Weird issue lately. When my 1080 crashes, the 1080s fan spin to 100%, and all my monitors become unresponsive. This will randomly happen if I browsing the web, or if I'm playing games at 4k. Using Open Hardware monitor, I can watch CPU and GPU temps stay around 35C. My 1080 is the gigabyte watercooled one, and I use a corsair AIO solution on my amd CPU. I know the OS is still alive because If I press the power button, the machine will gracefully shut down. On boot, I get an error that says the driver failed to start with error 46. In device manager, my 1080 shows as an unknown device. If I reinstall the latest gforce driver bundle, the card comes back to life and it'll be fine for a few days before it happens again.

Any tips and tricks I should try? I know any excuse to upgrade is a good excuse, but is my card failing? Should I start an RMA process?

Have you tried reseating the card in the slot? Have you reinstalled the drivers?

Power supply could be to blame. I dealt with a similar issue with a friend and it turned out his power supply was failing. Worth a shot at least.

kdh Have you cleaned the drivers off with DDUR (Display driver uninstaller) in safe mode?

It’s either drivers, power, pcie slot/connection, or the card itself

Try a different slot and power cable/port

Monitor use HDMI or DP? Try disabling the Nvidia HDMI audio. Had issues with that when not using it (but monitor supports it). Caused hard locks and other odd crashes. Disable that and 100% stable.

I did a normal uninstall and reinstall, but I'll do a clean install. I'll try that first. I'll try a different slot next. Im building a new machine and have a new spare power supply and, I will try that if the other 2 tips dont seem to work. thanks!

Has to be something other then drivers. I did a clean uninstall, reinstall and a few hours later it happened again. When it booted it, was using the basic windows vga driver. I was in a rush to copy some files to my phone, and while using the vga driver, the card crashed on me and screens went black.

Next on the list, different slot, then power supply.

Spent a few hours last night messing with it. Moved card to a different slot. Power supply is modular, so re-seated all connections. Played pubg and vermintide 2 for about 5 hours combined last night. No issues and seemed ok last night and this morning. Ill check the status when I get home. If it crashes again, my power supply has enough unused ports for additional gfx cards that I will use. Its a corsair 850i Powersupply if that matters.

Hmm, that Corsair 850i has mixed reviews. Most recent focuses on lifespan of a year or so. Might be time to swap it out. I'm using a Seasonic Prime Titanium 650w to power my main rig a feed my power hungry Zotac AMP! Extreme 1070. Gaming for hours my system doesn't even flinch.

Have you updated your driver to the newest release? People seem to be having problems with it.

So far, so good. Been 48 hours and no issues. Longest its been. I noticed when re-seating the USB cable into the power supply for monitoring, it was very loose. I've had that 850i for about 2 years, would suck to have to replace it already. I am currently on the latest driver set. Been nice to come home, sit down, move the mouse around and get my game on. nothing worse than doing IT work all day at your day job, only to have to do more of it when you get home. thank you for all the suggestions. they have all been very helpful.

If you have issues with the latest driver set, use DDU to uninstall them, then install the stable 391.35. (just in case) ;)

I think I can call this one a day. Aside from the recent windows patches this weekend, box has been 100% solid. Moving slots, and reseating all power connections on my module power supply seemed to help. however based on some suggestions, my 850i PS may get swapped out in put into my secondary machine. Thank you for all the suggestions, they definitely helped resolve my issue.
