Facial Recognition Strikes Again in China

If you're a wanted man and hang out in a crowd of 70K at a concert you probably think you'll be just fine as long as you keep a good eye out for police. Wrong. In China they are increasing their use of facial recognition and putting up security cameras everywhere. The wanted concert goer felt he was safe in a crowd, but he thought wrong and the cops got their man. This is kind of scary if you think about it in a 1984 sort of way. How long before the government knows every step you take?

Authorities in China are increasingly turning towards technology, raising concerns around privacy in a country that has plenty of surveillance cameras and wants to build a national database of faces.

Already done in every major government movement point (e.g. airports). If it is a public subway..there too. Traffic cams..done. License plates...gotcha! Cell phone data...ding! Right now though it is being used, most likely, for special cases. It is when it becomes a "cost effective service" that things will get real.

But the bigger question is - is it better or safer for us "law abiding" citizens? As no doubt this would be touted as the "benefit" of having CCTV monitoring everywhere. Some will undoubtedly buy into that theory (or propaganda) and this will continue to move forward. I don't know we can stop it anymore.

The problem is there are so many laws now that practically NOBODY is a law abiding citizen anymore. So basically you are law abiding until the government decides you arent for whatever reason they want.

I like this Chinese Big Brother better than the British Big Brother.
This new one is thoroughly impressive, whereas the British version is renowned for its inadequacy.

It's also very scary at the same time, but that's another matter.
 
The part that needs to be detailed is how much discrimination and negative scoring goes in to a "newborn" that is:
a. religious (dao, buddhism, christian, mulsim)
b. a minority (over 100 minority groups)
c. from a specific region (western mulsim region, manchuria, tibet etc)

Most likely there is alot of discrimination to control people since if you have a low score you are now banned from trains and planes. Yikes!

The scarriest part is how much power China has over the USA. The NFL and China most likely pressured the packers to take down this week their post on the Dalai Lama and Aaron Rodgers meeting.

You can put up your tinfoil hat meme, but it's not tinfoil hattery. Multiple think tanks have spent a shit ton of man hours trying to determine this very thing. Basically variants of "can you tell at any given moment if you are abiding by all the laws". The answer is no, you cannot. So is everyone guilty of a crime? Nobody knows. However it is a pretty good bet that even if you are, you are only going to be a target of the government either due to random chance, or someone is looking to get you.

It might be an interesting application for AI to approach the question again. I also suspect that if you somehow automated enforcement, shit would break down really rapidly.

That is why I put it in quote - if you have gone over the speed limit, or change lane and forgot to use your signal, you are no longer a "law abiding" citizen. I see people use that term all the time and frankly, I doubt most of us are that at all.

I figured but it was a good pivot to bring up just how unlikely an individual is to be "law abiding".

There are a lot of stupid laws still on the books of most Western places. For example where I am from every business needs a hitching post for horses.
 
But guys, we'll be the ones who get totalitarian approaches right! After all, if you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear!

there even a social rating system in China where if you make a 'wrong' post, you get points deducted.

and the points tie into whether you get your loan approved or not. (among other things)

don;t get why so many people want to see China equal with the West on the world stage ....

Or use transit, fly, drive, etc... Haven't really been keeping close tabs on it, but I think the last number I heard was around 7 million people banned from transportation so far. I liked Black Mirror, not sure I'd want to live it.

wife is asian who often jokes that asians hate all other asian groups (so imagine a country like china with 100+ minority groups similar to native americans in USA.... who are treated as inferior for not being HAN/Majority Chinese). Racism is a major issue and in most countries with small "white" populations it is primarily "xenophobic" beyond just "Race"... but by culture/ethnic group. It is only in the last few hundred years that people think of in the terms of white/black/asian etc... "racism" as a whole is often xenophobia or cultura/religious/ethnic phobic or in the case of china "that" plus "religious and political discrimination" due to a "one china preferring communism/atheist/han first".

Did you know that it is illegal to be reincarnated as a buddhist in china without the government's permission and/or tax? It is illegal to also practice sunday school or private church services without having a license approved (and tax).
 
As far as I'm concerned, doing business with China is like doing business with the USSR or Nazi Germany. Tech companies helping them are like IBM helping the Nazis round up Jews for the camps.

Until you are named in a lawsuit, or incur a minor infraction. Then watch the lawyers go to work on finding everything bad about you.

I think that all of this could actually prevent that. The way cases have worked for most of history is he said she said, then there is a little evidence. but ultimately convincing a jury requires the jury to trust a person. So this is why people dig up dirt, to show lack of trust. But I think if we get to a point where there is a lot more physical evidence, the dirt will matter so much less that we won't need to go down that path. Instead the prosecution can be held to a higher bar of physical evidence. Better cameras in more places are part of that physical evidence.
