4 and XB1. On a typical "down time" it'll drop down to 6k players.

I've played bf2, bf3, bfbc1 and 2, BF4, and BF1. BF1 isn't a bad game..

Game is definitely not dead. PS4 and Xb1 still has close to 20k players playing daily. PC it ranges from 6k to 16k per day. There is a delusion from these "older" gamers that this game is dead because it isn't close to their precious bf 1942 or bf2.

The most fun I've had is CO-OP vs Campaign, Environment or bots on private servers. Playing against jerks or hardcore godlike players ruins games for me, so meh. Not concerned about BF since 1942.

Even BF3 was a disappointment. I pre-ordered it, hoping it would be more like BF2, played it a bit and then gave up on it. Never bought any of the expansions.

Remaster BF 1942 and Desert Combat.

That is all.

Every iteration of BF 1942 since its inception has just been lipstick on a pig.

I really enjoyed Battlefield 4, and think it's the next closest thing to Battlefield 2 (which I think is the best Bf) - if you find a server with the right settings. Battlefield 1 was very experience-reduced, IMO, with no main player bases, and vehicles magically appearing on the battlefield if someone chooses one from the spawn screen.

I still play Battlefield 2 on Bf2 Hub.

I wish Revive hadn't shut down, though. They didn't have to: EA sent them a request that they remove their downloads of copyrighted EA material, but Revive treated it as though their project was being shut down. All they had to do to satisfy EA was offer their Bf2 Revive launcher as a patch to be applied to the full game (just like Bf2 Hub does), rather than combined in an installer package that included the full game. I think they must have been looking for an opportunity to stop the project anyway, and the EA letter made a convenient narrative. Otherwise, their shutting down doesn't make sense.

Look, if you like the new Battlefield that has been transformed into a reskinned COD then that's all that matters. Right? And, if you haven't noticed you just basically proved everyone's point. 20K console "kiddies" vs 6k PC Gamers "old guys."

I've played them all as well. Even in late BF4 I could fire up the game and always had a number of conquest servers going. Nowadays, I find 2 that are normally full and nothing else. I don't care for Team deathmatch, but I've played more TDM in BF1 than I have in all the others combined.

If you are looking at BF1 tracker, you see the game started out with a peak of around 550,000 players. Todays peak is around 50,000 players and PC side is less than half the two console's peaks. I like BF1, I think it looks really good, plays really good (less of the lag\hitbox issues than we saw in BF4) but it has not held up as well. If you think 6-16K is a good number, then we simple disagree on what a good number is.

I'm sure I am in the minority when I say this, but I couldn't care less about BF1. I've played the battlefield series since 1942 came out (great lan party memories with that one). I've enjoyed every single one since then, but for some reason BF1 just didn't do it for me.

I've played all the Battlefields on PC, hundreds of hours into each of them since BF2. I bought BF1 at launch but didn't have much chance to play it until recently. I have to say now that I've got about 60 hours into it, I think it's a great game, and I'm hooked. While I'm more of a fan of the modern equipment from BF4, I'm loving how BF1 plays. Definitely not feeling like I'm playing a reskinned COD. I'm also not having much trouble finding matches.

I enjoyed bf1 for the most part...but I want bf to get back to the big huge maps like 1942. I like the huge Distances between flags in conquest.

This, and bring mack a main spawn, fuck this spawning into a vehicle shit, I hate it, hanging out in the base and getting prepared was great.

And fucking NAVAL BATTLES, wtsf EA, BF42's naval combat was amazing, hell even if you weren't on Midway sending people down to the points on Wake Island to the shore batteries to sink the allied carrier and shut down their main spawn was the bees tits!

Had fun playing all of the Battlefield games. BF4 being my least favorite.
There are naysayers for everything ya know. Even the Witcher 3 was roasted for downgraded visuals, still a great game to play.

BF 4 was plauged with netcode "tweaks" for several months that really burned me, but was otherwise good. BF 3 was better. BF1 plays exactly like Battlefront, because it is a reskinned Battlefront.
