Best Reviewed A-MVA Monitor Thread: Read the 1st Post

It looks like all the monitors are 1440P and mostly 32"

I really want a 1080P VA monitor for watching streaming content - are there any 24-28" panels that people recommend?

It would sit above my NV Surround monitors on an arm that would let it drop in front of the center monitor when I want to watch TV.

Yes. There is IIYAMA XB2483HSU-B3 and XB2783HSU-B3.
I think igluk have the 27" version.
Btw igluk - how is ppi on 27" version? And have You recently compared iiyama to some modern ips ?

No, I have the 24'' B1 version. I tested bigger screens before and I don't like sub 90ppi. You had a 1080p IPS just a short while ago, no? They are all pretty much the same! The only significant difference in image quality is due to coating on the GLOSSY models.

For video the best 27'' should be the BenQ EW277HDR, but I think it has no mounting options. Best 28'' for video is the iiyama X2888HS-B2.
At 24'', I'm not sure. Can't really recommend the XB2483HSU-B3 unless you have a calibration device because the gamma on the hardware.info sample is so messed up. (pics on previous page)
iiyama models are not available in North America.
There are MSI and Samsung displays using the 144Hz curved Samsung panel, I posted a couple reviews in the monthly lists.

Yeah yeah I did had Dell U2417H for few hours few months ago. I unpacked it, noticed very nice popping colors. Then I noticed terrible build quality and it's the reason why I've returned it the same day.
At the time I also thought that it was crushing blacks/dark content but I think it fact it was showing it correctly since my xb2483hsu gamma was lower than ideal and I was used to that.
When I got ag251fg after that, It also had about 1.9 gamma and looked way closer to xb2483hsu than dell.
And there is only so much calibrator can do even if I had one :p And if anything - that dell should be taken as a source since it's a factory calibrated monitor from their best line of ultrasharp monitors *derp and irony*.

And all those other va monitors are always curved and I don't want that

Thanks, but these don't seem to be readily available in the US.

I agree a glossy monitor would be preferable but it's hard to find that feature these days - my main 3 screens are fast TN G-sync monitors that are terrible at video (severe banding in low light scenes) - I don't need 144hz or anything like that and I'm wondering if a television would be the way to go. This is a tertiary monitor - the main purpose is to make HDMI audio easier and the second purpose is watching stuff.

I tried finding a Human Centric VESA plate adaptor for that BenQ but they don't seem to make one - at least not yet anyway.

Too bad, I can get an employee discount on Dell monitors.

Has anyone tried any of the Viewsonic screens? They seem to have a lot of VA panels at good prices. I'm not running a theater here, I just need something that doesn't look inherently broken when I watch The Walking Dead

This 28" looks like it could work, but I'd be happy even with a 22-24"

No user here tested the B3 overdrive yet. But it has a new OSD with 3 Overdrive settings (Off,+1,+2). There is relatively little overshoot on the max +2 setting though, so it might be too weak.
It can get brighter than the B2 (~296cd/m²), out of box calibration is similar to the B2 (so rather shitty, especially gamma). Contrast same or marginally higher (3000-3200:1) Also it should support 75Hz out of the box. You're welcome to try and report your experience ;)

Hey, don't wait for my B3 review since I didn't got it after all.
I've took a gamble and got a monitor that have almost no opinions yet - LG 24GM79G. Just a 144hz Tn.
Surprisingly, it is pretty fantastic and looks very uniform with no clouding and blb at all on hole black screen. Contrast is great on 60hz and starts washing up the higher hz is set. It's bad at 144 but okish at 120hz.
I still think that even TN is better than ips from my experience. And the gamma on my LG unit is 2.2 on 60hz and about 2.0 on 120hz. Really neat display with a lot of settings.

As for AMVA - I hope somone tests B3 to confirm if gamma is really low. I had B2 for almost 2 years and it was a neat display but the gamma was in fact low. I tihnk it was way better on Benq Gw2470h but that display had way too bad smearing to keep it.

edit: I still do feel like an idiot for buying 144hz tn and using it only in 60hz mode because it looks like crap above that... but at least it's nice, uniform, contrasty...

Congrats on getting a TN with good black uniformity. They do exist ;)

Gamma on the GW2470H is pretty high on default - around 2.4-2.5 I believe. Gives a deeper look but probably crushes some of the darker shades. It should have an option to lower gamma in the OSD though.

The 23.6'' ViewSonics use a VA panel that has very slow response times, strong smearing of blacks. But I guess if you only watch TV shows and stuff it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

There are two 28'' VA panels (both from InnoLux) - one with standard gamut and one with wider gamut. It depends on what you personally prefer and if you don't mind oversaturated colors.
The ViewSonic VA2855SMH uses the standard gamut panel, I also see the BenQ GC2870H listed on amazon it has the wide gamut one (same panel as the iiyama X2888HS-B1)
The BenQ it was tested when it came out and had broken overdrive but since it's still available I assume they fixed it in the meantime.

Concerning glossy, the HP Pavilion 27c and Elitedisplay s270c are also still available. Both use a glossy low-haze coating by HP. They do not have VESA functionality though, and need specialized mounts.

Btw. It would be best to have a monitor that supports 72Hz for streaming TV shows (since they run at 24fps). But almost no review sites test for overclockabilty so I don't know if any of the displays have that capability.

Thanks for the info - I'll see if I can poke around for an aftermarket vesa converter for the glossy screens.

The suitability for video is completely overlooked when it comes to monitors. I might just buy a TV, but most of them look clunky and they seem generally underengineered and low resolution compared to monitors....

Edit: It looks like the HP screens have side speakers - that along with the ridiculous stands that HP insists on is enough to rule them out (besides working for their competitor).

I ended up getting the BenQ 2760HL https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XT58FMC/

I don't know how it ranks among similar monitors, but I've never used a VA panel before and I'm very pleased with it.

I have it mounted over my 3x Dell S2417DG monitors on an adjustable arm - I can swing my center screen to the side and drop the 27" down to perfect eye level if I want to watch a movie.

The PC looks great and I have my old Firestick running into my AVR and it looks great as well.

Nice color, nice blacks and I have not even adjusted anything.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Anyone have any additional information or experience on the HP 27x ?

27 inch 1080p 144hz Curved 1800R VA 5ms response -
https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-27x-curved-display

It's available here for around the equivalent of $220 USD.
No idea. I just recently discovered that HP is actually making great monitors... And that 1080p at 27" is great and not pixelated at all(at least on glossy screen). All those years I've been stuck to 1080p 24". 27" is so gooood.
Anyway - I got HP 27ea this week. It's about 1200:1 ips with glossy screen. It has NOTHING to do with display You are asking about lol. I just can report on HP. Their OSD is good and they allow to set anything You want (even disable power LED). The calibration on 27ea is great out of the box with correct gamma, white point and everything. So that already says that HP is doing better job than let's say iiyama.
I would be really interested to test out HP's va monitor. If they calibrate them as correct as their ips monitors, then it could be a great monitor. Also - They have 3 overdrive modes and they all work. on 27ea mode 2 eliminates ghosting and mode 3 introduced overshoot.
But va overdrive is a different beast and iiyama does it the best at least compared to poor benq.

Now if only 27x was flat and glossy.

Be sure to use tons of Anti-Aliasing in games :cat:

Glossy finish if anything make everything sharper and 27" 1080p I would probably go dangerously close to "analyzing IPS sub-pixel structure" territory :hungover:

Hate to beat a dead horse if this has been answered before...

So i want a MVA. From my sig you can see ive has that glorious office max find and removed the anti glare coating.

However thanks to mining, i have to keep my gtx 1070. So the question is, if i get one of these monitors with freesync, do they behave like normal 144hz monitors when hooked up to nvidia hardware? AKA i could set my win10 to 72hs or 120hz (3x or 5x 24fps video) and it would work? I just dont want to get stuck with a monitor that only works in 60hz mode if i dont have a freesync gpu.

I do not see any pixels/subpixels except when I get 5cm close to the screen. It looks really good and I am surprised.
I have to use anti aliasing just as much as I had on 24".... the only case when no AA is needed is with 4k dsr(as it was on 24").
So that means that 4k 27" screen would also not need additional aa mostly. My next screen is going to be 4k for sure but not with gtx 1060 and not untill they will adopt scaling. 4k dsr makes some stuff so small

I think some people do not understand difference of ppi and anti aliasing. Maybe 150+ ppi aliasing is less visible (because pixels step is so small)

At distance of my arms to monitor (normal distance I use monitors at) I can read 7pt text so for me 27" monitor is way too big for 1080p
It is however certainly not overdoing it if you cannot see subpixels at this size. In this case 1440p or 1080" at smaller size is wrong format.

"4K DSR" is basically different (easier and more compatible) way to implement 4x SSAA and what I consider "tons of Anti Aliasing" :ROFLMAO:

In games AA is still needed because aliasing is still visible and produce shimmering effects but in this case something like FXAA is enough. It slightly blurring image is not an issue at this resolution and size. With ~100ppi monitor FXAA alone have visible flaws.

BTW. when you use DSR you should also use FXAA or other form of post-processing based AA because these stack up very nicely. You basically scale down image that already have most of aliasing removed. FXAA adds blur but since you scale this down you won't see the blur.

https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-27x-curved-display

It's available here for around the equivalent of $220 USD.

Probably the same panel as http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/acer_predator_z271.htm (which I own) but cheaper because no g-sync. If so, it's a very good VA panel. And I too find myself enjoying 1080p@27" way more than expected. Gotta love the high framerates with a 1080ti and 8700k :)

Are those two Acer's (both VA 144Hz) worth to buy and which one is better ?

1) Acer ED242QRA (black version)
2) Acer ED273A

So, I'm looking for a monitor for my Ps4. I would like to know which is the best for max about 300€. It should be a 27 and VA (or IPS).

I just have here the BenQ EW277HDR which I found to be definitely "better" than the Dell S2719H, the HP 27se and the Samsung 27E390H. Now, is there a better monitor than the BenQ EW277HDR? Do you know the difference with the BenQ EW2775ZH? How is the BenQ GW2780 (IPS)?

Every help would be much, much appreciated. Thanks!

I would steer away from HDR in that price range (in any price range actually, current implementations seem limited to say the least). The lg 27ud58-b would be what I would go for in 27 inch. All the monitors you linked are 1080p though, if that's what you are after I would probably pick the HP or Samsung.

If you knew the reviews of the EW277HDR (see pcmonitors or prad) you would know that the HDR hier is not that bad at all.
The HP and Samsung, as I said, are just bad compared to the BenQ.
I'm looking for a Full-HD Monitor.

How are 4k va/va/sva monitors actually? Is the pixel response ghosting better or worse due to high ppi?

There is some AOC stuff, LG 32UD59 seems interesting and most interesting looking - samsung u32h850.
I've seen the dead review for samsung and while it looks good in the review, he did not gave it recommendation

Thanks for the update igluk.. and honestly? I have no idea why are You doing it anymore... Nobody reads it, monitors are crap or either 32" or huge and this topic is dead.
It is even difficult to bet on one manufacturer. Everyone is making the same mistakes nowadays and You cannot trust Dell or iiyama anymore. Samsung is doing good stuff with VA but their smearing and font problems are a thing and I loathe curved screens.
Benq EW277hdr looks ok but I do not trust Benq with their ama. But they do have better static image quality than Iiyama. Anyway - By throwing it on non adjustable stand, they do not even try.

I agree! Who cares about the 32" inch crap panels anyway. They are really really bad!

Thanks Igluk! (again)
Anyone tested in person Benq EW277HDR ? Seems like really interesting monitor. Maybe finally va monitor to surpass iiyama xb2483hsu ?
I did not had much luck with Benq monitors few years ago, but the pcmonitors and runews reviews on this model positions it as sort of a hidden gem and recommend it.

It's a very basic display (1080p, 75Hz, HDR is usable but no true HDR) but other than that the EW277HDR seems to be totally fine.
It was reviewed by a lot of pages, and they were all pretty much unanimously positive - the biggest flaw seem to be the limited ergonomics. (the pcmonitors review is the best of them)
I'd say it's currently the most recommendable 27'' 1080p. It should beat the iiyama especally in the color department due to the wider gamut backlight.

Nice. It's good to see a va that for once have well set gamma and so on. Unfortunately that seems to much to ask for in 144hz models which are also only curved aside from LG

hmmm... for whatever reason I've ordered Benq EW277HDR. It's getting way too good reviews not to try it out. Should be here tomorrow.
Kinda makes me think of Benq gw2470h and iiyama xb2483hsu-b2 comparison I did few years ago here. This time it will be compared to HP 27ea ips.
I am hoping Benq upgraded their very crappy ama from 2 years ago. Maybe there is still some last small breath of live for simple flat, 60hz va monitors.

You can run the BenQ at 75Hz no problem. Ghosting is slightly increased compared to 60Hz though. It's all in the PCM review.
He wrote the ghosting isn't a big problem. At 60Hz, it's a bit worse than my xb2483hsu-b1. At overclocked refresh rates they're both more similar

Looking forward to your impressions - especially how the coating compares to the almost-glossy HP. Probably somewhat of a downgrade - but it should be about as light as matte coatings come.

Just received BenQ EW277HDR.
First of all - holy mother of pixels. There are so many bright stuck/bad pixels on this panel. wow. My unit is new, produced in may 2018 so not too old. There are more pixels than I've ever seen. 2 really visible on black and like another 15/20 subpixels when I look closer in few groups. jscreeen fixer is not doing anything(tested for 1 hour so far). So does massaging the spot. It is going back after I test it. So far I've only seen bad pixels on TN (not much) and on every va montior I've had. VA seems to be prone to bad pixels. Never seen one on IPS yet though.
Gamma - nice 2.2 and selectable all other settings.
White - is white alright? Do not own colorimeter but I don't see any pink or blur hue.
Rec.709 - gamma curve for it seeeems correct but not sure how usable that would be. I've only seen this setting in resident evil 7.
Contrast - Seems about as expected. Need to wait for the night to fully check it out.
Ama/ghosting - on HIGH, small red trail is left behind isaac in afterbirth game. Premium replaced red trail with white overshoot. High seems good enough and there is NO dimming/shimmering of fine details like my test of floor grating texture in Doom3 which completely destroyed iiyama but not this Benq. In short - ghosting is not an issue here but ips is still better.
Stand - a sturdy, too wide piece of shit which You cannot do anything with. no vesa too. Just as bad as my hp 27ea but wider and with glossy parts.
The monitor reports as 8 and 12 bits full rgb in nvidia control panel. It in fact reads HDR signal from UHD movies or ps4 and it does look pretty good although it is locked at maximum brightness. Needs further testing.

edit:
-More thoughts on HDR with real 4k hdr movies and ps4 games. It completely destroys the dark scenes. It cranks the brightness to the sun levels. It is not comfortable to view. Sure it does look spectacular in bright day scenes but dark scenes in Uncharted 4 or the Last of Us look very very washed out. All in all - it is a nice gimmick which looks stunning on those HDR youtube videos from samsung and LG to present HDR but in practice it's useless because of subpar dark performance.
-Contrast - I do not feel that it's as dark as 3000:1. In fact, it does not look almost any darker than my glossy IPS.
-Not much glow but the image is not as uniform because of gamma shift. The sweet spot is quite narrow and games like Bloodborne with dominant grays and dark browns, do suffer from a lot of washed out gamma around the edges and when moving head around. It's good for VA but not amazing.

-so far, colors and ghosting performance are the top marks of this panel in comparison to other VA monitors I've used. In comparison to HP 27ea glossy ips, the colors do not look much better. In fact, the look a bit more reddish. Blacks do not look much better too. There is more banding on benq.
So I would say that HP 27ea and Benq ew277hdr are very similar except, ips has glow in one usual corner and benq has gamma shift + ton of dead pixels.

I don't think I am going to trust another VA monitor for some time. I always have pixels and dust particles in them. There is just something about assembly or it's just my luck... so I am returning it and probably not getting a replacement. If it had no bad pixels? The only thing going for it is a bit better blacks and no ips glow. All else seems better on ips sadly. Maybe next will be 4k ips then
