Guy damages rare collectible graphics card :(

Hey guys! Glad some of you found some enjoyment from my misfortune.

The card wasn't actually supposed to run the fan at 100% in 2D mode. Idle temp was in the 40s (yes the GPU has a temp reader, perhaps one of the first) . Hardly at critical levels. Normally the fan runs at 50% on the desktop, and the numerous times I've gotten the card to boot up since, it was running at the correct speed. I briefly lowered the speed to 34%, and the artifacts started immediately after. I think that's more coincidence though.

Yes I've gotten this card to work many times since this video went up. Each time it does the exact same thing: It lasts about 5-7 minutes, then artifacts, then a black screen.

Anyway I probably shouldn't have titled the video the way I did, but I thought in the off chance it actually was my fault, others might get a kick out of it.

May I ask how you procured your card? if you don't want to post it publicly, would you be willing to PM me? just curious about the history

Wtf, I had a MSI N Box FX 5900 256mb ultra bundle.

Sexiest video card I ever had. Huge copper heatsinks on the front and back.

Fucking sold it to some nub in the netherlands, fucker blew it up the same day he got it. **EDIT** oh, I cant forget that he fucking stood on and destroyed the actual N Box.

^ true story, felt sorry for him so I bought a brand new 6600 gt 128mb, and sent it to him cuz he was broke.

Now that I am broke, nobody buys/sends me leet shit.

Back when Video cards were cheaper and makers needed to entice buyers

Fuck you Nvidia 2018

Edit 2.

Video reminds of me a better era, gf 2, gf4, fiddy 9 hundred U, 6800gt, sli 7800 ( which I sold 2 years later for £20, £10 each in a bundle that contained all my sckt 939 stuff. I feel sick now that I look back on that period of my life ) 8800gtx, 290gtx and 680gtx classified 4gb which I still use as I very rarely game now, plus fuck paying £1000 for vid cards.

Its been a roller coaster ride, I say ride because it was me who was getting fuked by retailers when it came to the cost of these things.

Please tell me that 8800gtx’s are selling for big money, I has 1

Yeah the prices suddenly jumped up from $300-500 to...a few times that amount. Amazingly I got a lot of comments trying to claim the card isn't rare.

Took me 2+ years posting on here to finally get one

I would think a Geforce 3 ti 500 would be more of a rarity than that card?

I sold 3x BFG 8800gtx's for a bit over $100 a piece around 2 years ago. The non-BFG models were around $80.

Canadian.

You would be incorrect. The gf3 ti500, while a nice card, didnt have the huge cooler or take 2 slots. This was the first iirc.

The 7800 GTX 512MB is a super rare card too. I have one that's dead. Wish I could find a working one.

Get a hot air tool (NOT a heat gun or an oven) and a boatload of flux and try reflowing the GPU and memory chips. Just make sure you don't bump the card while the solder is melted or you'll have a bad time.

Use aluminum foil to shield any plastic bits and electrolytic caps from damage.

Card honestly probably died in transit vs in his rig. He didnt do anything that would have destroyed a full functional/non damaged GPU.

Is this card rare because people smashed them with sledgehammers from all the noise-induced migraines?

I almost won one of those playing in a UT 2004 tournament.

Came in 2nd, got an Nvidia t-shirt that I still have. Might have actually been the superior prize.

I have a load of old video cards sitting around, I should really check and see if any of them are worth some decent coin!

I just need to go pick my FX 5900 XT up at my Father in laws as He has my old AMD 3800 x 2 with a BFG 7600 GS on an Abit board still running ..

But you do make me want to restore some of what is left of my old pc collection .... MSI 7900NX / LeadTeK WindFast 8800 GTS 320Mb OC model and both still like new as I sold my SLi eVga SLi 7900GTO's and 6800GS and 6800 Ultra / 260GTX

Heck .. check out my PC case from around 14 years ago . . custom airbrushed and use to sport a 775 socket e5200 water cooled and HD 4890 XT water cooled .

I used to run 2 in sli on a Dell 30. Man those were the days.

Man I really need to check the dates on these posts. I saw it at the top and watched that whole snooze fest waiting for something to happen.

Had an FX 5900. Thing was terrible. My previous Geforce 4 Ti 4200 was faster in several titles.

That being said, if you're a collector of GPUs, the FX 5800 is gold. It was Nvidia at its absolute worst and is an extreme rarity.

I would try the oven baking trick on it. (y)

One of the memory chips has a dodgy contact. That's how all those old cards died. The only way to avoid the problem is to not ever use them!
