I am sure this has be done before but. is a single 1060 3gb better than 2 460gtx in sli?

thinking of budget upgrading, but not sure.

My system is old and a little slow at some of the new games and without replacing everything. I was thinking a 3gb or 6gb card.

1070 or better is not in the budget unless I get a used one.

thanks for any input.

like wow holy snikes! improvement or just a bit smoother? mostly playing pubg right now, and maybe will get Farcry 5

Like "holy sh*t", the difference in PUBG between my GTX 960 (which is basically your 560 SLI setup) and a 1060 is night and day....

It's pretty much twice as fast.

Grab a 6GB card. Do not undercut on VRAM!

I second this, especially in todays day and age, and since you mentioned pubg...yeah.....

FTR with system in sig, at 1080p low + 110 screen scale, +100 on core +200 on mem, 100-120fps can be achieved, however I now have a 1440p, and usually just run everything on high, so 70-80 is the norm for me......

You can just follow the trail of GPU tiers going up.

Your 460 SLI setup is about on par or slightly faster than a GTX 580. From there, a GTX 780 is about twice as fast as the 580. Then, a 980 is about 25-30% faster than a 780.
A GTX 1060 6GB is roughly equal to a GTX 980 (bit faster in some games, bit slower in others). You will see a massive performance improvement, all while significantly dropping your power consumption and cooling requirements.

thanks for all the replies, gives me something to chew on, was gonna pull the lever right before xmas and then the mining guys bought everything. and drove prices up. but I think the 1060 6gb of some flavor will be what I get, I have seen some say the 3gb benchmark better for some reason. maybe driver issue I guess.

SLI adds input lag. Even GPU which would be as fast in benchmarks as your SLI setup would be massively better, let alone much faster GPU with lower power consumption

....maybe was just flukes in the benchmark..... or wrongly listed....the 3gb 1060 has fewer cuda cores then the 6gb...

GTX 1060 6gb = 1280 cuda cores
GTX 1060 3gb = 1152 cuda cores...

really for all intents and purposes the 1060 3gb should have been the 1050ti....

460 gtx Is from 2011

I said it was old. When I built this rig I just moved them from my old machine. Was going to buy a 970 then saw the new series was about to release. and So I waited. this rig is probably 5 years old or older at the moment now. but other then a couple games it ran everything well enough for me. Pubg was pretty smooth for awhile then the last couple large updates changed something and its been slow ever since, even reducing everything to low or very low.

Think about it this way:

x2 460s in SLI is slightly faster than a 480 gtx
x2 480s in SLI is slightly faster than a 680 gtx
x2 680s in SLI is slightly faster than a 1060 6gb card

Again the above are quick and rough estimates and assumes EXCELLENT scaling in SLI. So essentially even with perfect SLI scaling you'd be doubling your performance before even considering the increase to 6gb ram, not to mention less power draw, heat etc.

A 1050ti will give you that holy shit this is way faster.. and 1060 6gb.. and you might pass out.. so have some cold water handy.. and by all means dont get a 1080ti.. you might have a heart attack..

I think the rest of the specs of the PC need to be listed here. If someone is coming from a video card that old then it does make me question their other Hardware.

His sig shows a 3570K paired with those 460's.
I would think he would be ok going with a 1050Ti-1060. But being that Pubg and FC5 are his major concerns right now, I hope he has that i5 OC'ed to at least 4.5GHz to help make up for his lack of cores/threads, till he can afford to do a complete system upgrade.

I'm just on my mobile throughout the day so I guess signatures don't show up. And that's still a pretty decent fairly modern i5 and enough for a 1050 Ti in general.

Yep...hard to beat the performance for the dollar that a 1060 provides. I'd avoid the 1050Ti, even though the price tag may be enticing vs the 1060 right now.

Rotate your device to landscape mode and the sigs will show up. :)

yep 1060 or bust....

any other time id easily recommend the 1050ti for budget builds but it just doesn't make sense at the price point its at these days, vs the performance you get... I mean its retailing for what the 1060 SHOULD be retailing for....so...

not to mention hes wanting to play some pubg, so..... he really needs as much as performance / vram as possible......(and yes cpu really helps that game too, but he can eek by so long as the video performance is there)

PUBG is still a bit of a turd. Honestly, for competitive play I run everything low except AA and models on medium, view distance high/ultra. 1440p I framecap using my main PC. On 1080p with my HTPC's 960 I was still 100+FPS. Definitely go 1060 6GB, however you would also see big gains upgrading other things.. if your sig is correct - you could use an SSD.

Yeah, I can't really recommend purchasing a 1050 Ti at this point.

Seeing as how its identical speed-wise to my current GTX 960.

I don't think that level of graphical horsepower is worth more than say, $130 tops.

Definitely 1060 or bust.

I was waiting for a sale on the 1060 cards the prices were going up and down a little and then one of my current cards fried, to where I was having trouble booting at all. so instead of waiting I looked online, Had read that best buy of all places was not charging a arm and leg like some of the others and bought a nvidia founders 1070 for $399 plus tax about $150 more than I wanted to spend but, it is something I use everyday and a lot. So I figured what the hell. found a store 30 minutes away that had it in stock.

card works pretty good. however a problem came up. I installed the new card after removing both gtx460 and now my killer nic e2200 stopped working. I mean the system does not see it. was saying driver not installed properly but it won't let you install it because it says no hardware found. So I was offline a week until I could get a pci-e network card shipped, as nobody anywhere near me carries these at all. so $20 on amazon and I am back in business. I still cannot get the killer working, it was fine until installing the new video card. so weird. its a onboard version of the nic.

Wouldn't a 460 sli be useless now? Sli is shit with modern cards. The new sli profiles proabably don't even want to for 460s. 460 lack of vram also a huge issue with modern games.

just turn down the graphics settings a bit and don't sit with your nose touching the display monitor and you'll be just fine

the 460s were running fine in pubg until one of the 8-12 gig updates. whatever they changed in one of them, started to really stress the cards, and they eventually died of old age as well. lowering the settings worked some of the time, but they started to artifact nonstop and one is causing the pc to crash on boot. so they are both kaput.
