Google Getting Ready to Introduce Self-Destructing Email

It looks like Gmail will soon have an option to allow you to put an expiration date on email you send. It's not clear if this will work outside of Gmail, but it's still an interesting little capability. I don't know anyone that's been clamoring for this, though I can see how it might be useful. However, I bet Google will still retain the original for their own uses even if you set it to self-destruct.

You can configure the expiration date so that your email disappears after 1 week, 1 month, multiple years, etc. You can also ask your recipient to confirm their identity with a passcode sent via text message. This sounds like a great way to associate email addresses with phone numbers and improve Google’s ads.
 
They haven't even managed to make their mail recall feature work outside gmail, I doubt they will be able to enforce this feature onto 3'rd parties and if they do most others will probably implement it in some sort of a popup system just like read notifications and send receipts. "Sender X wants this email to expire, do you wish to allow it?"

If they bother, probably the same way most of the vendors do secure mail, which is to intercept it outbound, put it into a web portal and send a link to create an account to access the secured content via the web portal.
 
If privacy is the concern then this is mission impossible...it's google after all. Be nice if all the spam self destructed though. I'm guessing this would be mostly used by businesses sending time limited offers who don't want to be bothered telling people they are too late.
 
Tutanota does it better.

An email link to an encrypted browser session is sent, user decrypts, sender destroys message and nothing sensitive to sit in the user's inbox forever.

This would be great for sales ads from companies! 1300+ ads last month alone for me. If they used auto destruct, I wouldn't have to do it myself either manually or by setting up filters.

Unfortunately, Google will most likely retain a copy for their own uses which might be had by warrant or subpoena;) Besides, I keep hearing how he doesn't like to use email. I guess no one can read his sticky notes and scribbled lists?
